in West London was to be home to a professional

couple with three children, so when they refurbished

they added two bedrooms and extended the

ground oor to make a large kitchen diner.

Architect Pravin Muthiah of Coupdeville Architectsand interior designer Mirva Yoshinari transformed aburnt-out shell into an unconventional family home.What did you have to work with?Pravin:The house was in a sorry state. After afire it had been gutted and abandoned, with most

of the rear windows missing and the brickworkstill charred. Its only residents were a couple ofpigeons nesting in the open roof timbers. Theaim of the project was to give the property a newlease of life, taking the old layout of the buildingand reimagining it with a more modern feel.

What was the ethos behind the kitchen design?Mirva:It doesnt follow the rules of a typicalkitchen I hate tiled floors, splashbacks, wall unitsand matching this-and-that; its just so boring. Thebrief was that the kitchen should be ergonomic,

comfortable, usable, industrial and visual, withgood entertaining space and points of reclaimedinterest. I didnt want to be too precious abouteverything being perfect, but to have a look thatgets better with age. I love this style; its easy tolive in and works with this type of house.

What is the story behind the storage?Mirva:I mixed Magnet kitchen units with on-site poured concrete, used reclaimed apple andcheese boxes for storage and old brackets forshelving above the counter. Open shelving allowseasier access to everything and looks good too.

What is your favourite part of the design?Pravin: The flank wall in the dining area is myfavourite piece. It emphasises the rawness of thematerials used throughout the room, with theexposed steel and the recovered brickwork from thedemolition of the rear of the house. It brings anelement of the external building that was lost backinside the property, creating a link to its past.Mirva:I love the reclaimed pieces which give itcharacter and retain the cool energy of the past.

island, with its industrial-style pot wash tap

Master ensuite

The ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom takes

its inspiration from the idea of the Victorian orangery,

with lots of lush potted plants lling the space andbringing a light, airy and natural feel to the room.

The white freestanding bath is the Cleo from Kohler,

a traditional white Victorian roll-top bath in cast iron

with claw feet, which contrasts sharply with the

bespoke modern glass screen. The curvaceous white

console basin, which stands on shapely white legs,

is the La Chapelle from Lefroy Brooks. In this room

too there are reclaimed features, including vintage

mirrors and radiators, while the narrow hand-made

tiles bring a touch of industrial chic to the design.

wooden oor, bath surround and wall panelling made

Building most things in straight lines isrelatively easy, but curves?

Remember geometry class at school? Squares, pentagonsand even decagons were relatively easy but when it came togetting out the compass and dividers pretty much anythingafter a circle was pretty tricky -- an ellipse requires a certainskill and serpentines with increasing radii, well its just too

early for that sort of thing turn it into a three dimensionalobject such as a kitchen cabinet and the fun starts.

Ask any craftsman for curves and immediately mostsuck their teeth and instantly double the price for the jobLong considered pricey and very top-end, now companies

What was the brief?Andrew:Janet and Phil wanted a modern and stylishkitchen that would fit in their open-plan living space.It needed to blend with the living and dining roomand be almost inconspicuous as a kitchen. Janet likesto entertain, so we set about creating a kitchen whichwould be glamorous but in an understated fashion.Janet:I wanted something that looked really modernand was good quality. A local architect suggested Itake a look at Dream Design, and as I walked into theshowroom this kitchen was on display and we said

straight away that we liked it. Im very spontaneouswhen it comes to choosing things for the house.

Why did you choose this look?Andrew:We wanted to create an elegant andcosmopolitan kitchen that would fit seamlesslyinto the open-plan space. The SieMatic S2handleless kitchen is perfect for this as it ishas such a modern but elegant look.Janet:We overlook the sea so its a very sunnyroom; we wanted the kitchen to be bright and airy,and it looks particularly sleek as it has no handles.

What do you like best?Janet:I love the hot water tap so much that Ivejust had one fitted at home, and theres so muchstorage in the kitchen that everything can be tidiedaway and wont gather dust when we arent there.

Has it changed the way the space is used?Janet:The original kitchen was grubby-lookingpine and had a range cooker they are likeMarmite, you either love them or hate them. Ijust couldnt get on with it so I do a lot morecooking now as I enjoy the whole set-up.

