February 2016 Volume 35 No. 2Life to the full: Living in the now and not yetToday I felt like the first man who created fire! I finally was successful ingetting my Internet to connect with my printer! I am glad no one was aroundas it sounded like me witnessing Harry Kane scoring the winner for Englandto clinch the next World Cup!I could be on my own but my days seem filled with this type of major drama, followed by a sudden moment of calm when everything is finally back tonormal. Whether it is the shower that has broken, or an earache, or anunforeseen bill, I never feel too far from confusion or unforeseen problems. But is this what life is all about? Boom followed by bust? Problems shouldnot take away our joy when this or even when much worse things come ourway. As a Christian, I am reminded that there is a much better way to be human. In the gospel of John we are reminded that Jesus came to give us spiritualfood to nourish us when we feel empty, a sense of companionship when wefeel isolated and a purpose when we have no sense of meaning. Also we areencouraged to know Jesus as the resurrection; even death is conquered byGod!The 250+ people who attended the funeral of 20 year old Madeleine LeahHardman at St Martin's in January, humbled and challenged me to look forthis 'life to the full' experience, instead of dragging around a sense of rushing.I have not felt closer to God for some time, as hundreds witnessed to me oftheir love in grief, hope in despair and a positive spirit that they will seeMaddy again because of Jesus' resurrection. Her father Colin, mother Susan, and soulmate Aaron, encapsulated to me what it is to live life authenticallyand with passion. We may lose incredibly precious people, but this iscertainly not the end!You know, maybe your printer is still busted, or your bills are spiraling out ofcontrol, or you have lost direction to your life, but deep down in your heart, ifyou are still, if you are silent, you know there is a way out. God is with you.Take heart, this is not the end. You may feel perplexed by society or deeplybroken by the most painful loss you could ever bear. Even then, take heart! As a Christian, I would encourage you to look to Jesus, look to love, look tolife and sure enough, in time, it may be days, it may be weeks, it may beyears, you will in the end rediscover God, your life companion who willcontinue to lead you home.

SHENLEY PARISH COUNCILReport of the January Meeting

The Village had a fantastic end to the year with Santa Claus visiting us twice onthe Sunday before Christmas. He came in the morning on his sleigh completewith reindeer (well, a pony in fancy dress!) and toured the streets of Shenley, thiswas well received with children and adults alike coming out to welcome him. Inthe afternoon he took his usual seat in his grotto (well, The Cage decorated) andspent time with the local children spreading his Christmas cheer. The adultswere entertained with mulled wine and carols sung beautifully by the choir fromSt. Martins Church and we thank them very much for this. The end to the year also saw the mysterious collapse of the bus stop at the topof Black Lion Hill. The council seem to think that it was blown down in the wind.I personally am not convinced, I think that more likely a speeding car took it outand then drove off. In the meanwhile we are exploring the costs of either havingit removed or reinstated. The flooding that results in us having to "puddle dodge" when walking alongLondon Road near the pond and the Village Hall has been investigated andworks orders have been placed to have eight gullies cleared which will solve theproblem. The works in Rectory Lane have been completed which now has createdadditional passing places for traffic and also improved the drainage so the roadshould no longer flood. We have six plant troughs throughout the Village and we are grateful to the fivenew sets of volunteers who have just taken on their upkeep and maintenance. We would like to participate in the "Best Kept Village" competition but decidedthat perhaps we should start off with a slightly smaller project and as such havereintroduced from this year the "Best Kept Garden" competition that will takeplace and be judged in July. If you are interested in participating then pleaseregister your interest with Amanda our Clerk. Entry forms will be available nearerto the judging date. The allotments are now being tidied up at the end of the season and as a resultwe have some plots available. If you fancy yourself as the next Alan Titchmarshthen register your interest with Amanda and she will hopefully be able to allocateyou a plot. Thanks to some very generous donations from villagers we have now orderedour very own defibrillator which will be located outside "The Hub" our Parishoffice next to The Village Hall. We are arranging a training session for its useand if you are interested in being trained on it then please let Amanda know. Ifyou call 999 and it is deemed necessary to use the machine you will be given acode by the operator and some instruction over the telephone.

In order to improve communications and the sharing of information within theVillage we are looking to move with the times (albeit a little late!) on social mediaand so keep a look out for our Facebook page and "like" it. Our website needs arevamp, but at the moment we lack the design and technical skills, as well as thebudget so if anyone has some appropriate skills to volunteer Amanda would bereally grateful to hear from you. We are also really pleased that The Right Honourable Oliver Dowden our MP hasagreed to come and spend the evening with us on Saturday 21st May and will beavailable to answer any questions that you may have. Please put the date in yourdiary and more details will follow in due course. We would love to be able celebrate The Queen's 90th Birthday as a Village andare looking at a "street party" event in the Walled Garden so watch out for moreinformation in due course. It's been a great start to 2016 and I hope that our Village will continue to go fromstrength to strength throughout the year and be a village that we can all be reallyproud of.

