e have witnessed a historic electoral run and a supremely powerful and unprecedented victory this election season following which there seems to be a fresh charge coursing through the veins of the entire nation. Buoyed by the anticipation of key policy changes to boost fiscal augmentation, Corporate India is largely believed to be on the very cusp of a new era heralding fresh avenues and delivering long standing promises of multi faceted employment and a velvet rug. Business segment of the Indian economic machinery, whether pertaining to small, medium sized, or large enterprises, has already started fortifying their investments; hiring activity is seeing a flurry of commotion and outsourcing is running in a frenzied state hardly a month post the new government that has won its newly found laurels riding on the wave of a reinvigoration memo, has taken charge at the centre.

Economy’s Green Shoots

In light of the formulation of a stable government, bolstered by sturdy industrial indicators like a sizeable parlay in automobile sales and merchandise exports, both vital gauges of economic revivification and rise in growth of industrial production to a 13 month high of 3.4% in April 2014 have effectively stirred hopes of a swift fiscal resurgence.

As far as the Narendra Modi led new government is concerned, there is a keen eye out for projects which had been shelved for want of clearing impending consent snags. Such projects are actively being sought out and reworked on a root level so as to remove the tailback and ease up the relentless pressure plaguing the economy and the job front. A green signal for such projects could very well translate to a host of new avenues seeing the light of day.

A vast majority of chief financial officers (CFOs) from across industries strongly advocate forecasts of a reserved to generous expansion in 2014.

Taking into account the emendation on the cards aided by a trend of strong indicators, this fiscal can, in very real terms, be the renaissance trajectory India economy has been seeking all these years. Not only is this a chance to be on the growth track again but to define a flightpath hitherto uncharted. The only thing that needs to be refrained from is being carried away, which considering the emphatic victory that the Modi led NDA has registered, would be irresistibly tempting and irrevocably damaging. Inclusive growth needs to be the mantra that the Govt. needs to pursue so as to feed the economy with a positive emotion, thus far lacking from the government.

outlook

IIP rebounds to 3.4% in AprilThe much famed “Achchhe Din” are finally perceptible in near

future, much to the relief of economists and the general

populace. In a dribble of exhilarating news, IIP, or the Index of

Industrial Production, reportedly showed signs of

recuperation in April following two sequent months of

downturn, coupled with retail inflation finally exhibiting

correction trends in May, as revealed by analysis of two sets

of data released in this concern. Backed by a milieu of robust

exports, this data indicates a speculative yet constructive

fortification of the prevalent economic conditions and

possibly signifies shoring up the invigorated endeavors

instigated by the Narendra Modi led Government towards

stimulation of a upbeat market outlook.

Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on

Thursday showed industrial output growth rising an annual

3.4% in April as against a 1.5% expansion in the year earlier

period.

The reported growth originated in convalescence of

electricity and manufacturing sector in conjunction with a

wanting recovery of the mining sector. The manufacturing

sector, having suffered rigorous brunt of the run of economy

for months on end, finally ascended the charts to an annual

2.6% in April whilst electricity indexed an annual upsurge to

11.9% in April, registering an year on year growth of 4.2%

against April 2013.

Export growth hits 7-month highBringing further good news to the sortie, Indian exports

blazoned a fortification of over 12% to a rally of $28 billion in

May, the steepest in over 7 months, primarily banking on

souped up demand spanning developed markets and in part

on account of slump of the value of rupee against the dollar.

Reduced trade discrepancy, owing to an importunate

plummet in imports, also registered as an abettor for

alleviating gold import restraints ushered last year to mitigate

the disparity.

As indicated by the commerce department data released on

the matter, the month of May proved a rapture for most of the

large export sectors such as engineering goods (22% rise to

$6.1 billion), petroleum products (near 29% increase to $5.9

billion), readymade garments (25% to $1.5 billion) and

pharmaceuticals (10% to $1.4 billion) all which showed a

healthy surge when contrasted with previous performances.

