6 USA GYMNASTICS JULY . AUGUST 2007

Summer is finally here and so are a 101: of great opportunities to stay involved with gymnastics.

Recently, we launched the premier episode of "USA Gymnastics: Behind the Team," an online series available exclusively on the AT&T blue room Team USA Web site at www.attblueroom.com/teamusa.This series, scheduled to run through August 2008, will give you a behind-the-scenes look at USA Gymnastics' top athletes as they prepare to represent their country on the world stage. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do so, and stay tuned for upcoming episodes.

For USA Gymnastics and many of our member clubs across the country, the summer months mean summer camps and

the Tyson Fitness Challenge. Both provide kids with a fun and safe environment to learn gymnastics skills, and develop a strong foundation for becoming more physically fit. We continue in our drive to raise $1 million for Children's Miracle Network by the end of next year. The Tyson Fitness Challenge is designed to help you and your club support this valuable cause, and "help kids who need help." We have recently made it even easier to donate to Children's Miracle Network by providing on-line donation forms. For more information, go to www.usa-gymnastics.org /tysonfitnesschallenge.

In keeping with the spirit of big international events, the largest gymnastics gathering in the world takes place this July at the World Gymnaestrada in Austria. The Alpine villages along the Rhine Valley are hosting more than 21,000 gymnasts from more than 50 countries for a full week of General Gymnastics performances. This past fall, the FIG renamed this discipline "Gymnastics for All," representing the all-inclusive spirit of this side of the sport. The USA delegation will consist of 400 people representing 10 clubs from across the United States. The USA delegation will also participate in a cooperative project with the Pan American Gymnastics Union (PAGU) when 800 participants join together for a special Closing Ceremony presentation.

Our elite athletes will be competing in the Pan American Games, July 13-29 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, featuring men's, , women's, rhythmic and trampoline competition. And, USA Gymnastics is

ecently, we launched the premier episode of "USA

Gymnastics: Behind the Team," an online series

available exclusively on

once again hosting the Freedom Cup in Palm Springs, Calif., July 20-22, an international acrobatics gymnastics competition. The Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships just took place June 20-28 in Memphis, Tenn. Watch for coverage of these events in the next issue.

In August, the big event will be

the AT&T blue room Team USA Web site at

www.attblueroom.com/teamu ,

the Visa Championships held in San Jose, Calif., for men's, women's, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics. The Visa Championships will take place in conjunction with the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show. The men and women who do well in San Jose will advance to the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, Sept. 1-9. This World Championships is an extremely important one since it serves as the qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Stay updated on all the gymnastics news this summer by logging on to the USA Gymnastics Web site at www.usa-gymnastics.org

Make it a great summer and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Visa Championships and/ or National Congress in San Jose!

Pro per n utritio n fo r you ng at h I etes is not only vital for optimal athletic performance, but also to their growth, development, and overall health. Young gymnasts have unique needs that include adequate caloric intake, hydration, and meal timing, to name a few. A high performance diet will consist of a variety of healthy-choice foods including: whole grains, vegetables, low-fat and lean protein sources, low-fat dairy products, and fruits. Fats and sugars should be consumed infrequently and in small amounts.

Energy Needs Daily caloric intakes for young athletes vary per age and activity level. Athletes involved in moderate-intensity level sports (i.e. golf, softball, baseball) versus higher-intensity level sports (i.e. football, basketball, gymnastics, tennis, soccer) will require more. Energy providing nutrients include carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

Car bo hydrate s Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for physical activity and are found

in nearly all foods that we consume (grains, vegetables, fruits, and dairy) . At least 50-60 percent of a young athlete's total daily caloric intake should come from carbohydrates .

Carbohydrates .Good Choices vs. Bad Choices

GROUP BETTER CHOICE : WORSE CHOICE

Grains Rye bread, Whole wheat White bread, fried breads, bread, Cheerios Sugary cereals

Vegetable Fresh vegetables (fresh or Canned vegetables, fried vegetables frozen), not boiled too hard

Fruit Fresh fruits (fresh or frozen) Canned fruits in heavy syrup

Dairy Non-fat and low-fat milk, Whole milk, fattening cheeses, heavy cheese, and yogurt (low sugar) . creams, yogurt (with syrupy fruits added)

Fats, sugar, snacks Food items prepared in a plant Food items prepared in animal source oil (canola, olive, vegetable), fats, oils, margarine, trans-fats, fru it snacks, organic snacks fr ied snacks

Carbo hyd rat e Cat egories There are two categories of carbohydrates: Simple (fast absorbing) and Complex (slow absorbing). Slow carbs are best for sustained energy and should be the largest component of an athlete's diet. Fast carbs are only appropriate during and immediately after exercise. It is at these times that the body best benefits from foods / drinks that provide quick energy.

