Prof. Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, Hon’ble Adviser to the Prime Minister, Health & Family Welfare and Social Welfare Affairs was chief guest at the seminar, along with special guest, Mr. Gregory Adams, Director,

HPN Office, USAID.The five policy briefs

were written jointly by icddr,b, Save the Children, Eminence and MEASURE

Evaluation, with support from USAID and based on the findings of the BDHS 2011 report. The policy briefs are expected to provide guidance to policy makers and donors alike on the future directions and interventions of Bangladesh’s health programmes. Funded by USAID, the demographic and health survey was undertaken by NIPORT, Mitra and Associates (Bangladesh), and ICF International (U.S.A.) in 2010.

Further reducing under-5 mortality in Bangladesh will require that we target and reach the poor with specific programme approaches.– Dr. Shams El Arifeen

The annual picnic, organised by the Staff Welfare Association (SWA) on 25 January, saw a record number of staff members and their families at the Rangamati Waterfront in Gazipur. Twenty five hundred picnickers enjoyed a day filled with cultural programmes, games and a lottery, with many children enjoying the swimming pool and other leisure facilities.

“It was a big challenge to organise a picnic for such a large crowd this year, but it was worth the effort when we saw how much the children enjoyed the day,” said SWA President Dr. Azharul Islam Khan.

Dr. Sayeeda Huq, Assistant Scientist with the Centre for Nutrition & Food Security, received AusAID’s Alumni Excellence Award this year. The award is given in recognition of exemplary achievements in a field of specialisation and for contributions made to the advancement of Australian education

and the institution they work for or alumni community. Dr. Huq said, “I am very proud and honoured to receive this prestigious award, and I will continue to do my very best for icddr,b.”

The Centre for Child & Adolescent Health organised a workshop on Opportunities and Challenges of Implementing Health Insurance for the Poor in Bangladesh. The event took place in collaboration with the Health Economics Unit of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on 2 February at the TRAction conference room.

The workshop was crucial, as the Government of Bangladesh has included health insurance in its health financing

The Technical Training Unit and the Centre for Control of Chronic Diseases, icddr,b joined hands with the Open University UK, Education for Health UK, IPCRG-BD and the James P. Grant School of Public Health (JPGSPH), BRAC University to organise a six-month International Asthma Diploma Module to enhance the capacity of health professionals in Bangladesh.

Interim Executive Director Dr. Abbas Bhuiya and JPGSPH Dean Dr. Timothy Evans greeted the 50 national doctors enrolled in the course, along with the local and expatriate faculty present.
