Drivers found under the inuence of any substance, and still recklessly choose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, put everyone on the road in danger, including themselves. According to NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Re- porting System, drunk driving accounted for 29 percent -- or 10,511-- of motor vehicle trac crash deaths in 2018. During summer months, it’s commonplace for more vehicles to be on the road at night. In 2018 alone, 193 people died in motor vehicle trac crashes over the July Fourth holiday. Forty percent -- or 78 -- of those fatalities oc- curred in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. This compares to 2017, when 38 percent of the July Fourth holiday period fatalities occurred in alco- hol-impaired driving crashes. Remember these tips for a safe night on the roads: -- It is never OK to drink and drive. Even if you have had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. -- If available, use your community’s sober ride program -- If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement -- Do you have friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and plan to get your friend home safely. Two UT Tyler students and two TJC students have been accepted as 2020 fellows. Participants are mentored by UT Tyler College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering faculty. All research interactions will be held with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in mind due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We are both fortunate and proud to have such dedicated faculty to promote student success and continue the academy during an unprecedented time,” said Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, UT Tyler LSAMP campus director and chair of computer science. The program, sponsored by UT System and sup- ported by the National Science Foundation, is de- signed to provide research experiences to undergrad- uate students from underrepresented populations and encourage them to pursue graduate-level science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies.
