he year 2011 has been an extraordinarily exciting time for theUniversity of St. Thomas. In addition to achieving a significantlyimproved retention rate of 82 percent, up 7 percent from the

previous 75 percent, we made tremendous strides in moving theUniversity toward its goal of being a great Catholic university.

For one, the Cameron School of Business achieved accreditation

by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business

(AACSB). This accreditation is considered internationally as the

most prestigious professional recognition an institution and its business programs can earn.

A second major accomplishment was successfully moving forward our plans to reopen the School

of Nursing that resulted in approval from the Texas Board of Nursing, on July 21, 2011, to offer a Bachelor

of Science in Nursing, and accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission

on Colleges (SACS COC) in November 2011. We began offer pre-nursing courses in the fall of 2011 and

will enroll the first class of nursing students in the summer of 2012.

St. Thomas is in a unique position to train future medical personnel in integrating faith with health

care. Our proximity to the world’s largest medical center ensures that these students will have

opportunities to be involved in cutting-edge medical advances. Donations by friends and supporters of

St. Thomas provided the financial means to establish five endowed chairs in nursing, including one

honoring Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza.

A third accomplishment was the expansion of our off-campus Master of Education offerings.

Now, the graduate program curriculum is taught at 14 different sites in the Greater Houston area, serving

more than 900 students in the program in a variety of suburban school districts.

In the academic year ending 2011, the University awarded $9.2 million in institutional aid to 1,239

students, ensuring that they will have the opportunity to pursue and complete a college education at an

institution where faith, character and leadership are primary focuses. In the current year, we have

increased awards to $9.7 million in institutional aid to our students.

Recognizing that we cannot rest on our laurels, our Board of Directors launched a Capital Campaign,

Faith in Our Future. This initiative includes the School of Nursing, a Center for Science and Health

Professions, and a Performing Arts Center, as well as additional endowed chairs and programs, and

endowed scholarships.

St. Thomas has been richly blessed by you, our donors, who have given generously to the University.

As we confront the challenges of an ever-changing world, we will continue to strengthen the core values

of our founding Basilian Fathers: goodness, discipline and knowledge.

With best wishes and deep appreciation,

Robert IvanyPRESIDENT

James Doangets full-tuition scholarship to medical school

For James Doan, a graduate of the 2011 class, doing undergraduate research in biochemistry at the University of St. Thomas was a way to fuelhis passion for science and get ahead of thecurriculum. It also helped him earn a full-tuition,merit scholarship to the Texas Tech UniversityHealth Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso.

Because the medical school is fairly new, Doantakes his place in the third class, which includes 80 students. St. Thomas has a high acceptance rateinto medical school. Dr. Michelle Steiger, assistantprofessor of chemistry and physics and co-chair ofthe Health Professions Advisory Committee, saidbetween 2005-2010, 71 percent of applicants fromUST were accepted into medical school.

Doan’s graduation from St. Thomas and acceptanceinto medical school continues the family legacy. His two older brothers, John and David, alsoattended UST, and now both are physicians.

Learn more about the University’s pre-health program, and view a

chemistry class with Dr. Bill Tinnerman. Get the free app at http://gettag.mobi to view on your smartphone or go to

James is a conscientious, smartand dedicated student, whoputs extra effort into everythinghe does. He is a testament tothe strong biochemistry degreeprogram at St. Thomas. He will, no doubt, be a leader of faith and character.

M I S S I O N STAT E M E N T

We are the University of St. Thomas, the Catholic university in the

heart of Houston. We are committed to the Catholic intellectual

tradition and the dialogue between faith and reason. By pursuing

excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, we embody and

instill in our students the core values of our founders, the Basilian

Fathers: goodness, discipline, and knowledge.

We foster engagement in a diverse, collaborative community.

As a comprehensive university grounded in the liberal arts, we

educate students to think critically, communicate effectively,

succeed professionally, and lead ethically.
