2018 Starter Flock Winners

For the tenth year, the USTSA awarded starter flocks to deserving youth aged 9-17. To celebrate that

through very generous donations from the membership we were able to award 3 flocks complete with a ram!!

The recipients were Matilda Weeding of Circle, Montana, Corinne Canen of Glendive, Montana and Hannah

Wetzstein of Buhl, Idaho. To purchase additional sheep each recipient received $150 from the USTSA and

$500 from donations from Bob Innes of Gillette, Wyoming and funds from the benefit auction held Friday night.

Each recipient was presented with their credits and membership notebook prior to the National Sale on Satur-

day from Caleb Pedersen who was the very first starter flock winner.

2018 USTSA Hall of Fame Winners

Cheryl Schultz

Cheryl was the wool judge at this years Nationals and also gave a presen-

tation on care of wool before the sheep are sheared to after what the

market is looking for. Cheryl became known to most when she started

as the head of the Montana Wool Lab. She was the first female in that

position and quickly made her presence and love for wool known. Jack

McRae noted she was the power house of the wool industry during her

time at the Wool Lab and greatly helped advance and inform producers.

She was also the US Targhee Sheep Association secretary for 5 years in

the late 90’s. She has since followed her husband, Mike, around the

state being his biggest asset to employment! Mike is currently the Coun-

ty Extension Agent in Miles City, Montana.

Keeping alive the 90’s, Mike and Cheryl brought their Targhee

Wear out of retirement for the 2018 Nationals!!!

US Sheep Experiment Station

The western range industry long ago was demanding a breed of

sheep, thick in natural fleshing, producting high quality apparel type

wool, and adapted to rugged conditions. To fulfill this need the Tar-

ghee sheep was developed by the US Sheep Experiment Station at

Dubios, Idaho. In 1926 a group of 210 of the experiment stations

cross-bred ewes, consisting f Rambouillet, Lincoln and Corridale

blood, were bred to nine of the smoothest, thickest experiment sta-

tion Rambouillet rams. After three years of the program, 201 first

generation ewes were carefully selected and bred intensely. The new

breed of sheep was named Targhee after the Targhee National Forest

where the sheep grazed during the summer. Two current employees

at Dubios attended the National Show and gave a presentation on the

history of Targhees and their current research after the wool show on

Friday.
