LAST TIME OUT The Wolverines will open the tournament with a 1-3 record on the young season after going 1-2 at the Pepperdine Asics Classic last weekend and falling in straight sets to Idaho State in Pocatello on Tuesday.

In Tuesday’s midweek contest at ISU, senior Lauren Bakker tallied nine kills and junior Macky Fifita added eight more but it wasn’t enough as UVU fell to the 2014 Big Sky champion Bengals three sets to none (15-25, 18-25, 17-25). Utah Valley had its best chance in the second set as it led by a pair of points early in the frame, but Idaho State used a 5-0 run late in the game to put the set away.

Sophomore Lexi Thompson leads the Wolverines in kills on the season with a 3.00 per set average.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION Milwaukee will enter Friday’s tournament opener with a 2-2 record after falling to Northern Illinois on Aug. 31 and going 2-1 at the Pepsi Panther Invitational with wins over Western Michigan and Furman last weekend. The Panthers were picked to finish second in the Horizon League this season after taking second a year ago with a 10-4 conference clip. Maggie Dunbar paces UWM with a 2.93 kills per set average and a .290 attack percentage.

Friday’s contest will be the first all-time meeting between UVU and UWM.

North Dakota State is 3-1 on the year with wins over North Texas, Winthrop and Saint Louis. The Bison were picked to finish third in the Summit League this year after plac-ing fifth in 2014 with an 8-8 conference record. Jenni Fassbender leads NDSU in kills this season with a 3.39 per set average.

Saturday’s match against NDSU will be the eighth all-time meeting against North Dakota State. UVU will enter the contest with a 5-2 series advantage and having won five of the last six meetings.

Towson will enter the weekend with a 4-1 clip after picking up wins over Manhattan, St. Francis, Delaware State and Coppin State at the Towson Invite last week. The Tigers were picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in 2015 after taking second last year with a 13-3 CAA record. Jocelyn Kuilan is tops on the team in kills this season with a 3.35 kills per set average.

Saturday’s tournament finale against the Tigers will mark the first all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Towson.

UP NEXT FOR UVU Following Tuesday’s midweek contest at ISU, the Wolverines will return to pre-season tournament play at the NDSU Baymont Inn & Suites Classic in Fargo, North Dakota this weekend. While in Fargo, UVU will face Milwaukee on Friday (Sept. 4), and the host North Dakota State Bison and Towson on Saturday (Sept. 5).

BAKKER TABBED WAC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Senior middle blocker Lauren Bakker has been recognized as the WAC Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight season. The three-time first team all-con-ference performer not only led the WAC in blocks (1.26 per set average) last season but also placed second in the league in hitting with a .352 clip. The Kaysville, Utah (Davis HS) product also became UVU's all-time leader in every blocking category after a standout junior campaign in 2014. She'll enter her senior season leading the Utah Valley record books in total blocks (453), block assists (401), solo blocks (52) and blocks per set average (1.34). Bakker was named to the preseason all-conference team along with junior outside hitter Macky Fifita. The newly married Fifita (formerly Treanor) was a second team All-WAC performer in 2014 after leading the Wolverines in both kills and kills per set average with respective tallies of 331 and 2.98.

WOLVERINES PICKED FIFTH IN PRESEASON POLL A year removed from tying for fourth in the WAC standings with an 8-6 conference record, the league's eight head coaches picked Utah Valley to finish fith in the pre-season poll. After winning back-to-back regular-season and tournament titles in their final two years of play in the Great West Conference (2011 & 2012) the Wolverines will be looking for their first confernce crown in their third season of action in the WAC this season. The reigning conference champion UMKC Kangaroos were picked to repeat in the preseason poll this year while New Mexico State was tabbed to finish second. Seattle U, who eliminated UVU in a tough five-set battle in the WAC Tourna-ment last season, was selected third while the 2014 WAC Tournament Champion CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners were fourth. Grand Canyon, UTRGV and Chicago State round out the poll in sixth, seventh and eighth places, respectively.

NEWLY HITCHED WOLVERINES A trio of Wolverine volleyball players got married over the summer as there is now a total of four married student-athletes on UVU's 2015 roster. Junior Macky Fifita (formerly Treanor) married Joshua Fifita in May, while senior Megan Jenkins (formerly Hunt) also married Carson Jenkins in May and sophomore Madison Dennison (formerly Wolford) married fellow UVU student-athlete Dustin Dennison (wrestling) in June. The three along with senior Lauren Bakker (formerly Stringham) make up the married Wolverines.