"There is a positive spirit and if this trend continues next

month then I will definitely be saying that there is a revival”,

Rajeev Kher, the Commerce Secretary was noted as saying.

outlookIndia set to return to high growth path, says OECDIndia presents a sanguine image with all probability of

rebounding with a soaring growth on the cards at the same

time as BRIC contemporaries Brazil, China and Russia are

headed to trace a below par growth graph, an OECD report

revealed on Tuesday.

CLIs (composite leading indicators) connote an off course

growth trend for Brazil, China and Russia. Conversely, the

CLI is strongly suggestive of an optimistic turnaround for India

implying a swift correction in growth trends of the nation.

Contrary to the previous two fiscal years wherein India

chronicled a below 5% expansion as a corollary of the global

slackening of economy concomitant with a domestic fiscal

blue period, the growth is largely deemed to reinstitute with a

degree of conviction.

A heartening 87% of Indian Chief Financial Officers (CFOs)

from across an assortment of industries foresee Indian

economy recording reticent to hefty amplification in 2014 in

the light of which they lead the Asian expanse when it comes

to financial outlay and spending plans, report survey findings.

The power hub at New Delhi having received a jolt of

revitalization by virtue of a strong government coming into

existence, growth is widely envisaged to corral a colossal

thrust. Riding in to power on an agenda of vibrant growth, the

Narendra Modi led Government is expected to come out all

guns blazing to resuscitate growth and institutionalize

codicils to reinvigorate infrastructure and manufacturing

sectors as the key industry drivers.

Experts conjecture a marginal traction in growth in 2014 and

2015 brought about by tenacious promulgation and

convalescent global financial structure.

CFOs bullish on growth prospects

World’s the stage for India’s richWorld’s cities are now heavily speckled with Ultra High Net Worth Indians – a group comprising those with a net financial standing of $30 million and above.

Asia is widely anticipated to be the new hub of global financial growth and emerge as the prevalent UHNW region of the world within the coming 20 years. The account is lent weight by the fact that one of every seven ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals in the world — roughly 27,000 out of a total of 200,000 — is now an Indian or a Chinese.

India alone accounted for 175,000 millionaire households, perched at the 15th spot among countries of the world, said a report on wealth of individuals which also stated the total number of millionaire households in the world rose to a staggering 16.3 million last year.

Taking the trends into account, India is slated to become the seventh wealthiest nation by 2018.

(Source: The Times of India, 11 June 2014)

This revival is, in no small measure, being attributed to the

formulation of a new and stable government at the center

which has infused the economy and investors alike with an

affirmative propensity and is driving the upturn of stock

market and underpinning the buttressing of domestic

currency.

The Narendra Modi government has cleared seven big-ticket

investment projects worth Rs 21,000 crore, some of which

have been held up for decades, because of hurdles ranging

from environmental issues to financing problems.

The oldest among them, which has been on the drawing

board for over 30 years, is a 235 kilometre railway line that is

critical to tap Chhattisgarh's second largest iron ore reserves

and ensure the survival of the Bhilai Steel Plant whose

current iron ore sources are expected to run out in a few

years.

"The resolution of long-pending issues for big investment

projects has started in earnest under the new government,

with policy problems facing seven large projects having been

resolved already," said a senior government official aware of

the development.

The finance ministry has helped resolve financing issues

facing three power projects, including the hydropower project

in Sikkim that is 94% complete and was to be commissioned

by this December.

A Rs 5,600-crore 1,050 MW power project in Odisha, being

developed by KVK Nilachal Power, also had financing

troubles due to implementation delays. A consortium of

lenders has agreed to treat its loans as 'standard assets' by

adjusting overdue interest from its undisbursed term loan.

Another Rs 1,256 crore project mooted by Essar Power to re-

start its 1,015 MW gas-based plants in Gujarat's Hazira has

also been expedited with a state environmental appraisal

committee being formed.

In addition, the government is also monitoring the progress

of projects that were approved by the previous regime.

Between January 2013 and March 2014, the CCI and the

group under its aegis had resolved problems facing 155

large projects worth Rs. 5.3 lakh crores. The Modi

government has asked developers of these projects to revert

with the status of these investments to ascertain if

production, power generation or delivery of services from

these projects has begun.

