The 12th green at Lancaster Country Club — and the 1761 Club — can be seen from the walking bridge on the eighth hole. Chartered in1900, LCC is one of Pennsylvania’s oldest private clubs. Noted designer William Flynn set up the course in 1919, then came back to modifyit to take four of the holes over the Conestoga River after the purchase of additional land in 1938. “Lancaster is far and away the most com-plicated architectural evolution of all of William Flynn’s courses,” scholar Wayne Morrison has said of the venue. Flynn wanted limited runoff tee balls, so 14 of the 18 holes have tee shots that hit into upslopes. They can be slight or abrupt, and some punish a poor tee shot withside slopes. On some holes the emphasis is on distance, with a need for long irons, or, on other holes, on placement. Truly, a golfer musthave a wide range of shots to succeed when playing LCC.

Fans cheer for eventual champion Michelle Wie on the 14th hole during the final round of the U.S. Women’s Open golf tournament in Pinehurst, N.C., on June 22, 2014.

If you’re going to be a spectator...

Rule number one: Don’t wear highheels.

You’d think this rule would be as ob-vious for golf spectators as, say, balletdancers or astronauts.

Yet I have never been to a pro golftournament where I didn’t see at leastone person choosing the insouciantchic of an open-toed slingback overrudimentary concerns like mobility

and high-ankle sprains. Watching a golf tournament is

unlike any other sports spectatingexperience. Nowhere else is the linebetween playing field and audience asblurred.

The venue is roughly five squaremiles, large portions of which fans arepermitted to roam freely.

You really will be able, if you hustle,

to stand within an arm’s length ofMichelle Wie while she’s working.

This, by the way, leads to the answerto the question: Why can you screamat a basketball player on the foul linebut not a golfer over a shot?

For the same reason that, duringan NBA game, you can’t stand on the

court. Think a little about the basicnature and structure of the sport.

“Think a little,’’ in fact, is probablythe best general advice.

A lengthy and useful specta-tor guide is available now atwww.2015uswomensopen.com, andwill be available in print form at theevent.

It includes a comprehensive list ofprohibited items — sorry, no ladders, weapons, explosives or fireworks —

but, sadly, no curmudgeonly dissentfrom Supreme Court Justice AntoninScalia.

A quick primerIf you’ve never been before, it goes

like this: Pairing sheets are free andreadily available. They’ll tell youwho’s playing when and include a mapof the course.

Thursday and Friday (before thefield is cut) half the field begins playon the first hole and the other half onthe 10th. There’s a morning wave oftee times and an afternoon wave.

Once you get a general sense ofwhere the players are, you can choose

to follow a player or group, hover around an area wherea lot of golf takes place (seestory on Page 7), set up campin the bleachers and watchgroup after group comethrough, or some combina-tion of the above.

The weather will be ahuge everyday factor in theexperience. Pay attentionto the forecast, and utilizesunscreen, hats, rainwear, umbrellas and sunglasses as

    appropriate.Beyond those broad strokes,

I would suggest the following:1. If you’re more interested

in golf than celebrity, followrank-and-file players. Gettingclose to the stars is too muchwork.

An unusual thing aboutthe LPGA is that some great,

great players aren’t stars. Youmight not know Hyo Joo Kimfrom Lil’ Kim. Here’s a hint:One of them is ranked fourthin the world, and watching

her hit balls is like watchingTed Williams take BP.

    2. Speaking of which, es-pecially if you’re a golfer andeven if you’re not, spend some

time around the practicearea. You can see more shotsthere than anywhere else, and also see the pros interactwith each other (and theircaddies, teachers, hangers-onand perhaps even fans) in amore relaxed setting than thecourse.

    3. Skip the greens. Peopletend to gather around greens, but putting is the least inter-esting thing to watch. Doingit, pros look pretty much likeeveryone else.

Beat the crowd to the nexttee, and glean the putting re-sults from the crowd reaction.

    4. Pay attention to the mar-shals. You may run into oneor two cut from the cloth ofNBA referee Joey Crawford, but in general they’re mild-mannered volunteers, onlythere to help.