UTAH VALLEY TO HOST 2014 NATIONAL RUNNER-UP BYU Saturday, Sept. 19 will not only mark UVU's 2015 home opener but it will also pit the Wolverines against the 2014 national runner-up and neighboring rival BYU Cougars. The Cougars are currently ranked 12th on the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll. The contest will mark the 11th all-time meeting between the University Parkway foes and the fifth time that BYU will make the short five-mile trek to Orem.

ATOA'S 17TH YEAR AT THE HELM Head coach Sam Atoa is in his 17th season at the helm of UVU volleyball this fall making him the second longest tenured coach currently at Utah Valley. During his 16 seasons, his Wolverines have posted a 345-177 overall record (.661 winning percent-age), including a 207-146 mark in 12 NCAA Division I seasons (.586). He also helped guide UVU from a junior college athletics program all the way to a NCAA Division I member. During his four seasons at the NJCAA level he helped guide his Wolverines to a third and sixth-place national finish.

WAC VOLLEYBALL Every Western Athletic Conference institution sponsors the sport of women's vol-leyball, so the league consists of eight teams (CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, Missouri-Kansas City, New Mexico State, Seattle U, UTRGV and Utah Valley).

The top six eligible teams -- with the exception of Grand Canyon -- will advance to the 2015 WAC Tournament (Nov. 19-21) at Missouri-Kansas City's Swinney Recreation Center, where the winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tourna-ment. ABOUT UVU’S ATHLETICS NCAA HISTORY Until 2003, Utah Valley University competed as a NJCAA athletic program. The 2003-04 season was the school’s first competing at the NCAA Division I level. In the summer of 2009, UVU’S provisional status was lifted and the program became a full member of NCAA Division I on July 8, 2009. Until then, UVU teams and individuals were not eligible to compete in NCAA championship events.

The Wolverine volleyball team spent six seasons as an independent before joining the Great West Conference in 2009. Utah Valley played four seasons in the GWC before joining the WAC in the fall of 2013. UVU also became a university in 2008, changing its name from Utah Valley State College (UVSC) to Utah Valley University (UVU).

The 2014 season marked Sam Atoa's 16th year as the head coach at Utah Valley University. During his tenure, his Wolverines have posted a 345-177 overall record (.661 winning percentage), including a 207-146 mark in 12 NCAA Division I seasons (.586).

This past season, which was his second in the Western Athletic Conference, Atoa led his Wolverines to a fourth-place finish in WAC play with an 8-6 league record and a 14-18 record overall. The previous year, which marked UVU's first in the new league,

Atoa's squad tied for third with an 11-5 conference clip. That year Atoa also recorded his fifth straight season with 18 or more victories with an 18-15 overall record. The 2013 season also marked the ninth straight year that Atoa's club recorded a winning season.

Atoa's teams' have also excelled in the classroom over the years, as the 2014 season marked the fourth straight year and seventh overall that his Wolverines were honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association with AVCA Team Academic Award recognition.

Prior to his current run in the WAC, Atoa led UVU to its second consecutive Great West Confer-ence regular season title in 2012 -- with a 7-1 league record -- and its first GWC Tournament Championship. That season, his squad won all six sets it played in the conference tournament en route to the tournament title. Atoa was honored by the league as the conference's coach of the year for the second straight season following his teams' impressive run.

In 2011, Atoa coached Utah Valley to its third consecutive 20-win season, as the squad posted a 23-9 record -- the most wins ever by UVU in its Division I era. The Wolverines also picked up their first-ever Great West Conference Regular Season Championship after storming through conference with a 9-1 record. The Wolverines notched a stellar 14-2 mark at home, including a five-set win over Syracuse in UVU's first-ever meeting with a Big East program. These accom-plishments earned Atoa his first GWC Coach of the Year award.

In 2010, Atoa once again led his Wolverines to a 20-plus win season as they finished with an impressive 21-11 overall record. His team once again finished toward the top of the Great West as well, as they went 9-3 to earn a second place finish.

