  • FOREWORDRebellion is in the very air we breathe. The philosophy of pleasing one's

self seems to be the keynote of our age. In an era when coldhearted cynicismand blatant, hardened iniquity are so prevalent, the old-fashioned quality of"wide-eyed" innocence known in earlier days has now become nearly extinct.

The concept of reverence is a direct contrast to today's casual, self-centered attitudes. Reverence is' defined as honor mixed with love and awe.It implies a humble, childlike wonder which is very precious and rare now-adays, even among the professed people of God.

The lessons for this quarter, entitled In the Presence of God, are designedto strengthen and enhance our appreciation of the beautiful graces of rever-ence and respect that should freely flow from the hearts of worshipers of thetrue God. Only with this deep sense of awe and wonder at the marvelouscreative and redeeming power of our Lord, can we press on in the footstepsof holy men of old and prepare our souls for the glories of eternity.

"Some seem to think that if a man has a wholesome fear of the judg-ments of God, it is a proof that he is destitute of faith, but this is nof so. Aproper fear of God, in believing His threatenings, works the peaceable fruitsof righteousness, by causing the trembling soul to flee to Jesus. Many oughtto have this spirit today, and turn to the Lord with humble contrition, for theLord has not given so many terrible threatenings, pronounced so severe judg-ments in His Word, simply to have them recorded, but He means what Hesays. One says, 'Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked thatforsake thy law.' Paul says, 'Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we per-suade men.' "-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1100.

"There should be an intelligent knowledge of how to come to God inreverence and godly fear with devotional love. There is a growing lack ofreverence for our Maker, a growing disregard of His greatness and Hismajesty. But God is speaking to us in these last days. We hear His voice inthe storm, in the rolling thunder. We hear of the calamities He permits in theearthquakes, the breaking forth of waters, and the destructive elementssweeping all before them. We hear of ships going down in the tempestuousocean. God speaks to families who have refused to recognize Him, sometimesin the whirlwind and storm, sometimes face to face as He talked with Moses.Again He whispers His love to the little trusting child and to the gray-hairedsire in his dotage. And earthly wisdom has a wisdom as it beholds the unseen.

"When the still small voice which succeeds the whirlwind and the tem-pest that moves the rocks out of position, is heard, let all cover their face, forGod is very near. Let them hide themselves in Jesus Christ; for He is theirhiding place. The cleft in the rock is hidden with His own pierced hand whilethe humble seeker waits in bowed attitude to hear what saith the Lord untoHis servant."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 315, 316.

    The Fear of God

"Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of judgment is come:and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the.fountains of waters" (Revelation 14:7).

    June 25

    1. What aspects of creation should inspire us with reverence for God?Psalms 96:4,5; 139:14; Revelation 14:7.

"It is not by an original power inherent in nature that year by year theearth yields its bounties and continues its march around the sun. The hand ofinfinite power is perpetually at work guiding this planet. It is God's powermomentarily exercised that keeps it in position in its rotation." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 260.

"The mechanism of the human body cannot be fully understood; itpresents mysteries that baffle the most intelligent. It is not as the result of amechanism, which, once set in motion, continues its work, that the pulsebeats and breath follows breath. In God we live and move and have ourbeing. The beating heart, the throbbing pulse, every nerve and muscle in theliving organism, is kept in order and activity by the power of an ever-presentGod."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 417.

"Many illustrations from nature are used by the Bible writers, and aswe observe the things of the natural world, we shall be enabled, under theguiding of the Holy Spirit, more fully to understand the lessons of God'sword."-Education, p. 120.

They are fully satisfied toglorify God; and in His presence, beneath His smile of approbation, theywish for nothing more. In bearing His image, in doing His service and wor-shiping Him, their highest ambition is reached."-The SDA Bible Commentary[E.G. White Comments], vol. 4'-Jp. 1140.

    4. What can we learn about God's sustaining power as shown in visionto the prophet Ezekiel? Ezekiel 1:8.

"In Ezekiel's vision, God had His hand beneath the wings of thecherubim. This is to teach His servants that it is divine power that givesthem success. He will work with them if they will put away iniquity, andbecome pure in heart and life. The heavenly messengers seen by Ezekiel, like a bright light going among the living creatures with the swiftness oflightning, represent the speed with which this work will finally go forward tocompletion. He who slumbers not, who is continually at work for the accom-plishment of His designs, can carry forward His great work harmoniously. That which appears to finite minds entangled and complicated, the Lord'shand can keep in perfect order."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-ments], vol. 4, p. 1161.