Amtek Auto infused nearly Rs 10,800

crore in embellishing its scope traversing

the organic and inorganic course and in

the process, has earned the distinction of

manufacturer of ring gears.

Eicher Motors: Over the past 2 years, Eicher Motors has

diverted a hefty portion of its outlay towards amplification of

capacities for Royal Enfield bikes, further to laying the

groundwork for commercial vehicles.

SAIL registers 11% growth in May sales Having registered a reassuring 11%

growth with sufficient succor from the

improving market sentiment, SAIL

Chairman C S Verma affirmed, “We

fo resee the p resen t t h rus t on

infrastructure growth translate into

higher demand of steel in the country.

This certainly augurs very well for the

industry, and SAIL is geared to meet this

resurgent demand."

The state-run steel maker SAIL posted

an 11% growth rate year on year

registering sales at 1.06 million tonnes

(MT) in May this year. The steel

conglomerate has perceptibly revved

up the ante having surpassed previous

year’s tally of 0.96 MT in the same

month.

“Buoyed by a 76% year on year

strengthening in exports during May,

fabrication at SAIL plant also kept

abreast the tempo with a total hot metal

production of 1.26 MT achieved in May,

a 4% surge from the last year’s figures”,

a statement released by SAIL claimed.

Maintaining a propitious outlook for the

ensuing period of the current fiscal, Mr.

Verma added, “Forecasts are rife with

hope of substantial infrastructure

growth which bodes well for our line of

trade and we, at SAIL, are sufficient

bucked up to meet the demand

cognominated to arise out of this

growth.”

The Jan- March quarter being marred

with a trivial 1.35% fortification of net

proceeds to Rs 452.58 crore and an

overall 20.6 percent growth in net profit

to Rs 2,616 crore in FY14, SAIL

registered production figures of 12.9

million tonnes of saleable steel in FY14,

posting a 4% inflation over the previous

fiscal.

Last fiscal, the Group cemented its

standing and zeroed in on integration,

says Executive Chairman

Stipulated on a GDP growth of 6-7%,

Chennai based Murugappa group

expects to register a yield growth of about

18-21%, reports stated.

“Last fiscal, the Group cemented its standing and zeroed in on

integration”, enunciated A. Vellayan, Executive Chairman of the

group. “Our target is to grow three times the GDP. Given the

current scenario, the GDP is likely to grow at 6-7 per cent and we

have targeted a growth of 18-21 per cent”, Vellayan added.

As 2013-14 drew to a close, the group posted a turnover Rs

24,350 crore, an 8% swell year on year. “The fiscal was

exigent, marred by high inflation and interest rates and

deceleration of the economy, among other factors.

Notwithstanding the taxing environment, however, we have

maintained a steady pace of growth”, Vellayan commented.

He also emphasized on the fact that quite a few group

companies, when paralleled with their peers, have shown

positive tendencies. Last fiscal, the spotlight has been on

assimilation and coalition of acquired companies with major

portion of the attention being routed towards steadying affairs.

“Capex during the last fiscal was also one of the lowest at Rs

166 crore as compared with Rs 1,650 crore, a year ago,” said

Vellayan, who refused to share the plan for 2014-15 stating

they were in the process of preparing Vision 2020 and by

September the plan would be finalized.

From the company’s stance, major developments embraced

merger of Liberty Phosphate and Liberty Urvarak Ltd. with

Coromandel International while merger of Sabero Organics

Gujarat with Coromandel was also initiated following which

operations of Sabero have been effusively revitalized, as

conveyed by Vellayan.

Coromandel entered into a ternary JV with Yanmar & Co of

Japan and Mitsui &Co of Japan to bolster manufacturing and

marketing farm machinery used in paddy cultivation. Thus far,

a 100 of such tackle was deployed across an expanse of

40,000 acres and the upshot has been pleasing as per

company officials with Vellayan disclosing the partners’

scheduled visit next week to effectuate plans for the JV which

include institutionalizing a facility in southern India.

