Each summer, the University School of Jackson offers a great variety of day camps, fine arts and athletic camps, and academic courses for children of all ages. Most camps are open to all, not just USJ students. Feel free to invite friends who do not have children at USJ. Many of our camps fill up quickly, so we encourage you to register today!

A $25 deposit per camp is required. Camp registration

Camp BruinsYour children will love our organized, 10-week summer daycare program full of learning experiences and fun activities, which are developmentally appropriate for 2-year-olds through rising 6th graders.

Structured weekly themes include water play, arts and crafts, jumpers and inflatables, physical activities and games, and music.

The camp is open from May 23 through July 29, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The camp will be closed July 4. USJ families may register February 1-March 15. Non-USJ families may register March 16-April 15.

Girls BasketballGrades: Rising 2nd-8th • Price: $105Time: (Tuesday-Friday) 9 a.m. to noon Instructors: Girls’ Basketball Head Coach Tony Shutes and the USJ Lady Bruins basketball team Locations: USJ Middle and Upper School gyms

This camp will focus on ball handling, shooting, and fundamentals. Campers will also participate in three-on-three, free throws, and hotshot competitions! For more information, contact Coach Shutes at [email protected].

Guided Summer Reading: Week 1 of 3Grades: Rising 6th-10th • Price: $130(Dates are June 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, and 17) Times: Rising 6th: 9 to 10 a.m. Rising 7th: 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Rising 8th: 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Rising 9th: 1 to 2 p.m. Rising 10th: 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Instructor: Middle School English Teacher Dana Simmons Location: Mrs. Simmons’ Middle School classroom

Mrs. Simmons will guide students through the most complicated summer reading novel assigned for each grade. Students will get a head start on the upcoming school year by getting a thorough review of the book and by learning how to glean key information so they are ready for the discussion and test in class once school begins. ACT English PrepGrades: Rising 10th-12th • Price: $155Time: (Monday-Friday) 1 to 3 p.m. Instructor: Upper School AP English Language Teacher Katie Ramer Location: Mrs. Ramer’s Upper School classroom

Mrs. Ramer will use a mixture of lecture, guided instruction, and student practice to refresh students of the English usage and rhetorical skills needed to be successful on the English portion of the ACT. Students will learn proven test-taking strategies for standardized tests, take and score practice ACT tests, review critical reading skills related to passage analysis, review writing skills, and practice ACT writing skills concepts. This course also serves to be good preparation for students wanting to get a head start on their upcoming fall English course. For more information, contact Mrs. Ramer at [email protected].

ACT Math PrepGrades: Rising 10th-12th • Price: $155Time: (Monday-Friday) 10 a.m. to noon Instructor: Middle School Honors Math Teacher Bryce King Location: Mr. King’s Middle School classroom

Mr. King will refresh students on the mathematical material needed to be successful on the math portion of the ACT. Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry topics will be reviewed, and general test-taking strategy will be discussed. This course is designed as a good preparation for students taking the upcoming ACT. This course will also give a general review of 9th- through 11th-grade mathematics and be good preparation for students wanting to get a head start on their upcoming fall math course. Camp emphasizes developing and improving the soccer skills of each camper. Techniques such as shooting, passing, receiving, heading, dribbling, and goalkeeping are learned through individual and group instruction. Beginners and experienced players are welcome! Campers will be divided by skill level and age. Camp emphasizes the fundamentals of golf, rules, and etiquette through drills and tournament play. Registration begins May 1, 2016 at Jackson National Golf Course or online at www.golfjn.com/online-store. Each camp is limited to the first 24 paid campers. LEGO Programming and RoboticsGrades: Rising 5th-9th • Price: $180Time: (Monday-Friday) 9 a.m. to noon Instructor: Union University Professor and Computer Science Depart. Chair Dr. Jan WilmsLocation: Middle School computer lab

Dr. Wilms will teach this fun course once again. Space is extremely limited. Lego kits will be provided to use during the camp, but students are encouraged to bring their own. $50 deposit required. Registered campers will be required to have software loaded onto their student MacBooks prior to the course. We will notify registered campers when the software upload will take place. Students will create art projects each day that correspond with our favorite children’s books. This popular camp filled completely last year and had a waiting list. June 13-17

Drivers Ed Age: Age 15 by June 1 • Price: $400Time: (Monday-Friday) 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Instructors: John Herriman and Jim HardegreeLocation: Upper School cafeteria

This course includes 30 hours of mandatory classroom instruction and 6 hours of additional behind-the-wheel instruction. Students should be 15 years old on or before June 1, 2016. This class usually fills up quickly, so don’t delay in registering.