"[1 Corinthians 10:1-5 quoted.] The experience of Israel, referred to inthe above words by the apostle, and as recorded in the one hundred fifth andone hundred sixth psalms, contains lessons of warnings that the people ofGod in these last days especially need to study. "Would that every minister of God realized the holiness of his work andthe sacredness of his calling. As divinely appointed messengers, ministersare in a position of awful responsibility.... God calls for men who, likeNathan, Elijah, and John, will bear His message with fearlessness, regard-less of consequences; who will speak the truth, though to do this calls for thesacrifice of all they have."-Gospel Workers, p. 150.

Depend not in it; but often bow down onyour knees before God, and worship Him."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 314.

  • "1 was shown that when God sent His angels anciently to minister orcommunicate to individuals, and these persons learned that they had seenand talked with an angel, they were struck with awe and were afraid thatthey should die. "1 saw some, with strong faith and agonizing cries, pleading with God.Their countenances were pale and marked with deep anxiety, expressive oftheir internal struggle. Firmness and great earnestness was expressed intheir countenances; large drops of perspiration fell from their foreheads. Now and then their faces would light up with marks of God's approbation, and again the same solemn, earnest, anxious look would settle upon them. . . .

"Some, 1 saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and plead-ing. They seemed indifferent and careless.... 1 asked the meaning of theshaking 1 had seen and was shown that it would be caused by the straight tes-timony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans."-Early Writings, pp. 269, 270.

"Soon everything that can be shaken will be shaken, that those thingsthat cannot be shaken may remain."-Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 15, 16.

    The Narne of God

"Holy and reverend is his name" (Psalm 111:9).

"Angels, when they speak [God's] name, veil their faces. With whatreverence, then, should we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!"-Prophets and Kings, p. 49.

THE MEANING OF GOD'S NAMED Sunday

    July 2

    1. How did God express His name to Moses, and how is this significantfor us? Exodus 3:13-15.

"I AM means an eternal presence; the past, present, and future arealike to God. He sees the most remote events of past history, and the far dis-tant future with as clear a vision as we do those things that are transpiringdaily. We know not what is before us, and if we did, it would not contributeto our eternal welfare. God gives us an opportunity to exercise faith andtrust in the great I AM."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],vol. 1, p. 1099.

    2. Regardless of the language or dialect in which references to theEternal One may be expressed, what should we realize about Him-and about His name? Psalms 99:1-3; 111:9; Jeremiah 10:6, 7.

"We are never in any manner to treat lightly the titles or appellations ofthe Deity."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 106.

"Holy angels have been displeased and disgusted with the irreverentmanner in which many have used the name of God, the great Jehovah.Angels mention that sacred name with the greatest awe, ever veiling theirfaces when they speak the name of God; and the name of Christ is so sacredto them that they speak it with the greatest reverence. But how opposite thespirit and influence attending the 1854 time movement. Some who are stillunder the same influence speak of God as they would of a horse or of anyother commonplace thing. In their prayers they use the words God Almightyin a very common and irreverent manner. Those who do this have no senseof the exalted character of God, of Christ, or of heavenly things."-Testimo-nies, vol. 1, p. 410.

  • CARE TO BE EXERCISEDD Monday

    July 3

    3. Elaborate on the principle given by God in the third commandmentof the Decalogue. Exodus 20:7.

"This commandment not only prohibits false oaths and common swear-ing, but it forbids us to use the name of God in a light or careless manner, without regard to its awful significance. By the thoughtless mention of God incommon conversation, by appeals to Him in trivial matters, and by the fre-quent and thoughtless repetition of His name, we dishonor Him.... Allshould meditate upon His majesty, His purity and holiness, that the heart maybe impressed with a sense of His exalted character; and His holy name shouldbe uttered with reverence and solemnity."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 306, 307.

"Those who take the name of the Lord in vain will find it a fearful thingto fall into the hands of the living God."-My Life Today, p. 282.