SHENLEY WOMEN’S INSTITUTEOur year got off to a good start when Yvonne and Fred Perry took us with

them on a photographic trip to London. When one thinks of London, a picturecomes to mind of say.......Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, OxfordStreet......thick traffic and buses, buses. However, there is much more to thisgreat city than that! But you need to dig deeper, do a bit of research andmake a number of journeys there with your camera at the ready. As a resultof Yvonne and Fred doing this, we were able to sit and enjoy some lesserknown London sights.

Through centuries, London has been the centre of commerce with theThames playing an important part, of course. We were able to go inside andsee the interiors of some of the important centres e.g. the Drapers' Hall, with alovely garden surrounding it, in a quiet corner of London. We saw St.Bartholomew's Church and hospital, the oldest in the city of London, as wellas the Apothecaries Hall with a display of some of the old instruments used, all taking us way back into the history of our country.

We were reminded too of the terrible bombing London suffered during thewar and the extensive damage done. We saw the wonderful picture of St.Paul's rising defiantly through the smoke. There is so much to see and learnabout this lovely city and its long, long history and we thank Yvonne and Fredfor all their work and dedication in recording it for us to enjoy.

After our cuppa and lovely, lovely cakes, we listened to the short-listedeight resolutions before deciding which one to be taken forward for discussionand voting on at the AGM in June. Successful Resolutions become the basisfor campaigns that sometimes make a difference. Shenley voted for 'Betterfunding and respect be provided for people with poor mental health problems'

The completion was for a 'Thank You letter for an unwanted gift'. Entrieswill be judged during the month and the winner announced next month.Flower of the month was a sprig of flowering cherry (in January!!) brought byJean Hoggett.

In February, Peter Parry is coming to tell us about 'Men in sheds'(REMAP), and the competition is for an 'Old hand tool'.

SHENLEY PARK TRUSTWell done to all those that came, got thoroughly drenched andfrozen, but left happy after Wassailing on 9th January. Back atthe Chapel, we enjoyed apple and parsnip soup made by theOrchard Tea Room, wonderful Wassail cake and a new recipe

of warm spiced apple juice that went down well. For those with new diariesthat have January 2017 at the back, our Wassail next year will be Saturday7th January. We are busy preparing for a great summer ahead that will hopefully be dry!At Easter, the Orchard Tea Room is organising an Easter egg hunt for EasterMonday, so look out for notices around the Park nearer the time. The EasterSunrise Service is going ahead this year (Easter Sunday) with breakfast at theTea Room afterwards. In the meantime, don't be too put off by the mud, come down and keep youreyes peeled for a spring display of daffodils, bluebells, anenomes and crocusthat have been planted by Thursday morning volunteers, Oaklands Collegestudents, park staff, and by volunteers on Mitzvah Day If you would like to join in with the volunteering at the Park, there is theThursday morning group that meets every Thursday from 9.30-12.30, the firstThursday of the month with Park Staff, or weekend volunteering throughoutthe year, with notices of these dates placed around the Park. ACS - Action for a Cleaner ShenleyThe New Year has started well for ACS. The first ACS session took place onMonday 4th January and thankfully it was well attended. We managed to splitinto a couple of groups and do two good pieces of work. One team startedworking on widening the footpath in Harris Lane Playing field. It is a long timesince the path was installed and gradually the grass has been encroachingsuch that now only a very narrow pathway remains, about 9 inches wide, some parts even smaller!! A section from the Play Area to the end of thePavilion was cleared. Many thanks Ross and Guy. We are hoping there maybe some good news to report soon as to how the rest of the job is going to becompleted! The other team carried on clearing the footpath running along the main roadinto Shenley from the London Colney Roundabout. We are currently workingon the section opposite Clore Shalom school, which is particularly bad. Thefootpath is well used and every time we work villagers walk, run or ride pastus appreciating what is being done. A nurse who works in the local nursinghome was one of the people we spoke to during our session on 4th January. She has to walk along the path every day going to work! Two new peoplecame along to help and a long section was widened. Many thanks to Paul,Nigel and Caroline.I also want to thank Yasmin Cohen, who is doing her Duke of EdinburghBronze award and has been working at the weekends with me for an hour or

two. She did a session just afterChristmas and on Saturday 2ndJanuary. In fact on 2nd JanuaryYasmin's dad came along, manythanks Lew, and we cleared a goodsection of the footpath near ChloreShalom school. The next Action for a CleanerShenley Session will be on Monday1st February 1.30 - 3.30pm. Meetat the Hub at 1.15pm or call Nickyon 07976 872668 to find out wherethe ACS team are working. Anyhelp you can give will be muchappreciated. If you would like tohelp at the weekends, please callNicky to see if she is running a ses-sion that weekend. There is often aone hour session on Saturday orSunday. Cllr Nicky Beaton
