Distinguishing Characteristics The Finishes Technician Senior is distinguished from the Finishes Technician Journeyman in that incumbents in the Senior level have the knowledge and experience to perform a broader range of assignments with less supervision. Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities The Finishes Technician Senior reports to a Foreman. This classification trains and guides hourly and/or student employees. Typical Functions 1. Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of floor coverings, including carpeting, rubber, vinyl, composite, tile, wood, laminate, urethane, etc. 2. Prepares basic layouts for all types of floor coverings. 3. Measures and cuts covering materials according to blueprints and sketches. 4. Prepares labor and materials estimates for small projects. 5. Consults with customers to select the most appropriate flooring for their needs. 6. Performs preventive maintenance on specialty floor coverings, such as urethane track floors and rubber flooring.

Summary

Typical Functions

1. Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of floor coverings, including carpeting, rubber, vinyl, composite, tile, wood, laminate, urethane, etc.

2. Prepares basic layouts for all types of floor coverings.3. Measures and cuts covering materials according to blueprints and sketches.4. Prepares labor and materials estimates for small projects.5. Consults with customers to select the most appropriate flooring for their needs.6. Performs preventive maintenance on specialty floor coverings, such as urethane track floors and

rubber flooring.7. Completes building audits for assigned locations to evaluate the condition of floor covering and

identify any repairs that are required.8. Prepares surfaces before painting: removes nails, washes area, scrapes, sands, applies putty,

patches holes, applies mudding, tapes, etc.9. Mixes, blends, and matches paint to proper color and consistency using a computer program.10. Hangs wallpaper and applies other decorative finish elements.11. Operates equipment, such as spray equipment, striping machine, scaffolding, and motorized

lifts.12. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.13. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

14. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.15. Assists in work in other areas of the shop, including upholstery, and signage.16. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.2. Knowledge of different types of floor covering and installation and repair techniques.3. Knowledge of repair process for walls and surfaces.4. Ability to select and apply paint.5. Ability to mix and match paint colors.6. Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.7. Basic computer skills.8. Skilled in employing a myriad of floor covering methods and techniques.9. Ability to read and understand specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.10. Ability to complete projects to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of directly related work experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