Protein Protein is necessary for proper hormone and enzyme production in young children, as well as tissue repair in response to exercise. The needs of protein for active children and young athletes are slightly

First Choice Carbs (low to Moderate) Whole grain breads/rolls, high fiber cereals (not sugary cereals like Fruity Pebbles, etc.), brown or wild rice, pasta, oatmeal, squash, peas, sweet potatoes, corn, baked beans, bananas, grapes, raisins, unsweetened fruit juices

last Choice Carbs (Fast) Pancakes, waffles, crepes, white potatoes, most cereals (check amount of sugar), sports drinks, maple syrup, dates, fi gs, crackers, pretzels, honey, molasses, ketchup, white bread, bagels, rice cakes

higher than that of non-physically active children. Young athletes should have a protein consumption of 20-25 percent of total caloric intake. Protein should come from lean and low-fat animal sources, as well as beans, legumes, and lentils.

Protein Good Choices vs. Bad Choices

GROUP BETTER CHOICE WORSE CHOICE Meats lean cuts, upper quarters ~ Fatty cuts, lower quarters

Poultry White meat Dark meat

Fish Baked ~ Fried

Beans Black Beans, White Beans, . Refried Beans, Navy Beans, fresh or frozen : canned (sodium)

Fats Fat is important for protecting organs, hormone production, providing protection and insulation to various organs of the body, and for supporting vitamin uptake. Fat intake should be approximately 20-30 percent of total caloric intake. Avoid saturated and h'ans fats, especially after being physically active (it slows down the uptake of necessary nutrients). Healthier choice fats include unsaturated fats (think from plant sources versus animal) .

Hydration Dehydration is counterproductive to enhanCing athletic performance. Minor dehydration impairs concentration, coordination, reaction time, and stamina. Children do not tolerate temperature extremes as well as older athletes. Special attention should be placed on making sure young athletes have adequate fluid intake before, during, and after activity. The following are suggestions to help maintain proper hydration: ~ 10-12 (80-96 oz) cups of water a day

~ 12-20 oz before activity

~ 6-12 oz during activity (every 15-20 min.)

~ 2-3 cups for every pound lost after activity

BETTER CHOICE Pure water, low-sugar flavored water, low-sugar or no-sugar added juices, sports drinks (during and after exercise ONLY)

WORSE CHOICE Coffee, tea, soda, alcoholic beverages, egg nog (fattening), milkshakes, beverages with high fructose corn syrup, sugary fruit juices

Competition Snacks What types of food are better choice snacks for on the go, or at competitions? ~ Go-gurt (portable yogurt), or other low-fat yogurt

~ Cottage cheese with fruit, and / or fruit cups

~ Baby carrots, celery

~ Animal crackers

~ Teddy Grahams

~ Fat-free pudding cups

~ String cheese

~ 1 slice whole wheat bread with 1 oz sliced turkey breast and mustard

~ 1/ 2 oz baked tortilla chips with 2 Tbsp salsa

~ Fig Newtons

~ 1/ 2 whole wheat bagel (4" diameter), toasted, with 1 Tbsp sugar-free jam

~ 3-4 cups microwave air-popped popcorn

HE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH PLAYED HOST TO THE 2007 Women's NCAA National Championships, which featured a 12-team field with the top two teams from each NCAA Regional Championship. The University of Georgia not only won its third consecutive team title, but sophomore Courtney Kupets, a 2004 Olympic silver medalist, won the all-around honors for the second straight year and the vault title. Other event finals winners were:

Alabama's Terin Humphrey (2004 Olympic medalist), uneven bars; Utah's Ashley Postell (2002 World Championships medalist), balance beam; and Alabama's Morgan Dennis, floor exercise.

In the team competition, the top three teams from each of the two team preliminary sessions advanced to team finals, also known as the "Super Six." The top four gymnasts (including ties) on each event in each session become First Team All Americans and qualify to individual event finals on Saturday night and the next four finishers become Second Team All Americans. The gymnast with the highest single All-Around score from either session becomes the NCAA National All-Around Champion.

In the first team preliminary session, the two-time defending champion Gym Dogs posted the top score with a 197.700 to edge past top-ranked Florida, which scored a 197.400. Nebraska started the meet with a miss from their very first performer on their first event, but demonstrated why they have become a regular in team finals with a very strong performance through the rest of the afternoon that was four-tenths better than Oklahoma's 196.25 and half a point ahead of Alabama's 196.125.

Stanford came out strong in the evening session with a solid floor effort and a remarkable vault performance, earning a 49.525 that tied Georgia's phenomenal vault effort earlier that day. At the half way point in the session, Stanford held a narrow lead over Utah, 98.700 to 98.625. The other three teams had fallen back, with LSU at a 97.950 (rough start on bars) and Michigan and UCLA both at 97.825, promising a great deal of drama through the last several rotations.

A tremendous bar score of 49.500 pushed the Utes ahead of Stanford after the third event. Things really heated up in the race for the third Super Six slot when a strong UCLA vault squad garnered a 49.425 to leapfrog over LSU and run away from a Michigan team that struggled on beam. Stanford' s 49.300 on beam to finish the meet showed impressive toughness and was the best beam score of the session, but Utah's 49.200 gave them the top spot at the end of the session. UCLA snagged the last qualifying spot at 196.475, just two tenths ahead of LSD. The Utes' 197.325 and Stanford's 197.200 made them the likely challengers to the top two teams from the afternoon session.

