STEP 1: KNOW WHAT YOURE STARTING WITH.

Sent to you with this guide (or available rom your advisor) is a Budget Calculator (seeAppendix 1 example). With the inormation that you enter, this orm tells you howmuch money you need to earn, and how much time you have to do it. Fill out thisorm ODAY, so you know your financial picture, and can make your plan rom that.

    STEP 2: RESEARCH POSSIBILITIES.

Te majority o this guide is dedicated to sharing creative ways to earn, save and get

money. Read through them and decide what techniques fit best or you. Consider yourASSES:

How much time do you have?

Do you have family or friends to help you, or are you doing this on your own?

What are your networks & connections that you can utilize as resources?

Do you have a community that would support an event or fundraiser?

STEP 3: SET GOALS YOU CAN STICK TO.

Depositing every cent I earn at my job into a savings account: NO REALISIC.Putting away 25% o every paycheck, REASONABLE.

Having a car wash and expecting to raise $5,000 in a day: NOT REALISTIC.

Planning an event with multiple revenue streams like ticket sales, at the door

donations, a silent auction, a raffle, and getting the site, materials and advertising

donated so I have minimal costs to put it on, expecting to raise $1,000-$3,000:

    REASONABLE.

Dont expect one event or revenue stream to make your whole amount or you. ry a

variety o options, and see what works best or you.

    STEP 4: PLAN AHEAD!

Te closer your program date gets, the more stressul raising money becomes. Startearly, and set benchmarks o how much you can get together per month. Use thebudget calculator to track goals and earnings or you, and ask riends or amilymembers to help hold you accountable. Reward yoursel when you achieve yourbenchmarks... it may help to break your goals down into monetary incrementsSophia from Germany bought herself an ice cream every time she made $500!

    Fundraising 101:Tips & Considerations

    KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Utilize your social networking skills to maximize the success of your events. Targetdifferent audiences you dont want to ask the same people over and over. Instead, find ways to reach out in the various communities to which you belong. Consider yourhigh school, university, hometown, work colleagues, amily relatives, then plan yourundraisers accordingly.

BE CONSCIOUS OF COMMUNITY EVENTS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Many fundraisers can be held in conjunction with other events. Piggy-backing oof organizations who are holding fairs, festivals and other fundraisers can increase thescope and success of your own! Ask them to support you in your eorts and perhapsyou can reach an agreement which is mutually beneficial.

    RESEARCH LEGALITIES

Some towns have restrictions as to the types o events and solicitations you can doas an individual. Be aware o these regulations and make sure that your undraiserscomply with all local, state, and ederal laws. Up with People is not liable or anythingrelated to an individuals undraising efforts.

Students in the United States who are raising unds or their student program ee maymeet people who request a receipt or their gif in order to claim the donation as a taxdeduction. Tese gifts are not tax deductible. Te United States Internal RevenueService regulations state that a gif is deductible only i nothing is received in return.A donation cannot be specified or a specific student, because it is technically not adonation, its a Program Fee payment. Regulations may vary in other countries.

KNOW HOW TO TALK ABOUT UP WITH PEOPLE

Te more inormation you can give prospective donors about the Up with Peopleprogram, the more inclined they will be to contribute to your cause. People want the

assurance that their money is being wisely invested. Be prepared with acts aboutthe program and be willing to explain to others why you eel it is important, andwhat you will contribute to make your experience worthwhile. Remember, you arean ambassador or both your community and country, and you will be giving back tocommunities around the world through 200+ hours of volunteer service.

PLEASE NOE: When promoting your activities to raise unds, please take care not todo or say anything that might lead others to believe that you are a fundraiser for Upwith People. Remember, you are raising money or yoursel, not or Up with People.erefore, your promotions should emphasizeyouandyour participationin the Upwith People program.

    Remember...

    Te worst any potential

    donor can say is no.

    Dont be afraid to

    be creative, or to put

    yourself out in the

    community. As with

anything, youll havethose who support you,

    and those who may

    not. Never let the fear

    of being unsuccessful

    keep you from trying

    to raise your program

    investment.