When Fabian visited Copenhagen he looked throughthe window of the Vipp store and saw his perfectkitchen, designed by Morten Bo Jensen. Shortlyafterwards he found the perfect spot for it, whenhe and wife Dorothee bought the two split level

ground/first floor apartments of a 1967 blockof flats to transform into a family home.

Why did you choose a Vipp kitchen?Fabian: The Vipp store was closed, but I took apicture of the matt black kitchen through the windowto show to Dorothee. We were on the search foran apartment and I knew this would be the rightkitchen. Some months later we were in Copenhagentogether and took a closer look the rest is history.

Did you worry about the colour?Fabian:

The whole colour scheme of the apartmentis based on black and white, with some wood andgold accents to add warmth, so a black kitchen wasthe perfect addition to the whole concept. Therewas a short moment of is that too much black?when the kitchen was being put together on site,but I couldnt imagine anything else now. We aremore than satisfied with our black beauty.

What was the brief?Morten Bo:There was no brief the stainlesssteel Vipp kitchen is based on fixed modules WallModule, Tall Module and Kitchen Island that canbe put together to suit the individual customer. It hasbeen well thought out down to the smallest detail;from the knobs on the cooker to the pull-out sprayon the tap, the kitchen expresses a complete concept.

Solid and appearing hewn from one large block of stone,wood or concrete, monolithic kitchen islands demand

attention. Freestanding in the middle of the kitchen, letsface it, theyre hard to ignore. Practical for families and

those who like to entertain, they are also seriously stylish.Capacious, they offer tons of storage and often have drawers

deep enough for the largest of pots and pans -- which isjust as well -- as they look best in a clutter-free space.

Ideally an island should be made in proportion to thespace it will inhabit, as you need room to move around itcomfortably. The material you select needs to be carefully

thought through too. Should it be made of a similar materialto the rest of your kitchen so it blends with it, almost

appearing to grow out from it, or should it be a completecontrast and stand alone, like a piece of modern sculpture?

So what makes monoliths so different to ordinary kitchenislands? One of the most striking things is they are devoid

of all decoration and obvious embellishment. All the storageyou need is there, but clever design and detailing makethe doors and drawers almost invisible. Plus they have no

visible plinth, instead they have a cool shadow gap, whichemphasises the bulk and weight of the piece and underlines

iving and working in stressful jobs in Dubai, Mike and Redha likenothing better than relaxing in their Lancashire bolt-hole, even more so now

Katie Collins from Devol has designed them the perfectkitchen in the newly extended ground floor.

Its our escape and the place where we do what we enjoy most cookingand entertaining our family and friends. Redhas Algerian and culturally he cannot

let anyone leave the house without feeding them, says Mike. Practically,it needed to work for two territorial cooks and as the soul of our home it

needed to be sociable and sit in the house as though it belonged.

Mike and Redha did a considerable amount of research before buying. We choseDevol after spending months searching the internet and magazines. It was Redha whofound them and instantly we knew that was the look we were aiming for, says Mike.

We flew back to the UK after New Year in 2013, hired a car and drove straight toDevols showroom in Loughborough. Within two hours, wed agreed our kitchen.

We focused on creating a kitchen that would be bright, clean and simple.We eventually settled on a Shaker kitchen that is beautifully simple and timeless.

The choice of colours and tones enabled us to create something that felt bespoke.Devols beautifully understated furniture is inspired by authentic Shaker carpentry,renowned for its functionality, innovative joinery and craftsmanship, adds Katie.

Its impossible to compare with what we had before, says Mike. Our oldkitchen was small, dark and we couldnt swing our neighbours cat in it.

It was just a place to store the shopping. The new one is the centre of ourhome. As avid cooks, who love to entertain, we are so happy (and lucky) to have

a place where we can spend time, eat and drink with the people we love.

The size and style of each cabinet is vital to achieve

a good balance between a practical kitchen and an

aesthetically pleasing design. If you want to make a room

feel bigger, select fewer but more substantial pieces,

focusing on simple lines and symmetry where possible.
