Using SecureFX

What is SecureFX? SecureFX is a PC application that makes secure file transfers (SFTP) easy. Accessing SecureFX:

• A fully functional 30 day trial version of SecureFX is available at: https://secure.vandyke.com/vandykebin/download_form.cgi?PRODUCT=SecureFX

• The computer labs at 53 Church St, the Grossman Library, and the Science Center all have SecureFX installed on their PCs.

Using SecureFX: On the PCs in the labs, SecureFX can be found off of the “Start” menu in “Programs”. The Interface: SecureFX initially opens up a dialogue box (shown below) that displays the contents of the local machine that you’re working on.

Connecting: To connect to a remote machine, go to the menu bar and choose “File” à “Connect” as shown below.

If you’re at a Harvard computer lab, SecureFX may already be configured to connect to the fas.harvard.edu server. If so, the hostname will be highlighted (as shown in the screenshot below). Click the “Connect” button and enter your username and password when cued. If the hostname is not shown see “Creating a New Session” below.

After you connect to fas.harvard.edu and enter your username and password, a new dialogue box will pop open that shows the contents and file permissions of the remote machine that you’ve connected to (shown below).

Accessing Files: To open a folder, double-click on it.

Downloading: To download a file or folder, right click on it and choose “Download” (shown below).

The path to the desktop on your home computer will generally be “C:\Windows\Desktop”. To find the path to the desktop on a lab machine, right on the desktop of the local machine and choose “New” à “Folder” (shown below).

Then right click on the new folder and choose “Properties”. The location to the desktop is show (see below).

Double-click on the appropriate folders according to the path until you reach the desktop. The file will now download directly to the desktop of the local machine.

To upload files, simply drag and drop them: click on the file on the local machine, drag it over the remote session dialogue box, and let go (as shown below).

Creating a New Session: If the hostname doesn’t appear automatically, you’ll need to create a new session. To do so, click on the second icon from the left on the menu bar of the dialogue box that pops up when you open the application (shown below).

A dialogue box will open. Choose “SFTP” as the protocol from the choices on the pull-down menu and click “Next”. Then type in the hostname (as shown below).

Click “Next” and unclick “Anonymous Login”. Type in your username and password as cued. You have the option to go directly to the folder that you want to access by typing its name when you’re cued for the “Initial Directory”. You can also leave the space blank (shown below).

Click on the “Finish” button. Then click on the “Connect” button to open the connection to the remote machine. Follow the directions above for uploading and downloading files.
