When Lauren began her exhaustive search for the best auto financing rates in Harrisonburg, she had no idea she would end up with a financial partner that exceeded her expectations. Initially she was drawn to DCCU for the auto loan, and over the next several years she continued to be impressed by the personalized service she received. Lauren recalls, “Each time I came into the branch, the staff was so nice and eager to help me.” Lauren recently faced a dilemma when she and her family relocated to Herndon, Virginia to be closer to her husband’s job in Washington, D.C. Upon settling into their new city, she began looking for a local banking option. After researching several financial institutions, Lauren found that DCCU remained the best choice, despite the distance. Even though the closest physical branch is in Woodstock, which is over 80 miles away from her home, Lauren’s local banking options couldn’t match DCCU’s digital banking experience. Technology allows Lauren to comfortably maintain a strong relationship with DCCU. “DCCU’s Online Banking and Mobile App make it easy for me to maintain my banking relationship, and I can’t say enough about Online Bill Pay,” Lauren said. “I love using Online Bill Pay because I can pay bills from my phone and I don’t have to remember to buy stamps!” Unlike her experience with other banks, there’s reduced lag time between when the payment is scheduled and when the check clears. “I love that the money comes out of my account so quickly after I schedule the bill to be paid,” said Lauren. DCCU balances personal service and convenient technology in a way that’s perfect for Lauren, especially since she no longer has access to a local branch. “DCCU does a great job keeping up with technology so that members who prefer a digital banking experience can still receive the same great service as members who live locally and go into the branches regularly,” Lauren said. “And if I need more extensive help, I know I can call the Service Center. They are always so friendly and knowledgeable, and can resolve the situation quickly.” At DCCU, once you become a member you are always a member. We rely on technology to help bridge the gap for members who don’t have access to a branch, or simply prefer to bank on the go. Lauren’s story is one example of how DCCU continues to meet the needs of our changing membership. Expanding our Field of Membership A message from DCCU’s President/CEO Steve F. Elkins

Board of Directors Recruitment Process UnderwayThe process has begun to recruit volunteers to serve on the DCCU Board of Directors. The current terms held by Everett J. Campbell, Jr. and Timothy M. Simmons will expire in 2018.

The Governance Committee is accepting applications from voting members interested in serving on the Board. Nominations may be submitted between July 1 and July 31, 2017. Application information is available online at mydccu.com. A slate will be presented to the membership by October 2, 2017.

Fraud Prevention: Romance Scams

DCCU’s mission is to improve the financial health of the communities we serve. We are excited to announce that our recent request to expand our field of membership has received approval from the State Corporation Commission. Now, individuals who live, work, worship, attend school, or volunteer in Clarke, Frederick, Page and Warren counties, and the City of Winchester can become members of our cooperative. We believe these neighboring communities will greatly benefit from our quality products, dedicated service, and genuine commitment to making our community a better place.

Expanding our field of membership does not change our level of commitment to serving our existing members. It simply means we now have the opportunity to share all the benefits of credit union membership that you have come to know with even more individuals, and allow them to get to know the DCCU difference in the same way.

At this time we do not have immediate plans to build branches in these areas; however our Board of Directors and Senior Leadership are committed to conducting extensive research to examine all possibilities for expanding our branch network in the coming years. In the meantime, interested individuals are welcome to join DCCU and take advantage of our many electronic banking options, including our robust Online Banking platform and our Mobile App.

Thank you for your continued support of our cooperative. We appreciate the opportunity to serve our members and the community.

A romance scam is a confidence trick involving false romantic intentions towards a victim, gaining their affection, and then using that goodwill to commit fraud.

Scammers often take advantage of people through dating websites, apps, or social media. Scammers will often express strong feelings for victims in a short period of time and usually suggest moving the relationship to private channels such as texting, email, or instant messaging. They will go to great lengths to gain the victim’s interest and trust; and once they have, they will ask for money, gifts, or banking details. They often pretend to need money for some sort of emergency such as a severely ill family member that needs surgery or recent robbery or theft. The scammer may also attempt to set up an in-person interaction but need money to cover travel expenses. If money for travel is sent, the scammer always gives an excuse of why they can’t travel or an elaborate story of why they need more money.

Tips to Avoid Becoming a Victim:

Be skeptical of unsolicited communication

Use a search engine to conduct a search of names and otherinformation and an image search of profile pictures to verify identity

Be alert to spelling and grammar mistakes in written or spokencommunication

Be cautious when sharing personal pictures or videos

Alert family and friends to any in-person meetings

Never send money or give out banking information to anunknown individual

If you think you have been scammed, report it to the website where the scammer first contacted you. Provide as many details about the scammer (such as their profile name, email address, or phone number) as possible. If you think you have provided your DCCU banking information, please contact the DCCU Compliance Department immediately at [email protected].

DCCU recently announced the winners of its annual scholarship contest. Applicants were asked to write an essay related to challenges small business owners will face in the future, and how credit unions can aid in their success. DCCU staff members attended many of the high school awards ceremonies to meet the winners and make the scholarship presentation in person. This year, two new categories were added to now include students attending graduate school or a tech school in pursuit of certification or licensure.