Pay your $200 deposit or the full amount online. The deposit is nonrefundable but is applied toward the course fee. Deadline for registration is May 13, 2016. This action-packed camp will allow your child to experience Camp Bruins for one week. The Offensive Line/Defensive Line camp is designed for young men interested in developing their skills in the fundamentals of offensive and defensive line play. Players will be taught footwork in the run game, footwork in pass protection, hand placement, pass rush techniques, and many more basic skills needed to be an offensive or defensive lineman. This camp is designed for young men interested in polishing their skills in the fundamentals of quarterback and wide receiver play. Wide receivers will be taught the fundamentals of stance and starts, route running, getting in and out of breaks, and ball skill development. Quarterbacks will be taught the fundamentals of throwing mechanics, footwork in drops, pocket drills, how to read basic concepts in the passing game, and how to recognize defensive coverages. Running CampGrades: Rising 6th-8th • Price: $105Time: (Monday-Friday) 8 to 10 a.m. Instructor: Middle School Cross Country Coach Lisa EvansLocation: Upper School Track

Campers will be exposed to various fundamentals of running each day, including trail running, speed training, and hill workouts. This camp will also focus on injury prevention, strength and core training, yoga, and sports nutrition. Several guest trainers will visit during the week. Students will learn the basic, but critical, terminology that is regularly used in theater. Campers will perform daily theatrical exercises that will help prepare them for when they are on stage. They will also work on a one-act play that will be performed for family and friends on Friday, July 1 at 7 p.m. in the Blankenship Theatre. This camp will provide a great opportunity to keep your kids ACTIVE during the summer. Campers can expect to have fun while working out! The camp will also introduce kids to games and workouts that focus on proper posture, mobility, speed, agility, and strength that is great for building any young athlete’s fitness base. Coach Nick Stamper is a certified and highly qualified performance coach that works with athletes from Little League to the professional level. Little Bruins TOT Basketball Grades: Ages 3 to rising K • Price: $105 Times: (Monday-Friday) 9 to 10:30 a.m. Instructor: Mary-Elizabeth Moore Christenson Location: Meet in the Lower School front foyer.

This fun, action-packed camp will focus on ball handling, dribbling, and games that enhance fine motor skills and agility. During the “brain train” section, kids will incorporate arts and crafts while moving through the world of dinosaurs. For more information, contact Mrs. Christenson at [email protected].

Algebra Boot CampGrades: Rising 8th-9th • Price: $155Time: (Monday-Friday) 1 to 3 p.m.Instructor: Middle School Honors Math Teacher Bryce KingLocation: Bryce King’s classroom

This camp is all algebra, all week long. Mr. King will focus on the fundamentals. It is the perfect course for students who would like to get a head start on their fall mathematics course or who need additional reinforcement on the algebra section of the ACT. CodeCombatGrades: Rising 4th-6th • Price: $155Time: (Monday-Friday) 1 to 3 p.m.Instructor: Lower School Technology Teacher Heidi McDanielLocation: Lower School computer lab

CodeCombat is an online course that teaches computer coding using two coding languages, Python and JavaScript. Campers will move through different levels solving puzzles and winning battles while writing code. Students must have an email address set up by their parent before the first day of camp. Little Bruins Music CampGrades: Ages 3 to Rising K • Price: $105Time: (Monday-Friday) 9 to 10:30 a.m.Instructor: Lauren RiceLocation: Meet in the Lower School front foyer.

This camp will be a fun week of music and movement activities for our youngest Bruins. Campers will be introduced to many types of music and hopefully will develop an appreciation that will last a lifetime. Instructor Lauren Rice has served as an assistant voice coach at Studio on Main in Friendship. She also taught music classes at Camp Bruins in 2015. This course teaches MIT’s Scratch programming language, which allows you to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. For more information, contact Mrs. McDaniel at [email protected].

Little Bruins Dance Camp is a great way for your child to exert some energy while having fun. Instructor Erica Davidson will teach campers some of the basic dance steps while they groove to upbeat and educational songs.
