Instructional Goal

Upon using Stixy teachers at this Brownsville ISD campus, and throughout the district, will learn

how to post notes, photos, appointments, files, documents, and insert links to a webpage onto

their Stixy board. The teachers will also be able to know how to change the font style, color, and

size. Teachers will also learn how edit their photos. The teachers will then be able to share with

their students, faculty, and parents.

Learner Analysis

Pre-requisite Skills

To successfully complete this IU, each participant must be able to access the internet from any

place internet is available. They should be able to access either the district website or their

campus website. Every participant must have some basic computer knowledge and know basic

computer vocabulary. Participants must be able to navigate the internet.

Prior Knowledge of Instructional Topic

Teachers on this campus should be know and be able to access the website they will be trained

on. The teachers should have a basic understanding of how to access the internet and locate any

website requested.

Attitude towards Content and Delivery System

Participants were very receptive to the instructional unit. They were ready to learn more about it

and how they could use it in their classroom.

Learner Motivation

Participants will be highly motivated to learn about a new Web 2.0 tool to help them make

learning fun and creative. Of course participants must be understandable of the ups and downs

of technology.

Educational Background and Ability

All participants have a school issued laptop or will use their own personal laptop. The

participants either hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or are in the process of obtaining

Page 3: Using Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unitgsalas.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/58763175/Project 1.pdfUsing Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unit by Georgina

their master’s degree. As the participants proceed through the instructional unit there will be a

trainer or TST person available to help them go through the process.

Learners’ Preferences and Learning Styles

The participants learning styles vary across the board. Some prefer to learn visually with step by

step instructions. Others prefer to learn with a video and written down steps. Others prefer to

learn with written down steps of the whole process. Finally, others prefer someone to show them

the process step by step.

Attitudes Towards Management

Participants have a good attitude towards this new educational tool. They understand that new

material introduced to them should be used in the classroom to make learning fun. They also

understand they will need to complete an anticipation guide before and after the training. They

will also have to complete the check list at the end of the training to make sure they understood

and were able to complete the steps of the training.

Group Characteristics

On this campus the participants will include teachers in grades 1-5, special programs teachers,

paraprofessionals, special education, and technology teacher. There are 10 male teachers, and 33

female teachers. The majority of the teachers are Hispanic with about 3 white female teachers.

The range of teacher’s age would be from 23-60 years old.

Design / Development Risk

This instructional unit assumes the participants have some moderate level of computer skills.

This unit will show a different and new way of creating lessons in the classroom. This unit may

leave out small details that the designer has inadvertently left out because h/she feels or assumes

it is prior knowledge that the participant must have in order to proceed with some of the steps.

Context Analysis

The instructional unit will be available on the district and school website. The learning context

and performance context will be happening in the same place during this training. For this unit

Page 4: Using Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unitgsalas.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/58763175/Project 1.pdfUsing Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unit by Georgina

the training will occur at the campus level during one of the teacher in-services in the beginning

of the school year. In order to make sure everyone gets the same training the training will take

place in the cafeteria where there is wireless internet available. The teachers will be using their

own school issued laptops during this training. There are two constraints that could possibly be a

problem. One would be the wireless internet is down or very slow and the battery runs out from

the laptops. The campus would need to provide power surgers so the laptops could be plugged in

so the battery does not run out. The training program will be available on the school website if

any teachers need to go back and do a retraining refresher. Teachers can also contact the

technology teacher or the teacher in charge if there are any questions about the program.

Performance Objectives

1. Using the Stixy program the teachers will create and log into their own account without any

errors.

2. Given access to a computer with Internet access the teachers will navigate to the Stixy

website (B) without any assistance or errors (CR).

3. From the Stixy home page the teachers will register for a new account without any assistance

or errors.

4. From the Stixy home page the teachers will click “sign in” without assistance or errors.

5. Upon completion of this instructional unit the teachers will create fun and creative bulletin

boards to save and share with faculty, staff, parents, and students without any errors.

Assessment Strategies

The following chart corresponds with the performance objectives from above. Participants will

complete a self check list of their training and submit it to the trainer in charge.

