The p r i n c i p a l goa l o f t h e NRSA gran t mechanisms is t o t r a i n s c i e n t i s t s f o r f u t u r e careers i n biomedical and behaviora l r e sea rch . An important f a c t o r i n biomedical and behaviora l r e sea rch is t h e need t o maintain t h e h ighes t l e v e l s o f i n t e g r i t y i n t h e conduct of r e sea rch . The r e sea rch t r a i n i n g environment i n t h e u n i v e r s i t y s e t t i n g provides a powerful contex t i n which t o promote r e spons ib l e r e sea rch p r a c t i c e s .

N I H and ADAMHA recognize t h a t t h e s c i e n t i f i c community is a t an e a r l y s t a g e of developing information and methods t h a t p e r t a i n s p e c i f i c a l l y t o t r a i n i n g i n r e sea rch e t h i c s f o r t r a i n e e s . Not a l l methods w i l l work i n a l l t r a i n i n g s i t u a t i o n s given t h e he t e rogene i ty among d i s c i p l i n e s and p ro fes s ions . There are no s i n g l e models or paradigms. Appreciat ion o f t h e he t e rogene i ty amongt h e biomedical and behaviora l r e sea rch components wi th in t h e i n s t i t u t i o n s cal ls f o r f l e x i b i l i t y i n approaches t o e f f e c t i v e educa t ion and t r a i n i n g models.

I n s t i t u t i o n s must accept primary r e s p o n s i b i l i t y and be allowed t o develop t h e i r own ways o f promoting r e spons ib l e conduct o f r e sea rch i n conjunct ion with t h e i r t r a i n i n g programs. S c i e n t i f i c and admin i s t r a t ive l e a d e r s o f t h e u n i v e r s i t y o r from o u t s i d e (as c o n s u l t a n t s o r speakers ) could be a v i s i b l e p a r t o f t h i s e f f o r t . Appl icants are urged t o d i s c u s s t h e development o f methods on t h i s important t o p i c with t h e i r co l leagues and a l s o look t o t h e pro fes s iona l a s s o c i a t i o n s f o r guidance as w e l l as d i scuss ions wi th N I H andADAMHA s t a f f .

The Reproductive Sc iences Branch (RSB), Center f o r Populat ion Research (CPR),Nat iona l I n s t i t u t e o f Chi ld Heal th and Human Development ( N I C H D ) , suppor t sr e sea rch on reproduct ion t h a t relies on a v a r i e t y o f approaches i n biomedical s c i e n c e s . Among t h e g ran t mechanisms used t o provide r e sea rch suppor t , t h e RSB uses :

Spec ia l i zed Research Centers (P50s) which are i n t e g r a t e d groups o f r e sea rch p r o j e c t s and suppor t ing co re s e r v i c e fac i l i t i es . The r e sea rch a c t i v i t i e s included i n such p r o j e c t g r a n t s must comprise,by d e f i n i t i o n , a m u l t i d i s c i p l i n a r y approach t o biomedical problemsi n reproduct ion . Although t h e s e r e sea rch programs may have more than one theme, focus, o r emphasis, a l l o f t h e p r o j e c t s must be respons ive t o one o r more o f t h e s p e c i f i c areas o f reproduct iveresea rch which c o n s t i t u t e t h e purview o f t h e RSB, CPR, NICHD.

Center Core Grants (P30s) t h a t support Center Core fac i l i t i es designed t o enhance e x i s t i n g f e d e r a l l y supported r e sea rch p r o j e c t swi th in t h e purview o f t h e RSB, CPR, N I C H D . Such Center awards r e q u i r e a c r i t i c a l mass o f i nd iv idua l , reproduct ive-or ien ted awards whose p r o d u c t i v i t y and q u a l i t y would be increased by suppor t from c e n t r a l t e c h n i c a l f a c i l i t i e s .

A t p r e s e n t , t h e RSB suppor t s a f i x e d number of c e n t e r s wi th a commitment of f i v e y e a r s o f suppor t t h a t is compet i t ive ly renewable f o r a d d i t i o n a l f ive-year per iods . Support f o r one P50 Center and t h r e e P30 Centers ends i n FY 1992,and it is a n t i c i p a t e d t h a t t h e s e Centers w i l l submit renewal a p p l i c a t i o n s . While t h e r e are no new Center p o s i t i o n s a v a i l a b l e a t t h i s time, new groups o f i n v e s t i g a t o r s , i n a d d i t i o n t o t h e c u r r e n t awardees, are i n v i t e d t o compete f o r t h e e x i s t i n g f o u r (4)p o s i t i o n s .

P o t e n t i a l a p p l i c a n t s should con tac t t h e RSB s ta f f f o r f u r t h e r information r ega rd ing reproduct ive sc i ences c e n t e r g r a n t s (P50s and P 3 0 s ) .