    4. What additional counsel does God give us in reference to His name?Leviticus 18:21; 19:12; 21:6.

"[When in vision] I saw a light coming from the glory that encircled theFather, and as it approached near to me, my body trembled and shook like aleaf. I thought that if it should come near me I would be struck out of exis-tence, but the light passed me. Then could I have some sense of the greatand terrible God with whom we have to do. I saw then what faint views somehave of the holiness of God, and how much they take His holy and reverendname in vain, without realizing that it is God, the great and terrible God, ofwhom they are speaking."-Early Writings, p. 70.

    ADDRESSING GOD IN PRAYERD Tuesday

    July 4

    5. What does Jesus teach us about the manner in which we should ad-dress our heavenly Father in prayer? Matthew 6:9.

"To hallow the name of the Lord requires that the words in which wespeak of the Supreme Being be uttered with reverence.... In prayer weenter the audience chamber of the Most High; and we should come beforeHim with holy awe."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 106.

"This name is hallowed by the angels of heaven, by the inhabitants ofunfallen worlds. When you pray, 'Hallowed be Thy name,' you ask that itmay be hallowed in this world, hallowed in you."-Ibid.., p. 107.

    6. What are some irreverent prayer practices against which we arewarned? Matthew 6:7,8.

"While praying, many use careless and irreverent expressions, whichgrieve the tender Spirit of the Lord and cause their petitions to be shut out ofheaven."-My Life Today, p. 282. .

    -10 -

  • "Let not those who kneel around the family altar put their faces in theirhands close down to the chair when they address God. Let them lift up theirheads and with holy awe speak to their heavenly Father, uttering theirwords in tones that can be heard."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 381.

"Reverence should be shown ... for the name of God. Never shouldthat name be spoken lightly or thoughtlessly. Even in prayer its frequent orneedless repetition should be avoided."-Education, p. 243.

"I saw that God's holy name should be used with reverence and awe.The words God Almighty are coupled together and used by some in prayerin a careless, thoughtless manner, which is displeasing to Him. Such have norealizing sense of God or the truth, or they would not speak so irreverentlyof the great and dreadful God, who is soon to judge them in the last day. Saidthe angel, 'Couple them not together; for fearful is His name.' Those whorealize the greatness and majesty of God, will take His name on their lipswith holy awe. He dwelleth in light unapproachable; no man can see Himand live. I saw that these things will have to be understood and correctedbefore the church can prosper."-Early Writings, p. 122.

    OATH TAKINGD Wednesday

    July 5

    7. In regard to oath taking, what distinction did Jesus clarify in Mat-thew 5:34-36 and Matthew 26:63, 64 (first part)?

"[The Jews] had many devices for freeing themselves from the obliga-tion imposed by an oath. They did not fear to indulge in what was really pro-fanity, nor did they shrink from perjury so long as it was veiled by sometechnical evasion of the law.

"Jesus condemned their practices, declaring that their custom in oathtaking was a transgression of the commandment of God. Our Saviour didnot, however, forbid the use of the judicial oath, in which God is solemnlycalled to witness that what is said is truth and nothing but the truth."-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 66, 67.

    8. What basic principle did Jesus teach, and what are its implicationsfor us in everyday life? Matthew 5:37.

"Jesus proceeded to lay down a principle that would make oath takingneedless. He teaches that the exact truth should be the law of speech. [Mat-thew 5:37 quoted.]

"These words condemn all those meaningless phrases and expletivesthat border on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the

.evasion of truth, the flattering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresen-tations in trade, that are current in society and in the business world. Theyteach that no one who tries to appear what he is not, or whose words do notconvey the real sentiment of his heart, can be called truthful.

"If these words of Christ were heeded, they would check the utteranceof evil surmising and unkind criticism; for in commenting upon the actions

    -11-

  • and motives of another, who can be certain of speaking the exact truth? Howoften pride, passion, personal resentment, color the impression given! Aglance, a word, even an intonation of the voice, may be vital with falsehood.Even facts may be so stated as to convey a false impression. And 'whatso-ever is more than' truth, 'is of the evil one.' "-Thoughts From the Mount ofBlessing, pp. 67, 68.