Instructional Strategies

According to Gagne, learning is comprised of a nine step process. The instructional strategies in

this instructional unit are based on Gagne's model.

Pre-Instructional Activities

A brief one–two minute vodcast using a talking avatar through Blabberize will be created to

introduce this instructional unit to the learners. Blabberize allows you to create a talking avatar.

This video will be led by “Winnie” who will provide a light hearted introduction to the training.

By listening to this vodcast, the learner will understand why this instructional unit is relevant to

their position, and will be more motivated to focus their attention on completing the training.

To ignite prior knowledge and skills the teachers will complete an anticipation guide. This guide

is a series of 15 questions which the teachers will respond to by placing a check mark in the

space if they agree with the statement. The anticipation guide is designed to give them

confidence about the material that is coming up, by showing them that they already know a little

about the topic. The first three questions pertain to entry level skills. If the teachers do not agree

with those statements, then the instructional unit should not get started until those skills are

Page 6: Using Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unitgsalas.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/58763175/Project 1.pdfUsing Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unit by Georgina

obtained. This anticipation guide will be referenced again at the end of the instructional unit.

The intent is for the teachers to notice growth as a result of the instructional unit.

Content Presentation

The training guide and all supplemental materials will be delivered electronically to the district

and campus technologists. Then it will be delivered to the teacher in charge of this instructional

unit training. The training guide can be opened through the districts website. Each campus will

also be able to link the training on their school website. The training guide will link to

supplemental media such as anticipation guide, screencast, and a diagram. The teachers will be

able to access the training documents anytime and anywhere they have internet access. The

teachers will also have the option of printing the training document if it is their better way of

learning. The training guide is going to include some light humor to keep the learner engaged,

such as a dialogue from “Winnie” the Stixy bear guide.

Page 7: Using Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unitgsalas.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/58763175/Project 1.pdfUsing Web 2.0 Tool Stixy in the Classroom Instructional Unit by Georgina

The training will be broken down into steps with an evaluation of each step as they go along the

training. Teachers will not be able to move onto the next step of the training until they are

comfortable with the previous step. There will be examples of how the teachers can go about

meeting their objectives.

As the teachers complete the training the trainer will have the training guide and a quick

reference flowchart diagram. The flowchart diagram will show the flow of the Stixy registration

process and how to use the program. This one page visual document will serve as support for the

skills the teachers learned in this instructional unit training.

Learner Participation

As mentioned before, throughout the content there will be application questions embedded into

the training guide. The questions will give the learners an opportunity to apply the skills read in

a particular section of the training. The learners will be provided with feedback for all the

questions including the correct answer and an explanation. Interactivity will be included in the

screencast of Stixy. During the video the learner will have to respond to questions correctly

before moving on to the next section. When combined, all the learner participation described

will provide adequate opportunity to practice the instructional objective before advancing to the

culminating assessment.

1. Turn on computer and access the internet

2. Locating address bar

3. Typing in Stixy address in address bar

The materials and prerequisite skills needed to complete this training will be assessed with a

survey that will be emailed to all the teachers at the respective campuses a week prior to the

training. According to the data collected from the teacher’s surveys the trainings layout could be

modified. The teachers that do not possess the prerequisite skills there will be a quick, small

training in the computer lab on day after school days before the instructional unit training. This

side training, with screenshots, will also be available on the campus website for those teachers

who need a refresher right before the instructional unit training.

Once all teachers are on track and they go through the training there will be an assessment after

each step is performed to make sure they know how to maneuver through that part of the

training. At the end of the training there will be an overall assessment to complete.

Follow-Through Activities

The learners are not required to memorize all the steps in the training. The trainer will help the

learners remember the training and show them how to apply it to the “real world.” To promote

the learner’s memory skills of the process of Stixy they will be provided with a printable

flowchart. Memorization of the skills is not critical as long as they utilize the flowchart to aid

them throughout the process. The flowchart will be accessible at any time to the teachers

especially if they need it to refresh their memory from the training. They can use the flowchart

until they feel confident of their ability to use the Stixy program on their own.