    5. Unless you want to carrya shopping bag around all day, hold off on buying merchan-dise until you’re ready to headhome.

    6. Unless you’re asked, andyou won’t be, don’t share yourlimitless knowledge of thegame with strangers.

    7. Unless you’re a dunce de-termined to be recognized assuch, don’t yell “Baba booey!”

    8. Don’t yell at all, in fact. It’s not a tractor pull.

    9. Finally, and we can’t

stress this enough: Even ifyou plan to mostly sit, there’sgoing to be more walkingthan you think.

    Comfortable shoes, people.

Going to LCC? Here’s where to watch

As this is written, it is notknown where all the galleryropes will be, and what areasof Lancaster Country Clubwill be off-limits to specta-tors.

With that in mind, here are

some spots where you’ll beable to see a variety of U.S.Women’s Open golf and golf-ers with minimal exertion:

Behind the first green: Asyou face the green from theback, the tee at 12 and greenat the eighth — two terrificpar-3s — are just behind andto your left.

The ninth tee is directly toyour left. To your right are twoof the more interesting greenson the course — the 11th and

15th, both big-league par-4s.Next to the 11th green is thetee complex at 16, a shorterpar-4 with some strategic op-tions. Also, this is a high pointof the property, with a pan-oramic view of the back nine.

Behind the 18th tee: Another convergence, and an-other high, scenic viewpoint.

    The green at 10, which

    might be LCC’s toughest, isright there. So are the tees of11, 14 and 18 — all sweeping,up-and-down par-4s — andthe par-3 17th green.

The 1761 Club: This iskind of a cheat, since accesscomes only with a “member-ship,’’ which costs $225 forthe week, and memberships

were 99 percent sold out as of

June 27.The Club is a barn and ad-

joining temporary structurewith good views of tee shotsat the par-5 13th, the greenat the gorgeous par-3 12thand the second shots at 16, aninteresting par-4.

Oh, and food, a bar, comfychairs, a wraparound porch

    and air conditioning.

Across the Conestoga: From the second green, downa hill to a bridge over theriver, are the third throughsixth holes, bisected by theConestoga tributary StaufferRun. It’s a sequence of shorterholes that should yield birdiesand are very, very cool from adesign standpoint.

Behind the par-3 sixth, righton the river, is a small tee forthe seventh, a shorter, poten-tially risk-reward par-5 with a

pond guarding the green. This part of the course

might be hard (not impos-sible, let’s hope) to get to, butif you’re into golf courses, it’llbe worth the effort.

The 18th green: Amonggolf spectators, there areroamers and squatters.

This is a prime squattersspot at any tournament.

Bleachers create a stadiumeffect. Especially on Sunday, you’re more likely to see aSportsCenter moment herethan anywhere else.

    HOLE 1

    “STRAIGHTAWAY” 407 yards, par 4

The course kicks off with along par four that requiresa tee ball placed in thefairway to avoid the twobunkers on both sides of

the landing area. Fromthere, a mid to long ironwill need to be placed ona back-to-front slopinggreen that will give a playera good starting hole andget her round underwayon the front nine, whichare collectively called“Dogwood.”

    HOLE 2

“SIDE HILL” 374 yards, par 4

“Side Hill” is a short holethat doglegs-left, with a

fairway that slopes fromright-to-left. Look forplayers to avoid the left side

and place their tee balls on theright, without running throughthe fairway, to give themselves

a nice view into the well-bunkered green. With a wedgeor short club, there’s potentialfor many birdies on this hole.

    1

    HOLE 4

    “DOUBLECREEK” 346 yards, par 4

This is a shorter parfour that requiresa very conscioustee ball placement.Stauffer Runmeanders betweentwo landing areas andplays as a lateral andregular water hazard. It has the potentialto cause manyheadaches for theplayers. A well placedmid-iron or wedgeshot to a narrow, elevated green thatslopes from back-to-front will be required

to make a par on thischallenging hole. Andthe uphill putt is veryimportant on thistricky green.