    GLORIFYING HIS NAMED Thursday

    July 6

"In all you do glorify [God's] name. Divest yourselves of selfishness andselfish love."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 71.

"In every act of life you are to make manifest the name of God.... Youcannot hallow His name, you cannot represent Him to the world, unless inlife and character you represent the very life and character of God. This youcan do only through the acceptance of the grace and righteousness ofChrist."-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 107.

    10. How can we continually reap the benefits of God's holy name? Prov-erbs 18:10; John 14:13, 14; 1 John 3:22. Explain how God's glorymust be fully manifested by those who receive His seal of protec-tion in the last days. Revelation 14:1.

"Unless the name of God is written in your forehead-written therebecause God is the center of your thoughts-you will not be meet for theinheritance in light." -Counsels on Stewardship, p. 46.

    2. What caused the Jews to reject this essential truth, and how canprofessed believers today fall into the same trap? John 8:56-59(first part); 2 Corinthians 3:14; 4:4; 1 Timothy 4:1, 2.

"[1 Timothy 4:1,2 quoted.] Before the last developments of the work ofapostasy there will be a confusion of faith. There will not be clear anddefinite ideas concerning the mystery of God. One truth after another will becorrupted.... There are many who deny the preexistence of Christ, andtherefore deny His divinity; they do not accept Him as a personal Saviour. This is a total denial of Christ. "By coming to dwell with us, Jesus was to reveal God both to men andto angels. He was the Word of God-God's thought made audible.... Butnot alone for His earthborn children was this revelation given. Our littleworld is the lesson book of the universe. God's wonderful purpose of grace, the mystery of redeeming love, is the theme into which 'angels desire tolook,' and it will be their study throughout endless ages. • angels beheld the hiding of His glory, that divinity might touch humanity.Christ ever retained the utmost hatred for sin, but He loved the purchase ofHis blood. He suffered in the place of sinful men, taking them into unionwith Himself.

"This is the mystery into which angels desire to look. They desire toknow how Christ could live and work in a fallen world, how He could minglewith sinful humanity. It was a mystery to them that He who hated sin withintense hatred felt the most tender, compassionate sympathy for the beingsthat committed sin."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7,p.904.

    10. What is the twofold role of Christ in the judgment of mankind?1 John 2:1; John 5:22; 2 Corinthians 5:10.

"Jehovah did not deem the plan of salvation complete while invested.only with His love. He has placed at His altar an Advocate clothed in ournature. As our Intercessor, Christ's office work is to introduce us to God asHis sons and daughters. He intercedes in behalf of those who receive Him.With His own blood He has paid their ransom." - Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 177, 178.

"God designed that the Prince of sufferers in humanity should be judgeof the whole world. He who submitted to be arraigned before an earthly tri-bunal, He who came from the heavenly courts to save man from eternaldeath, He whom men despised, rejected, and upon whom they heaped all thecontempt of which human beings inspired by Satan are capable, He who suf-fered the ignominious death of the cross-He alone was to pronounce thesentence of reward or of punishment."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1100.

"The Holy Spirit is Christ's representative, but divested of the per-sonality of humanity, and independent thereof. Cumbered with humanity,

    5. How is the voice of the Holy Spirit different from what people mightnaturally expect? 1 Kings 19:11-13; Isaiah 30:21.

"The Holy Spirit, sent from heaven by the benevolence of infinite love"takes the things of God and reveals them to every soul that has an implicitfaith in Christ. By His power the vital truths upon which the salvation of thesoul depends are impressed upon the mind, and the way of life is made soplain that none need err therein. As we study the Scriptures, we should prayfor the light of God's Holy Spirit to shine upon the word, that we may seeand appreciate its treasures." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 113.

"In the secret place of prayer, where no eye but God's can see, no earbut His can hear, we may pour out our most hidden desires and longings tothe Father of infinite pity, and in the hush and silence of the soul that voicewhich never fails to answer the cry of human need will speak to our hearts."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 84.

"Conscience is the voice of God, heard amid the conflict of human pas-sions; when'it is resisted, the Spirit of God is grieved.

"We want all to understand how the soul is destroyed. It is not that Godsends out a decree that man shall not be saved. He does not throw a dark-ness before the eyes which cannot be penetrated. But man at first resists amotion of the Spirit of God, and, having once resisted, it is less difficult to doso the second time, less the third, and far less the fourth. Then comes theharvest to be reaped from the seed of unbelief and resistance. Oh what a har-vest of sinful indulgences is preparing for the sickle!