When you return you can provide a greatpresentation telling them all about what you learned.

Approach Local Clubs and Organizations = Send a solicitation letter to your localKnights o Columbus, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, etc. Tey usually are willing

ILL PAY YOU BACKBorrowing from your future funds...

Look into Loans = Many students finance their Up with People program investmentthrough loans. Lending institutions sometimes offer stipendiums or low interest ratesor students participating in such programs. Remember to borrow responsibly, so youarent surprised by the amount o debt afer your tour (search out reasonable interest

rates.)Interest-free or low-interest loans from someone you know = Arrange a loan set-up rom a parent, relative or other supporter who has money theyd be willing to lendyou Tis loan would not need to be paid back until you have returned rom your Upwith People semester. Set up a business-like form, establishing interest rates, paymentamounts, timetables, etc. to be agreed on by both parties.

Matching Funds = Do you have a beneactor that wants to support you, but also wantsto see you working for your Program fee? Set up a matching fund, so for every dollaryou earn, they give you a dollar. I an equal match is too much, consider other ratios:for example, getting an additional 50 cents for every dollar you earn.

JACK OF ALL TRADESWhat am I good at, and how can I earn money doing it?

Make stuff to sell = is is a common technique, with a lot of room for personalizationand creativity. Past students have sold everything from bumper stickers to t-shirts,bookmarks to jewelry. Te key is or your costs to be minimal in ratio to your price (soyou actually make money on your product.) Value your time in the price, or get anassembly line o riends or amily to help with your creations.

Variation: Holiday Products = Diego rom Mexico made Christmas baskets. He set a goal to sell 25, and ended up selling hundreds. Brenda fromMexico made Te Quiero (I love you) pillows for Valentines day, with helpfrom her mom and sister, which she sold in school and door-to-door in her

community.Variation: Walking Vending Machine = Jackie rom CO bought snacks inbulk (like at Costco or Sams Club) and sold them to riends in school. Shedid this for most of her senior year of high school and raised over $10,000.She had a backpack ull o candy/ruit leathers/granola bars with her at alltimes, and everyone in her school knew to buy snacks rom her. She soldeverything for $1. She also coordinated having concessions at her littlebrothers soccer games (because his team didnt play at a field that alreadyhad a concession stand).

Variation: Support your local team = Abby rom Missouri sold beadnecklaces (think Mardi Gras party beads) beore ootball games or the local

college team, as well as proessional NFL games outside the stadium beorethe game. Try giving them away with a recommended donation price, andyou might be surprised at how generous sports fans can be! Tie a small infocard to the necklace about your eorts. Visiting tailgating areas before thegame is especially effective.

Get a Better Job = Mayke rom the Netherlands cut back her hours at the coffee shopwhere she worked, in order to take a second job that made more per hour. She tooka position at a local candy actory, and made her money or Up with People makingSnickers bars.

Errand boy/girl = Offer to serve as someones personal assistant or the day (or a ewhours) in exchange or a large donation.

    SPONSOR A DAY

    $17,450.00 divided by 154 days = $113.31

Tis campaign is very effective to close the remaining gap o what you have lef to undraise. Consider subtractingwhat youve already earned rom the total program ee and dividing that by 154 days, in order to make the price per dayaffordable or a wider range o donors.

just ten years old, I remember thinking to myself: Id love to do this someday!

I was drawn to the antastic music, the many cultures represented, the un o it all and o course, the

adventure of travel. But not yet having nished grade school, this was a far-o dream.

    Sixteen Years Later

Afer finishing my education in the field o music, Ive wondered just how this gif and skill might be used. Id almost orgotten about Upwith People, but a number o months ago they came to mind. Afer looking into it, giving much consideration and ultimately applying, Iam thrilled that I have been accepted to join them on tour from July to December 2013!

ake a moment and imagine lie on the road or 155 days: well be living with host amilies, experiencing other cultures, servingcommunities, making riends rom all around the world, and sharing the love o music with others. Tis new adventure begins July2013 - as we all gather in Denver, CO, for an intense month of building an eective international team and learning the music, danceand leadership aspects o the show.