Addressing the press on pecuniary services, NBFC and

indemnity ventures, N Srinivasan, director – Finance of the

Group, added Cholamandalam Investment and Finance and

Chola MS General Insurance recorded a raise of 22% at the

top line, tallying at Rs 5,134 crore and a 25 % growth in

EBITDA at Rs 741 crore. Likewise, NBFC's assets under

management crossed the Rs 25,000-crore mark in March 2014.

Alternatively, the insurance arm of the company saw bankroll

Murugappa Group eyes 21% growthenema of Rs 75 crore leading to a PBT of Rs 102 crore which is

incidentally the first time the 100 crore mark has been touched.

Speaking on the possibility of the need for raising funds for

NBFC arm of the corporation, Srinivasan said, “If the situation

calls for it, we would prioritize amassing funds through private

equity, which has also been deployed for fund raising

activities in the past.”

Divulging his outlook on the way forward, Vellayan

commented, “Given our target of a threefold growth with

respect to the GDP which is slated to grow at 6-7% at the

moment, we are moving full steam ahead with strategic

placement and intensification of endeavors towards

optimizing new acquisitions. A clearly defined objective in

mind will help formulate cogent policies for expansion and

growth which is expected to drive the impetus.”

Taking a stab at market forecast, Vellayan was recorded

saying, “Three factors coursing through the economy which

are certain to impel market improvement are clarity in policy

making, improvement in liquidity and ambulatory consumer

sentiment. These, when put together, will be accountable for

a discernible leeway into a healthier economic environment.

Global biggies line up for Indian bus marketA waning milieu and diminutive revenues has not entirely

deterred investors from delving into the Indian commercial

vehicle market. Despite a dilapidated state of affairs in most

segments, the commercial bus fragment of the market has

been attracting investors’ attention as reported in industry

figures. Global manufacturers of commercial vehicles like

Daimler and Volvo are bracing for a revival in economy

beefing up their cache of market offerings to add in wholly

fabricated buses while new entrants are revving up to make

their way into the segment, bedecking the segment.

Daimler reports the Indian bus market as having an appetite of

400,000 units a year which is expected to grow twofold in the

coming decennium bringing it to the second spot on the ranks,

preceded by China. Daimler India, Indian limb of the German

automobile giant, which was financially perceived to be in

turbulent waters, is due to receive an outlay of Rs 425 crore to

be infused into the bus-making unit in Oragadam near Chennai.

The segment is anticipated to grow at a rapid pace now that the

key trunk byways on the rail network are headed towards surfeit

and dependence on roadways is discernibly on the surge.

in focusDiamond Quadrilateral of high speed trainsIn an attempt to replicate the ascendancy of constructing

superlative highways on Indian soil by the previous BJP Govt.

in power led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi Govt. is looking to

enroot the Diamond Quadrilateral network for high speed

trains.

Ranking high on the Government’s agenda for infrastructure

fortification is refurbishing the rasping Indian Rail Network

which would necessitate a colossal public-private

partnership (PPP) incitement. The Govt. is eyeing

development of Railways as a principal module of the

logistics core which will lend the economy the vital moxie.

Madhavrao Scindia, the erstwhile railway minister, had first

ventilated the notion of high speed trains in mid-1980’s. Till

date, six expanses have been singled out with viability

analysis of Mumbai-Ahmedabad foyer currently afoot. Along

the same lines, former railway minister Lalu Prasad had

vociferously advocated higher movement of milk besides

introducing more refrigerated parcel vans for transportation

of fruits, vegetables and other perishables.

The proclamation comes at a time when the government is

looking to explore the possibility of incorporating FDI in

certain segments viz. high speed corridors in an effort to

defuse the effect of a weak financial standing that has been

maiming all attempts at revival and prelation of Indian

Railways.

valuejunction e-auctions Usha Martin’s power unit in record 3 months

case study

Valuejunction has auctioned Usha Martin’s 3.25-MW captive

power plant in record three months of receiving the mandate.

In 2013, Usha Martin decided to sell its 3.25-MW captive

power plant at Jamshedpur. It was unable to achieve the

desired and expected price using the traditional method.

To get a better price realisation and value for the power plant,

Usha Martin approached valuejunction in September 2013 to

sell the unit because of the latter’s proven expertise in

realising the best value out of surplus and obsolete inventory

and assets.

