    Use the IntegratedVirtualization Manager with

Linux on POWERThe IBM Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) is a new componentof the Virtual I/O Server, which is included with the Advanced PowerVirtualization feature. With the use of IVM, customers can now managepartitions on an IBM POWER5 server without a HardwareManagement Console (HMC). This paper presents an overview of thefunctionality of IVM, lists some of the differences between the IVM andthe HMC, and illustrates how to use IVM to create and manage Linuxon POWER partitions.

    Introduction

With IBM POWER5 and POWER5+ processor-based systems andAdvanced POWER Virtualization (APV), there are many opportunitiesfor consolidation and simplification of the IT environment. Multiplesolutions can be created that take advantage of the benefits from theapplication of virtualization. Some examples of solutions that benefitby utilizing virtualization are:

    Server consolidation

    Rapid deployment

Application development and testing Support for multiple operating system environments

The Advanced POWER Virtualization hardware feature includessoftware, firmware, and hardware enablement, which provide supportfor logical partitioning (LPAR), virtual LAN, and virtual I/O. In addition, servers featuring the POWER5 processor can utilize Micro-Partitioning, which provides the capability to configure up to 10logical partitions per processor.A key component of APV is the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS). The Virtual I/OServer provides sharing of physical resources between partitions,

including virtual SCSI and virtual networking. This allows more efficientutilization of physical resources through sharing between partitionsand helps facilitate server consolidation. To exploit the capabilities of APV, a system management interface isrequired. This function is often provided by a Hardware ManagementConsole (HMC). The HMC is a dedicated workstation that runsintegrated system management software. In some system installations

an HMC may not be required, or for some businesses may not be acost-effective solution. The Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) is a browser-basedmanagement interface that is used to manage a single IBM Systemp5, IBM eServer p5, or IBM OpenPower server. It can be used to

create logical partitions, manage the virtual storage and virtualEthernet, and view service information related to the server. IVMprovides the required system management capabilities to small andmid-sized businesses, as well as larger businesses with distributedenvironments.IVM is provided as part of VIOS, starting with Version 1.2. Thefunctionality of IVM is supported in system firmware level SF235 orlater. When you install VIOS on a supported system that does not havea HMC present or previously installed, IVM is automatically enabled onthat server. Therefore, IVM provides a simplified, cost-effective solutionfor partitioning and virtualization management.

This article illustrates how to set up and use IVM and how to create andwork with Linux partitions.

Thisconfiguration allows thesystem tobe used as

astandaloneserver withall of theresourcesallocated tothe singlepartition.Afteractivatingthe

virtualization feature,an HMC canbe attachedto thesystemsserviceprocessor toconvert theunmanagedsystem into

an HMC-managedsystem. Asan HMC-managedsystem, thesystem canexploitvirtualization, and thesystems

    resourcescan bedividedacrossmultiplelogicalpartitions.When the

    system doesnot have anHMCavailable,an IVM-

managedsystem canbe createdthat can stillutilize thevirtualization and LPARcapabilitiesof thesystem. Toconvert the

unmanagedconfiguration into anIVM-managedsystem, theVIOS isinstalled inthe firstpartition onthe

unmanagedsystem. ThisVIOSpartitionowns all ofthe physicalI/Oresources ofthe system.Clientpartitions
