Jim Hefner, a former USC assistant coach and assistant athletic director, brings considerable on and off the court experience to his job as he enters his 13th year as the analyst on the USC men’s basketball broadcasts. For three years, he was a USC men’s basketball analyst for ON TV in Los Angeles and another four years with Prime Ticket before moving over to radio and the Trojan broadcasts for the 1996-97 season.

Hefner began his association with USC in 1966 as an as-sistant coach to Bob Boyd on the varsity team, and as the head coach of the Trojan freshman team. During the years that Hefner coached (1966-78), USC enjoyed its greatest basketball success, including a 24-2 record and No. 2 ranking in 1971. He was also a tremendous recruiter, bringing in such future college and NBA stars as Paul Westphal, Ron Riley, Mack Calvin and Bill Hewitt. After 13 years as a coach, Hefner moved upstairs in Heritage Hall and became an assistant athletic director. During his 10 years (1979-88) in that position, he oversaw operations for the football, basketball and baseball programs. He starred in basketball in high school, junior college and college. Hefner was a two-time all-league guard at both Alhambra (Calif.) High and Santa Ana (Calif.) Junior College, where Boyd was the head coach. It won’t take long to expose the inadequacy of the English language. There’s the heart-pounding thrill of 306 horses* propelling you from

0 to 60 in an exhilarating 5.6 seconds.*† The surefooted grip on the road as the world is changed into a blur of light and texture. And

then the overwhelming certainty that there are simply no words to describe this moment.

Quiet enough to have a conversation. Fast enough to be rendered speechless.