    2

    HOLE 3

    “CONESTOGA” 399 yards, par 4

Hole 3 gives the playersa first glimpse of theConestoga River. Anaccurate drive froma high cliff, over theriver, will meet anextremely sloped fairwaythat runs back towardthe river. Off the tee,

players must be carefulto avoid the trees to theleft and out of boundsto the right. From thefairway, a mid-ironcould set up a playerwith a birdie putt, if shecan avoid the heavilybunkered area short ofthis green.

    3

    4HOLE 5

“ROUNDTHE BEND” 392 yards, par 4

As its name implies,“Round the Bend” isa dogleg to the left. Itrequires a tee ball tobe placed on the top ofa hill for the best viewof the green. A tee ball

too far to the right, andplayers face out-of-bounds stakes. Too far tothe left and they couldfind a grove of trees, orbe faced with a nastydownhill lie into a greenfronted by Stauffer Run.This is one of the twogreens on the front sidewithout bunkers andis in need of a well-played short iron to the

correct side of a slightcamelback that runsthrough the middle ofthis back-to-front-tilting real estate.

    5

    HOLE 6“TIGHT CORNER” 172 yards, par 3

It’s the second hole on thefront nine without a bunker,a simple tee shot to a longgreen that has water to theleft and behind the hole. Thistee shot was made easierwhen an old Sycamore thatused to overhang the greenwas removed several years

ago. With the tree gone, players can shape their teeshot any way that suits theireye, landing on a mostlyflat green that tilts slightlytoward the water on the left.

    15/28

    HOLE 10

“BIG BEND” 428 yards, par 4

This dogleg-right requiresa second shot played to anuphill green, guarded bybunkers on both the leftand the right. There is agenerous landing area onthis hole, and players mustplay from the fairway whentrying to hit a fairway metalto the green, which whilesloping uphill, sits mostlyflat. This is arguably thesecond hardest par four tohit in regulation.

    HOLE 12

“LITTLE DROP” 169 yards, par 3

This downhill par threerequires the proper clubto land a tee shot on thenarrow green. With aspring running in front of

the green and five well-placed bunkers left andlong, this is no easy drophole. It looks simple fromthe elevated tee box, buthitting a mid to long ironon to this green is noeasy task.

    HOLE 8

“PINEY KNOLL” 198 yards, par 3

“Piney Knoll,” a long parthree, will require longirons and utility woods tohit onto a severely slopedgreen that is guarded bybunkers, one left and oneright. There is a bit of afalse front with a generouschipping area short of thiskidney-shaped green. Aplayer who leaves herselfin position with an uphill

putt could avoid an easythree-putt bogey.

    HOLE 7

    “MEADOW” 482 yards, par 5

A long par five that has thepotential for bogeys anddouble-bogeys, hole 7features a split tee. An oldteeing area high above the

river was discovered severalyears ago when the coursewent through a restoration; anew tee box was built closeto the river that requiresplaying your tee ball over thewater. The tour’s long hittersmust decide if it’s worthrisking trying for this smallgreen in two shots.A tee shot that flies toofar right could land in theConestoga River. A pond juts out in front of the greenand runs along the right sideof the putting surface. Andthere is no safe bail-out area— four bunkers that sit on ahillside flank the left side ofthe green. This will be a veryinteresting hole on the frontnine to watch.

    7

    8

    HOLE 9

    “FARAWAY” 421 yards, par 4

    This is a benign hole

guarded by one fairwaybunker on the right sideof the landing area andand numerous trees in theleft rough. A slight, uphillsecond shot to a greenthat sits from right to leftshould leave a player withan easy two-putt par.

    9

    10

    11

    12

    HOLE 11

    “DOGWOOD” 416 yards, par 4

Called “Dogwood,” thishole has a very generouslanding area – but players

must avoid hitting too far tothe right, as their approachshot to the green could beblocked by trees. This holewill test the players’ abilityto hit long irons or metalwoods into a green that isvery undulated.