"When secret prayer and re~ding of the Scriptures are neglected today, tomorrow they can be omitted with less remonstrance of conscience. Therewill be a long list of omissions, all for a single grain sown in the soil of theheart."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 120.

"God works by the manifestation of His Spirit to reprove and convictthe sinner; and if the Spirit's work is finally rejected, there is no more thatGod can do for the soul. The last resource of divine mercy has beenemployed. The transgressor has cut himself off from God, and sin has noremedy to cure itself. There is no reserved power by which God can work toconvict and convert the sinner. 'Let him alone' (Hosea 4:17) is the divinecommand."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 405.

The habit of careless and irreverent criticism reactsupon the character, in fostering irreverence and unbelief. Many a manindulging in this habit has gone on unconscious of danger, until he was readyto criticize and reject the work of the Holy Spirit." - The Desire ofAges, p. 323.

"The sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit does not lie in any sud-den word or deed; it is the firm, determined resistance of truth and ~vidence.

    -19 -

  • "No one need look upon the sin against the Holy Ghost as somethingmysterious and indefinable. The sin against the Holy Ghost is the sin of per-sistent refusal to respond to the invitation to repent." - The SDA Bible Com-mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1093.

"Why do we not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit, since this isthe means by which we are to receive power? Why do we not talk of it, prayfor it, preach concerning it? The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spiritto us than parents are to give good gifts to their children. For the baptism ofthe Spirit every worker should be pleading with God. Companies should begathered together to ask for special help, for heavenly wisdom, that they Ilfayknow how to plan and execute wisely. Especially should men pray that Godwill baptize His missionaries with the Holy Spirit."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 22.

    10. What promise is given especially for these last days, and what isone main condition attached to it? Zechariah 10:1.

To us is committed the arduous, but happy, glorious work of revealing Christ to those who are in darkness. We are calledto proclaim the special truths for this time. For all this the outpouring of theSpirit is essential. We should pray for it. The Lord expects us to ask Him. Wehave not been wholehearted in this work."- Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 511, 512.

If asked to explain certain state-ments, they can only answer: 'It is so presented in the Scriptures.' "The Word makes the proud humble, the perverse meek and contrite,-the disobedient obedient. The sinful habits natural to man are interwovenwith the daily practice. 7. What words of caution apply to some of the teachings in secularand even religious schools? 1 Timothy 6:20,21; 2 Timothy 3:7; 4:4.How do many follow the example of Judas in distorting the Scrip-tures?

"[Judas, the betrayer] would introduce texts of Scripture that had noconnection with the truths Christ was presenting. These texts, separatedfrom their connection, perplexed the disciples, and increased the discour-agement that was constantly pressing upon them. Yet all this was done byJudas in such a way as to make it appear that he was conscientious. Andwhile the disciples were searching for evidence to confirm the words of theGreat Teacher, Judas would lead them almost imperceptibly on anothertrack. Thus in a very religious, and apparently wise, way he was presentingmatters in a different light from that in which Jesus had given them, andattaching to His words a meaning that He had not conveyed."- The Desire ofAges, p. 719.

"Those who look to the Scriptures to find discrepancies have notspiritual insight. With distorted vision they will see many causes for doubtand unbelief in things that are really plain and simple. But to those who takeGod's word with reverence, seeking to learn His will that they may obey it,all is changed. They are filled with awe and wonder as they contemplate thepurity and exalted excellence of the truths revealed." - Testimonies, vol. 5,p.705.

While everything in nature is governed by natural laws, man alone, of allthat inhabits the earth, is amenable to moral law. That law of ten pre-cepts of the greatest love that can be presented to man is the voice of Godfrom heaven speaking to the soul in promise, 'This do, and you will not comeunder the dominion and control of Satan.' God desires us tobe happy, and He gave us the precepts of the law that in obeying them wemight have joy....

"To all who have a desire for truth I would say: Do not give credence tounauthenticated reports as to what Sister White has done or said or written. If you desire to know what the Lord has revealed through her, read her pub-lished works. 5. How does the example of Joseph warn us against succumbing totemptations that will come to us in secret? Genesis 39:3-9; Prov~erbs 7:7-10, 18-20.