The team finals started at a blistering pace with all six teams giving strong performances in the first rotation: Georgia scored 49.425 on bars; Utah was half a tenth back at 49.375 on floor; Florida had a 49.225 on beam; and Stanford scored a 49.225 on vault. The pressure intensified as every team finished their second events, and the Utes and Gym Dogs were tied with 98.75. Florida was only two tenths back and Stanford, UCLA, and Nebraska were stacked up right behind.

A fall on bars forced the Utes to count a 9.65 that suddenly opened the door to a surging Gator squad that turned in an impressive 49.40 on vault to edge

Clockwise from Left: Courtney Kupets; Terin Humphrey; Horgan Dennis; Ashley Postell; and the Georgia Team

past Utah by a tenth at the close of three events. Georgia began to pull away after a remarkable show of strength on floor. Stanford was in fourth with

their second rocked beam rotation in two days. UCLA closed the gap with a strong effort on floor that left them in fifth by just half a tenth.

Nebraska dropped back four-tenths after beam, and the meet looked to be a very tight race for the second to fifth place spots .

All-Around

In the final rotation, Georgia won its third consecutive national championship after recording an unbelievable

49.525 on vault for the second night in a row. Florida finished strong with the second best bar total of the

Super Six, but it was surging Utah who had the top beam performance of the night and passed

Florida for the second spot by .05 with a 197.25. UCLA (196.925), Stanford (196.825)

and Nebraska (195.975) finished fourth through sixth, respectively.

Georgia is the only team to advance to the Super Six every year since the format began in 1993, and no team has won three straight national titles since Utah won five in a row (1982-86). iii

Penn State Wins Men's NCAA Championships Team Title

ENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY, COMPETING ON its home turf in Rec Hall, won an NCAA-record 12th men's gymnastics team title at the 2007 Men's National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships, scoring 221.00 points. Per.n State defeated defending champions Oklahoma who scored a 220.20 while Stanford finished third with a 218.450.

Oklahoma had a 1.6 point lead going into the final rotation, but the Nittany Lions performances on still rings moved them into first place.

Penn State's Head Coach Randy Jepson said, "I am thrilled for our guys. We had a goal at the beginning of the season and they came through with flying colors. They never let down. I am really proud of Matt Cohen and the rest of the group."

When asked if this was one of the highest points in his career, Jepson said, "It is going to be tough to beat. It is a special moment. Winning it in front of the fans and family is huge."

Rounding out the top six teams were Michigan in fourth (218.400), Illinois in fifth (217.300) and Minneso ta in sixth (217.150) .

2006 and 2007 Tyson American Cup Champion Jonathan Horton from Oklahoma said, "The competition was a lot of fw1. I enjoyed it. We didn't win but I was still really proud of the team and how we did."

In the all-around, Oklahoma University's Taqiy AbdullahSimmons won the all-around title with a score of 55.750. The 2006 defending champion Horton and the University of

Illinois' Wesley Haagensen tied for second with a score of 55.00 points, just 0.75 behind Abdullah-Simmons.

Abdullah-Simmons said, "I am very excited about

14 USA GYMNASTICS '-11 AU'loU> ,

winning the all-around. It is always a pleasure to win any competition, let alone the National Championships. It is kind of hard to talk about it because the team always comes first. But winning the all-around is nice to

have in a class of such great people that were ahead of me."

During event finals, Horton took top honors on floor and high bar with a score of 9.650 and 9.675, respectively. California's Tim McNeill also grabbed two event titles on pommel horse and parallel bars with scores of 9.650 and 9.725. Stanford's Alex Schorsch won rings with a score of 9.750. There was a tie on vault between Stanford's David Sender and Ohio State's Pejman EbralUmi, both scoring 9.30.

for top tier performance. Their success is inspirational and we wish them all the best.

TIson FI ness Challenge: Raising funds to help children in need

at FirSt, the bad earaches seemed harmless. But when Whitney Pinson's earaches became worse, her parents, Tracy and Michelle, took her to a doctor who sent her home with antibiotics.

As the earaches persisted, Whitney's doctor decided to do some exploratory surgery because he believed scar tissue might be causing the pain. When he came out after the surgery, the news was grim. "He had a somber face/' Michelle said. "He told us it was a tumor."

In 2004 at age 10, Whitney was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Whitney then underwent chemotherapy treatments every 14 days, with radiation treatments midway through, with the goal of finishing treatment in seven months compared to the standard 12 months.

Whitney's main concern was getting back to gymnastics at North Florida Gymnastics Center

However, just before entering 7th grade, Whitney began having

problems with double vision and headaches while at a volleyball camp. Although an MRI was negative, spinal tap results showed that Ewing's cells were in her spinal fluid. Whitney was once again fighting for her life.

Since learning her cancer had returned in August 2006, Whitney has gone through many chemotherapy treatments and has once again proven to her parents that she is "the strongest person they have ever known." Her progress has been better than doctors expected and after a bone marrow transplant in April 2007, Whitney is currently disease-free. After a long journey and now 13 years old, Whitney is very excited to get back to a normal teenage life. 13