In 2009, Atoa led his club to another successful season at the Division I level as his team won then a school-record 22 matches and finished 22-10 overall. He also led UVU to a second place finish in its inaugural year of Great West Conference play, as his team finished second in both regular season play with a 10-2 record and at the GWC Tournament. Not only did his Wolverines excel in conference action but also against Division I powerhouses as Atoa led his team to its first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent as UVU defeated the #17 ranked Utah Utes, for the first time, at home by a score of 3-1.

Atoa also led his team to a very impressive season in 2007 as the Wolverines put up 21 wins while winning their second consecutive Division I Independent Championship. For the success, Atoa was named the Independent Coach of the Year for the second time as UVU swept all four major year-end Independent awards. Utah Valley breezed through the 2007 Independent Championship under Atoa, sweeping each of its three opponents en route to its second title in three seasons. The 2007 campaign marked the third consecutive season that an Atoa-coached player was named the Independent Setter of the Year. Kristi Lindley received that honor after former assistant Lacee Jones (Koelliker) won the award in both 2005 and 2006.

Atoa's spikers finished 17-11 in 2006, following up an 18-11 season and a Division I Indepen-dent Championship in 2005. During that Independent Championship season, UVU won 10 of its last 11 matches and Atoa was named the Division I Independent Coach of the Year.

In their second season as a Division I program in 2004 the Wolverines finished with an 11-16 record that included wins over Memphis, Central Florida, Montana, Portland State, and Boise State. As well as two wins each over fellow Div. I Independent teams: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American. In the first year of Division I competition in 2003, Atoa led the Wol-verine volleyball program to a 10-14 record, with wins over Div. I opponents Boise State and Pac-12 foe Washington State.

Atoa took over the reins of the UV volleyball program in 1999 after six years as an assistant to former head coach Lori Richards. In his first season at the helm of the Wolverine volleyball program, Atoa led UV to a 32-12 record. The Wolverines just missed a trip to the national tour-nament with a tight, five-set loss in the district championship. Then, in just his second season at the helm, Atoa led UV to the national tournament and a third-place finish in the nation. The third-place finish equaled UV's best showing ever at nationals.

Atoa was named Tachikara/AVCA Junior College National Coach of the Year and Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2002, Atoa led the Wolverines to a sixth-place finish at nationals.

In May of 2006, 2010 and 2014, Atoa has been able to take his volleyball teams on a venture to his homeland of Samoa and also to New Zealand. The idea came to Atoa after devastating tsu-namis have struck his home country and Atoa knew that he had to do something to help. Prior to each trip, Atoa and his team have collected thousands of items, including medical supplies, hygiene kits, furniture, sporting goods, computers, books and clothing in Utah and shipped to Samoa. When the team arrived they were able to deliver those items to those in need. On the trips, Atoa has led his team on a journey filled with service where they visited schools, hospitals, elderly care centers and focused to help aid the hardest hit areas of the tsunami. While on the trips, Atoa has also taken took his teams on a tour of New Zealand.

Atoa played volleyball for Brigham Young University from 1984 to 1988, and helped led the Cougars to three consecutive National Collegiate Club Championships. In 1989, Atoa started his coaching career at BYU assisting Coach Carl McGown when the program was officially sanctioned as an NCAA sport. In 1990, Atoa accepted a supervisor position in the Intramural program at Utah Valley and traveled back and forth between both schools for a year to fulfill his obligations.

In 1991 Atoa accepted the position to be the women's volleyball assistant at Utah Valley. In 1993 he also accepted the position to be the Intramural Director and remained in that position until 2001 while still coaching. Atoa was born and raised in Pesega, Samoa, and has a rich cultural and athletic background.

He is highly honored and respected in his country, having received the Papalii or "Son of the King" title from the late Head of State of Samoa, His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II. Atoa went to high school at the Church College of Western Samoa and graduated with high honors. After graduating from high school, Atoa went to BYU-Hawaii and played volleyball for two years. He earned his way through school by entertaining and dancing at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

In 1982 he served an LDS Church Mission in the California San Jose Mission. Following his mis-sion, he moved to Provo and attended BYU where and earned a spot on the club team that went on to attain national prominence. Atoa and his wife, Lori, reside in Orem and are the parents of six children: Sam, Bradley, Devri, Andrew, Darci and Saini.