"Joseph's faith and integrity were to be tested by fiery trials. His mas-ter's wife endeavored to entice the young man to transgress the law of God.Heretofore he had remained untainted by the corruption teeming in thatheathen land; but this temptation, so sudden, so strong, so seductive-howshould it be met? ... With inexpressible anxiety, angels looked upon thescene.

"Joseph's answer reveals the power of religious principle. He would notbetray the confidence of his master on earth, and, whatever the conse-quences, he would be true to his Master in heaven. Under the inspecting eyeof God and holy angels many take liberties of which they would not be guiltyin the presence of their fellow men, but Joseph's first thought was of God."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 217.

    6. What will result from a more vivid understanding of God's omni-science and omnipresence? Hebrews 4:13; Psalm 33:8, 14, 15.

"If we were to cherish an habitual impression that God sees and hearsall that we do and say and keeps a faithful record of our words and actions, and that we must meet it all, we would fear to sin. Let the young everremember that wherever they are, and whatever they do, they are in thepresence of God. No part of our conduct escapes observation. We cannothide our ways from the Most High. Human laws, though sometimes severe,

    - 30-

  • are often transgressed without detection, and hence with impunity. But notso with the law of God. The deepest midnight is no cover for the guilty one.He may think himself alone, but to every deed there is an unseen witness. The very motives of his heart are open to divine inspection. Every act, everyword, every thought, is as distinctly marked as though there were only oneperson in the whole world, and the attention of heaven were centered uponhim."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 217, 218.

"Only the sense of God's presence can banish the fear that, for thetimid child, would make life a burden. Let him fix in his memory the prom-ise, 'The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, anddelivereth them.' Psalm 34:7."-Education, p. 255.

    8. With what words did the apostle Paul seek to instill in his flock adesire to please God, and not merely Paul? Philippians 2:12, 13.How should a realization of God's presence keep fresh in our mindsscenes of the judgment and prevent us from committing secret sins?

"Various sins that are cherished and practiced by professed Christiansbring the frown of God upon the church. In the day when the Ledger ofHeaven shall be opened, the Judge will not in words express to man his guilt, but will cast one penetrating, convicting glance, and every deed, every trans-action of life, will be vividly impressed upon the memory of the wrongdoer. The person will not, as in Joshua's day, need to be hunted out from tribe tofamily, but his own lips will confess his shame, his selfishness, covetousness, dishonesty, dissembling, and fraud. His sins, hidden from the knowledge ofman, will then be proclaimed, as it were, upon the housetop."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 493.

"We should pray in the family circle, and above all we must not neglectsecret prayer, for this js the life of the soul. It is impossible for the soul toflourish while prayer is neglected. Family or public prayer alone is not suffi-cient. In solitude let the soul be laid open to the inspecting eye of God.Secret prayer is to be heard only by the prayer-hearing God. No curious ear

    - 31-

  • is to receive the burden of such petitions. In secret prayer the soul is freefrom surrounding influences, free from excitement. Calmly, yet fervently, will it reach out after God. Sweet and abiding will be the influence emanat-ing from Him who seeth in secret, whose ear is open to hear the prayer aris-ing from the he.art. By calm, simple faith the soul holds communion with Godand gathers to itself rays of divine light to strengthen and sustain it in theconflict with Satan. God is our tower of strength." -Steps to Christ, p. 98.

    10. How does the Bible depict the beauty and delight of time devotedexclusively to God? Psalm 84:4-8, 12; Song of Solomon 2:3,4.

"We all lose much sweet communion with God by our restlessness, bynot encouraging moments of reflection and prayer." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 492.

"Many, even in their seasons of devotion, fail of receiving the blessingof real communion with God. They are in too great haste. With hurried stepsthey press through the circle of Christ's loving presence, pausing perhaps amoment within the sacred precincts, but not waiting for counsel. They haveno time to remain with the divine Teacher. With their burdens they return totheir work.