    16/28

    HOLE 14

    “THORNHOLLOW” 389 yards, par 4

The tee shot on hole 14needs to avoid the threefairway bunkers that protect

against a player cuttingtoo much off of the cornerto shorten her shot to thegreen. Two well-placedbunkers guard the smallgreen, which slopes fromback-to-front. If players placeshots to the green and leaveuphill putts, some birdiescould be made here.

    1314

    HOLE 15

    “DEVIL’S ELBOW” 414 yards, par 4

This is a long par four for tourplayers. (It is a par five forlocals and is a great risk-reward hole.) With a bunkeron the right begging to gobbleup tee shots and many treeslocated within the elbow, thisis a fairway that isn’t easy to

hold, especially for playerswho employ a big, ropingdraw. A fader of the golf ballwill have a much easier timetrying to position a ball for anapproach shot to this back-to-front sloping green. If they staybelow the hole, a birdie puttcould be made.

    15

    HOLE 16

“SANDY HOOK” 353 yards, par 4

“Sandy Hook” is pollutedwith bunkers, both left andright, and the hole narrowsseverely where an ideal teeshot would land in the shortgrass. This is one of the fewholes that players may beable to use something otherthan a driver for their tee shot.Depending on the length ofthe hitter’s typical tee shot, afive or three metal could be a

nice option, but players can’tlay back too far or risk beingblocked out of the left side ofthis friendly green that tiltsslightly to the left. Look formany birdie putts on this hole— and a lot of flying sand.

    16

    HOLE 17

“CROSS WIND” 178 yards, par 3

“Cross Wind” is a longishpar three. Shorter hittersmay employ mid to longirons or metal woodsto place their tee shotsnear the back-of-the-

green pin placement. Thegreen is somewhat flatand protected by a largerbunker left and a smallerone to the right.

    17

    HOLE 18

“PEARLY GATES” 437 yards, par 4

    The course closes out with

a lengthy par four thatwill be difficult for eventhe longest hitters to hitin two shots. The fairwayis flanked by one bunkerto the right and the greenapproach is guarded bytwo — one to the left andone to the right. Very fewplayers will find themselveswith a birdie putt from thislarge putting surface.

    18

    HOLE 13

“HAPPY VALLEY” 508 yards, par 5

This is a long, uphill, dogleg-leftpar five; players are unlikelyto hit the green in two shots.A driver played to the base ofthe hill, just short of a bunkerguarding the right rough, will

leave them with mid irons andfairway metals to a layup areathat’s roughly 100 yards out. If aplayer puts herself in the properposition to use a short wedgefor the approach shot, a birdiecan be made on this greenthat’s flanked by a bunker oneach side.

The United States Golf As-sociation is famous — infa-mous? — for tricking up a golfcourse when it’s time to hostone of its tournaments, mostnotably a U.S. Open.

Yes, the rough is allowedto grow to a club-grabbinglength, but that’s nearly thenorm now.

In the past, the USGA hasused other methods to makecourses an extreme test ofthe game. For example, at the2012 men’s U.S. Open at theOlympic Club in San Francis-

co, golfer Stephen Ames saidthe USGA watered the greenson the front nine, but not onthe back nine, making themharder to hold.

What the USGA might bethinking in regards to the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster

    Country Club next week isunknown.

But a conversation with Alli Weaver, who works at LCCand plays the course frequent-ly, and Rory Connaughton, amember of the executive com-mittee that was instrumentalin bringing the tournamentto LCC, could lead people to

think the USGA might nothave to resort to any tricks.

That’s because the coursewill be a challenge in and ofitself.

While several of the 156players in the field havedropped in to play LCC in

advance of the U.S. Open, thecourse can play differentlyevery day. Those practicerounds may have providedsome insight, but those les-sons learned could be out thewindow starting Thursday.

That could induce somenightmares for players, but

fun for fans.Connaughton knows not only the

history of the course, but also every

nook and cranny. He believes everyquestion that could be asked by a golf-er is asked on LCC’s layout.

    LCC

    “Typically, it’s death by 1,000 cuts.’’(Connaughton)

Connaughton said every hole haswhat’s called a line of charm, meaning

there is a line that can be drawn fromthe tee that puts a player in the bestposition to approach a green.

