CURRICULUM VITAE
Esther Wiegerinck was born on Sunday, the 16th of March 1986, in Princeton, USA. Before
preschool she returned with her brother and parents to the Netherlands, to settle in Al-
mere. After graduating from high school at Goois Lyceum in Bussum, in 2004, she went to
study Medicine at the University of Amsterdam.
During her medicine studies, she completed the faculty’s honours program and partici-
pated in several research projects in cardiology, orthopedics and anatomy and developed
an interest in cardiothoracic surgery. She went abroad for a scientific research elective in
cardiothoracic surgery under supervision of Dr. L.H. Cohn and worked for 6 months at
Harvard Medical School at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, with specific
interest in minimally invasive valve surgery. At the end of medical school, Esther returned
to the Brigham and Women’s for her final clinical internship, which further enthused her
to pursue a career in cardiothoracic surgery.
After completing medical school late 2011, she entered her PhD programm at the Heart
center of the University of Amsterdam, under the daily supervision of copromotor dr. J.
Baan and supervision of promotores prof. dr. J.J. Piek and prof. mr. dr. B.A.J.M. de Mol.
In 2015 she started working as a resident –not in training- at the department of Cardio-
thoracic Surgery at the Academic Medical Center, and later at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe
Gasthuis, in the citycenter of Amsterdam. During her clinical residency she finalized her
PhD research, which resulted in this thesis:
“Replacing the Valve, Restoring the Flow; effects of transcatheter aortic valve implanta-
tion”
