USING THE HORIZON REPORT TO PREPARE FOR

NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Page 2: Using the Horizon Report to Prepare for New Technologies

Understand how the Horizon Report can be used to plan for effective technology adoption.

Identify resources and models (shared through the annual Horizon Report) that can promote effective technology integration.

OBJECTIVES

When Alice in Wonderland was trying to decide which way to go during her travels, she asked the Cheshire Cat,

If you don’t care where you are going, then it really doesn't’t

matter which choice you make. However, if you do care where you are going and if you know where that is, then it not only makes a

difference which way you go, but it makes it easier for you to decide.

Page 9: Using the Horizon Report to Prepare for New Technologies

Deciding which way to go requires first that you decide where you want to go to.

WHICH WAY?

Page 10: Using the Horizon Report to Prepare for New Technologies

1. Education paradigms are shifting to include online learning, hybrid learning, and collaborative models.

2. Citizen science projects increasingly provide formal students and lifelong learners the opportunity to participate and learn in real STEM projects.

3. As the abundance of the resources and relationships are more easily accessible via the Internet, we are continuously challenged to revisit our roles as educators.

4. Increasingly, students want to use their own technology for learning.

5. From rapid prototyping with 3D printers to building simple circuits and robots, “Making” is now more affordable and accessible than ever.

HORIZON TOP 10 TECHNOLOGY DRIVERS

6. Cloud-based tools are enabling rapid innovation across educational environments.

7. Computer-based assessment and feedback, along with ICT support for personalization, are becoming increasingly important.

8. Openness-concepts like open content, open data, and open resources, along with notions of transparency and easy access to data and information-is becoming more valuable.

9. People expect to be able to work, learn, and study whenever and wherever they want.

10. Massive open online courses are being widely explored as alternatives and supplements to traditional university courses, especially in STEM+ disciplines.

HORIZON TOP 10 TECHNOLOGY DRIVERS

Tablets, smartphones, and mobile apps have become too capable, too ubiquitous, and too useful to ignore, and their distribution defies traditional patterns of adoption, both by consumers, where even economically disadvantaged families find ways to make use of mobile technology, and in schools, where the tide of opinion has dramatically shifted when it comes to mobiles in schools.

Use the Horizon Report or Wiki Page to:

1. Find a technology trend you want to learn more about that could benefit your school.2. Find a school that is effectively using a

technology from the models in the Horizon Report.

3. Share one or both of these resources with others (especially technology decision makers).
