A SPECIAL BRIEFING FOR KEY FRIENDS OF THE U.S. POULTRY & EGG ASSOCIATION NOVEMBER 2013 U.S. Poultry & Egg Association’s research program was implemented 50 years ago in response to the poultry industry’s need for research focused on solving the most important problems facing the industry. Poultry health was the major focus of research funding in the early years. Over the past five decades, our research program has become an indispensable asset for the U.S. poultry industry, helping it overcome many of the hurdles that initially impaired its development and success. “The impact of our research program has been very significant. Many of the great advances in disease control, nutrition, poultry production, genetics, animal welfare, food safety, and environmental management in the poultry industry have come about as a direct result of research funded by USPOULTRY,” said Dr. John Glisson, vice president of research programs. chick-fil-a’s cathy to speak at executive Luncheon

We are pleased to announce that

Dan Cathy, President and COO of Chick-fil-A, will be the keynote speaker at our executive luncheon to be held during the International Production & Processing Expo.

The Foundation will host the luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014.

We continue to solicit your ideas on how the Foundation can provide more solutions to the challenges the industry faces.

In visiting with industry leaders, it is clear our Foundation must invest today to strengthen the industry tomorrow. It is exciting to hear from individuals who have benefited from the Foundation and who see the positive impact it is having on our industry.

I look forward to hearing your ideas at the 2014 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, January 28 to 30. For more information, visit www.ippexpo.org.

The Boards of our Association and Foundation have created a new research program to fund research that addresses current issues facing the poultry

industry. The new USPOULTRY Board Research Initiative will augment the success of our existing program by focusing on specific research needs.

Two research projects have been selected for funding this year. The first is the exploration of systemic Salmonella infection in chickens and turkeys and the determination of the relationship with Salmonella contamination of ground poultry products. The second project will seek research leading to advances in poultry well-being. First-year funding for this initiative is estimated to be $250,000.

You spoke; we listened. In conversations with industry leaders, many have expressed great interest in Co-Op programs. Co-operative education is where students

regularly alternate time spent in the classroom with time in the workforce. They are considered paid professionals working in jobs of increasing responsibility directly related to their field of study.
