Many words are made by putting two smaller words together. These

two words written as one word is called compound word.

Some compound words are easy to figure out. An example is the

word cookbook, from the two smaller words cook and book. It means a

    book for cooking.

    cook + book = cookbook

However, some compound nouns such as launching pad are written as

separate words. Although these compounds are written as two words, they are

used together as a unit. Some compounds such as brother-in-law, are written in

with a hyphen (-) or hyphens to connect the words.

What two words make up each compound word?

    1. Gunpoint ________________ and _________________

    2. Highway ________________ and _________________3. Motorcycle ________________ and _________________

    4. Plainclothes ________________ and _________________

Study carefully statements A and B. Take note of what happens to the underlined

word. How is it changed to a compound word?

    A. Darlene was always asleep by the middle of the night.

    B. Darlene was always asleep by midnight.

For sure you knew a lot already about nouns. Some nouns are called

singular nouns because they denote only one thing, person, place etc. Other

nouns are considered plural in number because they refer to more than one

thing. The same is true with compound nouns.

    Study these:

    Remember:

    1. In forming the plural of compound nouns, make the most

important word plural except for one-word compound nouns

which always take reference to the last word in forming their

    plural.

    2. Follow the rules in forming plural nouns.

Ex. Most nouns ending in f form their plural by changing F to v

    and adding -es.