"These workers can never attain the highest success until they learnthe secret of strength. They must give themselves time to think, to pray, towait upon God for a renewal of physical, mental, and spiritual power. Theyneed the uplifting influence of His Spirit. Receiving this, they will bequickened by fresh life. The wearied frame and tired brain will be refreshed, the burdened heart will be lightened.

    5. What can we, who are living in the antitypical Day of Atonement, learn from the worship of God in"Old Testament times? 1 Corin-thians 10:11.

"From the sacredness which was attached to the earthly sanctuary,Christians may learn how they should regard the place where the Lordmeets with His people."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 491.

"In the sanctuary and the temple, that were the earthly symbols ofGod's dwelling· place, one apartment was sacred to His presence. The veilinwrought with cherubim at its entrance was not to be lifted by any handsave one. To lift that veil and intrude unbidden into the sacred mystery ofthe most holy place was death. For above the mercy seat and the bowed, worshiping angels dwelt the glory of the Holiest, glory upon which no manmight look and live. On the one day of the year appointed for ministry in themost holy place, the high priest with trembling entered God's presence, while clouds of incense veiled the glory from his sight. Throughout thecourts of the temple every sound was hushed. No priests ministered at thealtars. The hosts of worshipers, bowed in silent awe, sent up their petitionsfor God's mercy."-Ibid., vol. 8, pp. 284, 285.

"When the word is spoken, you should remember, brethren, that youare listening to the voice of God through His delegated servant. Listen atten-tively.... Sometimes young men and women have so little reverence forthe house and worship of God that they keep up a continual communicationwith each other during the sermon. Could these see the angels of God look-ing upon them and marking their doings, they would be filled with shame, with abhorrence of themselves."-Ibid., p. 493.

    7. What do we learn from faithful Esther about the significance ofone's apparel? Esther 5:1, 2 (first part). How can a balanced under-standing of this principle apply to our meetings with the King of theuniverse?

"In the minds of many there are no more sacred thoughts connected withthe house of God than with the most common place. Some will enter the placeof worship with their hats on, in soiled, dirty clothes. Such do not realize thatthey are to meet with God and holy angels.... Because of the irreverence inattitude, dress, and deportment, and lack of a worshipful frame of mind, Godhas often turned His face away from those assembled for His worship.

"All should be taught to be neat, clean, and orderly in their dress, butnot to indulge in that external adorning which is wholly inappropriate for thesanctuary. There should be no display of apparel; for this encourages irrev-erence. The attention of the people is often called to this or that fine articleof dress, and thus thoughts are intruded that should have no place in thehearts of the worshipers. God is to be the subject of thought, the object ofworship; and anything that attracts the mind from the solemn, sacred serv-ice is an offense to Him."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 498, 499.

    - 35-

  • "It is too true that reverence for the house of God has become almostextinct....

"Nearly all need to be taught how to conduct themselves in the house ofGod. Parents should not only teach, but command, their children to enter thesanctuary with sobriety and reverence.

"The moral taste of the worshipers in God's holy sanctuary must beelevated, refined, sanctified. This matter has been sadly neglected. Its im-portance has been overlooked, and as the result, disorder and irreverencehave become prevalent, and God has been dishonored. When the leaders inthe church, ministers and people, fathers and mothers, have not had ele-vated views of this matter, what could be expected of the inexperiencedchildren? They are too often found in groups, away from the parents, whoshould have charge of them. Notwithstanding they are in the presence ofGod, and His eye is looking upon them, they are light and trifling, theywhisper and laugh, are careless, irreverent, and inattentive. They areseldom instructed that the minister is God's ambassador, that the messagehe brings is one of God's appointed agencies in the salvation of souls."-Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 495-497.

    10. Why is it so important that we understand how to properly worshipthe God of heaven? Isaiah 1:12, 13; Ephesians 5:17.

"Unless correct ideas of true worship and true reverence are impressedupon the people, there will be a growing tendency to place the sacred andeternal on a level with common things, and those professing the truth will bean offense to God and a disgrace to religion. They can never, with theiruncultivated ideas, appreciate a pure and holy heaven, and be prepared tojoin with the worshipers in the heavenly courts above, where all is purity andperfection, where every being has perfect reverence for God and Hisholiness."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 500.

"The seventh day is God's chosen day. He has not left this matter to beremodeled by priest or ruler. It is of too great importance to be left to humanjudgment.
