September 29, 2014 September 29, 20144Civilians, uniformed men light candles for peace

As the whole nation marks September as peace month,

army soldiers of the 8th Infantry Division and their civilian friends lighted candles for peace, dusk of Sept. 26. Major General Jet Velarmino led the ceremony after his civilian

friends took turns to commit their pledge of peace. Calbayog City mayor Ronald Aquino, newly appointed Chairman of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) pledged his whole heart support for the pursuit of what he termed “just and lasting peace.”

Pres. Aquino appointed mayor Aquino as the Chairman of RPOC, just this September. Aquino said he is ready to assume office and learn from his predecessors ways to sustain peace in the area-once known as haven of non-peaceful folks. Joy Monsanto of the Department of Interior and Local Government, Sangguniang Panlungsod Max Pescos of Catbalogan City also offered their peace-support. Emy Bonifacio of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) instructed everyone to light a candle as she led the Pledge for Peace which read in part “ I pledge to support peace in every way possible, for I am and will always be a Filipino, for a just and lasting Peace.” White doves were also released , after which the peace-advocates sang “If We Hold on Together” which provided the finishing touches of the ceremony. Local press attends training on child-friendly reporting

To ensure that all local media practitioners in Eastern Samar

are aware of child protection laws and protocols in proper handling of children, PLAN International Inc., conducted “Training on Child Protection and Child -Sensitive Reporting and Local Media Briefing on Positive Discipline,” on September 26, 2014 at Markyz Pension House, Brgy. Balud, this City. During the training, a session on the concepts and measures of child protection, such as

encouraging child participation and treating children in a manner that is respectful of their rights, integrity, and dignity was conducted. The training also discussed the guidelines on child sensitive reporting, including the preservation of the privacy of children victims and compliance to children’s request if they do not want their photos to be taken. In the afternoon, a field visit or local media briefing on child protection initiatives and promotion

of positive and non-violent discipline was conducted in the municipalities of Maydolong and Llorente. According to Jason Lozano, Project Manager of the said organization, given its impact to society, the media plays an important role in ensuring that all children are protected. Lozano further said, aside from being the voice to stop violations of children’s rights, journalists can also serve as models
