This quest for scientific excellence at an institution that stands and strives for quality research has been an absolutely pleasurable one. I have had the opportunity to interact, work and be mentored by several endodontic researchers. I am deeply indebted to Prof. Dr. Paul Wesselink and Dr. Hagay Shemesh for their inputs, critiques and vision in developing this thesis and for embracing me into their team. Paul, your contribution to endodontology and down to earth attitude is something all of us can learn from!
Three people have been of great importance to me in my professional career and moulded me into what I am today, as a person, teacher, researcher and a student! - Prof. Jim Gutmann (Professor Emeritus, Baylor College of Dentistry), Prof. C.V.Subbarao and Prof. Kavitha Sanjeev from back home. They have taught me to stand up to what is right and demonstrate utmost sincerity in all my efforts.
Prof. Matthias Zehnder (University of Zurich), Prof. Gustavo De-Deus (Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil) and Prof. Anil Kishen (University of Toronto)… what can I say?! You guys have been great friends and guides, challenging me to develop new ideas, strongly critiquing my opinions to help develop my concepts and strategies in our work together.
Prof. Josette Camilleri (University of Malta) and Dr. Carolyn Primus (Avalon Biomed Inc., USA) for their opinions and friendship. Josette, thank you for teaching me the importance of fundamental understanding of materials science.
I am deeply and sincerely indebted to the members of my committee Prof. Dr. A.J Feilzer, Prof. Dr.
E.C.I. Veerman, Prof. Dr. C. van Loveren, Prof. Dr. Sema Belli and dr. A.R. Özok for your time and interest in this work.
My research and clinical team in India - Vinay Sivaswamy, Priyanka Sriraman, Jahir Hussain,
Subash Sharma, Rohini Mohanraj and Cheng Qing Cheng for taking up my tantrums in a stride and understanding how important this project was to me.
My parents Uma and Neelakantan, and my sister Deepa for showering unconditional love and teaching me that excellence is but an essence of life and to not compromise when it comes to quality. Thank you Amma and Appa. I am blessed to be your son.
Nithya, the love of my life, my wife, for bearing with my times with my Mac at the wee hours of the day and night; for encouraging me to do more; for being absolutely supportive of all my endeavours. Thank you!