Finding that line, that angle, is thedifficult part when you mix in windand slopes.

“Every one of these greens is char-acterized by some fairly severe in-tercepting slopes,’’ Connaughtonsaid. “That’s consistent with William

Flynn’s architecture on every coursehe did. If you’re above the flagstickon these greens, typically, when thegreens are at pace, you can putt off

the green very easily. Or you can havea six-foot putt that moves three feet.’’

It was Flynn who set up the coursein 1919 then modified it to take four ofthe holes over the Conestoga River inthe 1940s. Flynn also designed Shin-necock Hills on Long Island and wasan advisor in the shaping of Pine Val-ley in New Jersey and Merion in Ar-dmore.

The slopes on the course are not

limited to the greens. Flynn’s designalso has golfers making second andthird shots when the ball is above orbelow their feet. So, on some holes, the emphasis is on distance, callingfor the use of long irons, or on place-ment.

“I think your second shot on par-4 holes is going to be very impor-tant,’’ Weaver said. “Because there

are greens out here — if you miss bya little — you’re going to have a toughputt, so the second shot is very impor-tant.’’

    No. 12

“Long is dead and short is in the water.’’(Connaughton)

Weaver said many of LCC’s holesplay differently each time through.Normally, it’s wind that changes them.Take No. 12, for example. It’s the short-est hole on the course, but the par 3

also has the shallowest green and hastrouble in front and in back.

“It’s a beautiful hole but as far as hit-ting a golf shot, it’s not the most ap-pealing to your eye,’’ she said. “It hasbunkers behind it and it has a falsefront. If you have any spin on your balland you do not hit it high enough, itcan roll back into the water (in front ofthe green).’’

“The wind swirls there,’’ Connaugh-ton said. “The green sits in a littlebowl. From one tee shot to the next ithe same group, the player may experi-

ence wind from behind or in her face orcoming from the left. What that does iswhat William Flynn really wanted todo: to cast doubt in the golfer’s mind.’’

Connaughton said that in the lastwo elite amateur tournaments playedat LCC, No. 12 played the most difficulagainst par.

    Elsewhere

     Potential for opportunity... and drama

Flynn was not completely maniacawhen designing LCC. There are birdieopportunities there.

Weaver listed Nos. 13 and 16 aschances to make birdies. A good sec-ond shot on 13 gives the players 100

yards or less to the green. No. 16 is ashorter par 4.

“I could see some girls hitting a

driver and going for it on 16,’’ shesaid. “Or, at least get close enoughthat they’ll have a short chip.’’

Some golfers will start theirrounds with a birdie attempt on No.1, provided they keep their tee shotin the fairway.

“I think the first six holes pres-ent your best birdie opportunities,’’Connaughton said.

“And I totally concur with Alli on

13 and 16. On 16, a golfer can hit4-iron to 5-iron to driver. Every op-tion is available, depending on whatyou’re looking to achieve on yoursecond shot.’’

Can you imagine having two play-ers tied for the Open lead as theystep to the 18th tee on Sunday?

A finishing hole providi ng a greatfinish.

Playing 18 anytime could be dra-

matic, no matter what day of thetournament.

You stand on the tee and thoughtsprobably go right to your impendin

second shot. But don’t forget about that tee

shot.“Honestly, you just want to get i

in the fairway,’’ Weaver said. “Oneof the biggest obstacles on 18 is thayou can’t go right. The rough is thick and there’s a bunker that comes intoplay. If you can get yourself a goodshot and are in the fairway, it’s alot more appealing to the eye to go

for the green. It’s a long hole andwill take whatever you have to gethere.’’

LCC. Lots to consider before yougrip it and rip it.

Somewhere, Mr. Flynn is smiling.Just like the fans who’ll come out towatch the U.S. Women’s Open.

The players? There will be at leasone smiling late Sunday evening oJuly 12.

    Course Notes: At LCC

The sand may come into play on the 16th hole at Lancaster Country Club. However, AlliWeaver, who works at LCC and plays the course frequently, is quick to note that the hole isone that offers golfers a good chance at making birdie.
