    7. The ArchitectureBitDefender Enterprise Manageris divided into several parts: BitDefender Server,BitDefender Local Manager, BitDefender Management Console, BitDefender Deploy-ment Tool and BitDefender Update Server.

    7.1. BitDefender ServerIt is the most important BitDefender Enterprise Managercomponent and its purposeis to manage the information received from workstations, assign and maintain differentsecurity tasks such as:

    install/uninstall the antivirus product; antivirus scanning; scheduled scanning;

    update virus definitions database; remotely change the security options of the BitDefender products installed onworkstations;

    generate detailed reports and statistics.

    This component can be considered the "brain" of the product. The tasks received fromthe user through the management console are forwarded to the workstations in orderto be executed, while the information received from the workstations is processed bythe server. The information is then forwarded to the management console where itcan be viewed and interpreted by the administrator. The server can be dynamically

    extended to perform various other security-related tasks that the customers may need.The server can be password protected. The password can be set in the managementconsole.

    Note

    To manage the BitDefender clients from a different workstation than the BitDefenderServer, you must perform a custom installation of BitDefender Enterprise Manager.When reaching the third installation step click Custom and in the window that appearsdisable all components other than BitDefender Enterprise Management Console andBitDefender Deployment Tool.

    7.2. BitDefender Local ManagerThis component is installed on each workstation which the administrator may want toadminister through BitDefender Enterprise Manager. Through this component, theBitDefender Server communicates with the workstations within the network and it as-signs different tasks to the BitDefender products installed on them. This componentmaintains a local database containing information on each BitDefender product installedon that workstation.

    7.2.1. System Requirements

    Processor- Intel Pentium Compatible processor Minimum hard disk space - 10MB Minimum RAM Memory - 32MB Operating system - minimum Windows 98 SE

    7.3. BitDefender Management ConsoleThis component represents the graphic user interface (GUI) especially created to allowcommunication between the user and the BitDefender Server. From the user's point

    of view, the management console helps you to:

    Easily administer the workstations, by organizing them into workgroups; Remotely install the BitDefender products; Assign new tasks to the BitDefender products installed on workstations; Set the tasks so that they may be executed on one workstation only, on groups or

    on all workstations within the network; Schedule tasks, such as: scanning, virus definitions update and protection options

    configuration;

    To install only the management console on a workstation you must perform a custominstallation of the BitDefender Enterprise Manager. When reaching the third installationstep, click Custom and in the window that appears disable all components other thanthe BitDefender Enterprise Management Console.

    Important

    If you do not want to install the BitDefender Management Console on your system,but still wish to gain access to the BitDefender Server, you can use the Terminal Ser-vices Console (Remote Desktop Connection) to connect to the workstation that hasinstalled the BitDefender Management Console and then work normally.

    Note

    You may install several management consoles in a network. However it is strongly advisedthat only one management console should be connected to the BitDefender server at acertain moment. Otherwise, multiple connections to the same server may compromise

    the functionality of the management console.

    7.4. BitDefender Deployment ToolThis is a independent component. It allows for the remote installation of the BitDefend-er Local Manager, supplanting the need to locally install it on each workstation.However, on some operating systems (Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME) thislocal installation is a necessity. In case the remote installation fails, you can create anunattended package that you will have to run on the target computers.
