UV-C STERILIZATION AND AIR PURIFICATION PRODUCTS

USING UV-C PRODUCTS FOR A SAFER TODAYThere are three different types of UV rays, and there’s a common misconception that they all do the same thing. While they are similar, each type of ray has a different wavelength and can penetrate surfaces to a certain extent.

The most common form of UV radiation is sunlight, which produces three main types of UV rays:

UV-A UV-B UV-CTHE ABCS OF UV RAYS• UV-A has the longest wavelength of 320-400 nm and is responsible for 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface. These rays penetrate deep into the skin and are a factor in premature aging.• UV-B is likely the UV ray you are most familiar with, as it is what will give you sunburns and possibly skin cancer. This ray has a wavelength of 280-320 nm. • UV-C light has a short wavelength of 100-280 nm and is an ultraviolet light that breaks apart derm DNA, leav-ing it unable to function or reproduce. In other words, UV-C light is germicidal (UV-A and UV-B light are not). UV-C can even neutralize viruses, bacteria and germs that have developed a resistance to antibiotics. HOW CAN ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT KILL GERMS? It was discovered in the late 1800s that UVC light can actually be used as a UV light sanitizer with the ability to kill up to 99.9% of germs. The technology was put to use in the early 1900s in Europe for water purification and is still used today. Without getting too technical, a UVC light sanitizer acts by penetrating the thin wall of a small microscopic organism and destroying its nucleic acids. This disrupts the DNA structure and either kills it or renders it unable to reproduce - and therefore harmless. As a result, the use of UVC light to sanitize and kill germs has many applications.

PROPER USE AND SAFETY INFORMATIONAs UV-C provides radiation, it is not safe to be in the room while UV-C disinfection is taking place. UV-C is classified as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” by the National Toxicology Program. It presents a hazard to skin and eyes, so direct exposure to UV-C is always to be avoided. UV-C is blocked by a number of materials, including glass (but not quartz glass) and most clear plastics, so it is possible to safely observe a UV-C system if you are looking through a window. UV-C provides residue free disinfection, so there is no concern over dangerous residues that need to be wiped down or neutralized after the disinfection occurs. The process is environmentally friendly in that there are no dangerous or toxic chemicals that require specialized storage or handling. Since no chemicals are added to the air/water, there are no process byproducts to be concerned with. The UV bulbs do not require special handling or disposal either, making the system a green alternative to chemical disinfectants. Below are some general guidelines for safe operation of UV sanitation lights:

• Never look directly at the light when it is activated• Use protective eye and face gear• Cover the hands, arms, neck, legs and other exposed body parts• Setup signs, markers or cones around the area to warn others of ongoing sanitation• Do not handle a broken or cracked UV lamp with bare hands

Additionally, we recommend using respiratory masks when performing UV sanitation in potentially contaminated areas. These vital safety accessories have two benefits: prevents individuals from breathing in deadly viruses/toxic chemicals and reduces direct contact when touching the face/mouth.