With a mandate to achieve a price higher than that achieved

via the traditional mode, valuejunction worked on a

customised strategy to ensure competitive bidding. It first

carried out a detailed inspection of the power

plant and all its equipment and machinery

and decided to sell the power plant as an

asset. It began a search for buyers who would

re-use most equipment as re-usable and re-

furbished equipment. This would fetch a

better price in the market as compared to the

price the equipment would command if sold

as scrap.

Only bidders verified by valuejunction were

allowed to take part in the auction which was

held online on the valuejunction portal. A two-

stage auction strategy – seal bid followed by

forward auction – was carried out. To ensure

competitive bidding to achieve a good price

realisation, the bidder with the lowest seal bid

was eliminated after the seal bid.

valuejunction was able to successfully

complete the mandate. It auctioned Usha

Martin’s 3.25-MW captive power plant in

record three months of receiving the

mandate, thus monetising the idle captive

power plant for Usha Martin Group and

ensuring a happy and satisfied client. A price

of INR 66.51 lakh, which was 10.85 percent

higher than the scrap price, was achieved.

Because of its proved expertise, valuejunction

was also approached by West Bengal Power

Development Corporation Limited to assist

them in selling its d De-commissioned 4x120

MW Power Plant in Santaldih, Purulia District, West Bengal.

The esale is scheduled to take place in August 2014.

spotlightIndia Needs FDI in Manufacturing to Push Both Jobs & GrowthIndia is perched right at the doorstep of an epoch of much anticipated and vital growth which is slated to spur a flurry of new job avenues and affluence to the millions of Indian men and women tarrying for a period of extended development, but the opportunity will only present its full face once we learn to capitalize on the manufacturing sector and actualize the latent potency in its entirety.

Coming together of the entire country for the auspices of a stable government in prescience of an economic turnaround has suffused people with newfound buoyancy that is almost proving infectious. Spilling over the confines of geographic and political borders, this optimism has resulted in hitherto unseen attention from global clients of consequence; clients who have the finances, who can stomach the risks associated with a developing market and who are keen on being a part of the economic resurgence of the country. All that is left for us Indians is to present the right idea and the apt opportunity in a congenial milieu.

R i d i n g o n t h e w a v e o f s u c h investments, Indian manufacturing sector could easily chart a path of resumption that promises to stimulate employment generation, augment expor ts , b race the pecun iary standings and entice hefty foreign inves tment in jec t ion in to the economy.

If optimized with the right outlook and the precise approach, manufacturing is estimated to account for about one fourth of the GDP, growing from its current contribution of under 15 %. It is, however, still a distant dream as it would call for sizeable outlay to spawn ample thrust stimulating the desired manufacturing growth; especially in light of the fact that over the past four years, manufacturing has been losing GDP share, expanding just 4%.

Foreign contribution can come in both forms: currency and proficiency. But in order for this to materialize, we have to first lend hospitality to the financial setup of the country. More practices pertaining to making India an investors’ haven need to be put into effect. Currently ebbing towards the bottom end of the World Bank’s 189 nation strong list grading Ease of Doing Business Index at number 134, only marginally better than Ecuador, and not even as inviting as Yemen or Bangladesh, India lies a surprising a 24 rungs below Pakistan.

There is strong need to rectify the vices of bureaucracy. Extensively drawn out, convoluted and archaic modus

operandi adopted for sanctions and environmental clearances must be discounted and replaced with competent procedures. There is also a dire need to fixate on trimming down assets cost and extenuate the taxation system and relevant norms. Attention also needs to be drawn to obsolete labor laws to rope in a work force more enthused and cost efficient and a flexible environment conducive to prosperity.

We also need to get the hardware of development right. Infrastructure and convey costs need to be moderated through an extensive rail, road, port and air connectivity grid. In addition, the power sources need to be regulated in a manner that manufacturers can lay their hands on dependable and vying prices along with land resources with clear titles and so consistent supplies of water so as to remove bottlenecks from the manufacturing processes.

