WHAT IS A NONMETAL ?

Non-metals are the elements in groups 14-16 of the periodic table. Non-metals are not able to conduct electricity or heat very well. As opposed to metals,non-metallic elementsare verybrittle, and cannot be rolled into wires or pounded into sheets.

NAMES OF THE NON-METALS

Seventeen elements are generally classified asnonmetals. Most are gases (hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, chlorine, argon, krypton, xenon and radon).

One is a liquid (bromine),And a few are solids (carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, and iodine)

USES OF NON-METALS

Hydrogen is the lightest element and can be used as a lifting agent in balloons. Since Hydrogen gas is highly flammable, it can be dangerous to use. But this property and others make Hydrogen suitable for use as a fuel.

Helium is used widely in all kinds of scientific research where the inert gas is made use of for specific environmentHelium is used by meteorology department for weather balloons.

Nitrogenused in industries for the production of ammonia which is an important ingredient of fertilizers we use in agricultural fields.

Oxygen is used for breathing.

Fluorine is used in refrigeration, air conditioning & insecticideFluorine is used to enhance rocket fuel.Fluorine is also used to make TeflonFluorine is used in toothpaste to prevent tooth decay.

Noble gases like argon, xenon etc. are used in all kinds of colourful displays where glowing signs are utilised for advertisement purposes.Light bulbs filled with neon, argon, krypton are also made use of for producing laser beams. The krypton, neon gases are used in filling night club bulbs to provide sparkling coloured bulbs for theatre and night clubs.

Radonwas usedin some hospitals to treat tumours by sealing the gas in minute tubes, and implanting these into the tumour, treating the disease .

Chlorine is used for purifying water.

Bromine is used in dyes and pesticides.

Carbon is used as a fuel.

Phosphorous is used in crackers.

Sulfur utilized in the creation of sulfuric acid. It is used in the creation of steel and rubber. It is also included in the production of inorganic chemicals, matches, fumigants and glass.

Seleniumis not produced in the body, but it is needed for proper thyroid and immune system function.Seleniumisusedto treat or preventseleniumdeficiency.

Iodine is used widely as an antiseptic which prevents the growth of microorganism and used mainly to clean cuts and wounds.Iodine is also used for making anti-bacterial gurgles which helps in preventing throat infection