Amplification of the manufacturing sector is the first step to making the economy a well oiled machinery, the benefits of which will course through the economy in its entirety, felt in particularly in the fiscal settings.

The new government’s election manifesto effectively singled out the atypical opportunity proffered by the amalgamation of Indian democracy, demography and demand and the call for bridling all three in concurrence to create the impetus for tenable growth.

The manifesto already addresses the establishment of 100 “smart” cities; a renewed focus on the “five Ts” – talent, tradition, tourism, trade and technology; a network of high-speed trains; doubling the country’s power generation capacity and roads network over the next five years; developing ports and logistic parks; insurance coverage for every individual against accidental death and permanent disability; 1.6 million hectares of land to be irrigated; and creating more than 3 million new jobs in the industrial and service sectors, all of which have a bearing on the ultimate objective; that of fiscal stability.

International patrons are backing Indian financial affluence and they are wagering for a bite of the cookie. All that needs to be done is to foster an environment replete with conditions conducive to trade and commerce in terms of infrastructure, connectivity, skilled manpower and regulatory clearances. If we manage to rack up this trail, we are golden and ready to herald a new era of velvet to India’s resplendent history.

spotlightManufacturing to Get Truckload of Sops from ModiIn a bid to summarily resuscitate the economy, the new Narendra Modi led Government in power is largely anticipated to effectuate multifarious enactments in its first budget which is due to be revealed early next month hoping to revive manufacturing sector, one of the primary contributors to national economy. The steps are likely to create new jobs on the block which could very well put the economy on a renaissance track.

The discussed steps could embrace amendments ranging in effect from affording reprieve to automakers and the consumer durables industry among others, from the confines of the polemical Fiat judgment, aiding the establishment of large provincial manufacturing zones and mend incongruities in the import duty structure.

The Fiat verdict entailed payment of excise duty on the sales to the full extent of the price of the sold entity notwithstanding discounts offered to boost sales. In a statement released by the Govt., an official was quoted as saying, “We have to fortify manufacturing in order for a sturdier growth and more jobs to materialize. The idea behind the anticipated Govt. steps is to foster an environment conducive to this train of thought.

It is fairly imperative for the Modi Government to revivify manufacturing to introduce a modicum of stability into the economy in view of the weight of this sector with regard to creating new avenues and realizing expectations of the general populace.

The sector which contributes a little over 15.2% of the national GDP, diminished by 0.7% in 2013-14 after an elfin expansion of 1% in 2012-13.

The finance ministry approbates the institutionalization of committed regional nuclei for manufacturing, litheness in labor laws and a safety net for workers in conjunction with rationalization of taxes. Discounting correction of inconsistencies, which is obligatory as finished products attract lower duty than inputs in sectors such as durables and chemicals, Government is also planning to put into effect tax measures that would eradicate impediments in the way of production without marring the returns.

The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion,

abbreviated as DIPP, has put forth a draft cabinet note

advocating consent towards up to 100 per cent foreign direct

investment in Defence as a core element of its intent to

augment domestic manufacturing.

The announcement came into the open just two days post

Nirmala Sitharaman taking the reins as the new commerce &

industry minister. Defence Minister Arun Jaitley had indicated

on Tuesday after taking charge of the ministry that he would

consider the issue of FDI in the sector.

The draft note is currently doing rounds of the cabinet for

inter-ministerial remarks as the foremost in what is perceived

to be a sizeable series of reforms expected to be introduced

by the government in order to revitalize manufacturing, the

sector having shown attenuation in output by 0.2 per cent in

the fiscal year ended on March 31, 2014. DIPP is working

round the clock to instigate ideas for amelioration in light of

the new Government assigning top precedence to

manufacturing on its list of agendas for economic revival.

Looking to impel technology transfer, Government is

contemplating three different caps for FDIs in Defence-

DIPP for up to 100% FDI in Defence

barred at 49 per cent, 75 per cent and 100 per cent.

Incidentally, India’s defence capital outlay in 2014-15 is

estimated at nearly Rs. 90,000 crore in the interim budget,

which could be partly met domestically provided higher FDI

proposal meet a positive response.
