An EF Gap Year Abroad is where it all begins. Our students come from around the world – from Barcelona to Shanghai and Boston to San Francisco – united by a passion to discover, learn and succeed. From the moment they first meet, our students share an unforgettable experience as they spend 6, 9 or 11 months in one of 12 incredible destinations worldwide.
So, what does an EF Gap Year Abroad student look like? In truth, they look just like you. High school graduates, university students, professionals – and even those who are not quite sure what move to make next. Each student trusts EF to help them develop language fluency, build a bright future and connect with the world. The best part? You could be one of them.

HOW FAST WILL YOU LEARN?
EF’s levels are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which is published by the Council of Europe. Each CEFR stage is divided into 3 EF course levels.
Our learning guarantee means we promise you will progress one course level every six weeks. The chart to the left shows the ideal progress you can expect to achieve, although your success depends on the intensity of your program and your personal motivation. Learning at higher levels continues through the C2 stage, where you can master new concepts and strategies to perform at native speaker level.

FOOTBALL MATCH
Take a Japanese Cuisine class to learn the language and make traditional Asian food
EF Barcelona is just 15 minutes from Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona
I love everything about Japan: the food, manga, samurais, you name it! Learning how to make sushi from an authentic itamae was the highlight of my year in Tokyo. That experience abroad taught me so much more than I ever dreamed it would.
Pierre, France

“I started playing football when I was three – and I’ve always wanted to watch my hero, Lionel Messi, play live in action. I can’t wait to join in the stands of Camp Nou and cheer along with 98,000 sport fanatics just like me. My goal is to do it all in Spanish!

LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE
EF’s Paris school is in the trendy Opéra district
There’s a French word that I learned in class a few days before: ‘magnifique’ – which translates as magnificent. And that perfectly describes my Parisian experience.
Hilda, Sweden
“ “I wanted to spend a year after high school gaining work experience, but my true passion is to surf – so I loved that my bedroom was such a short walk from the beach. It was perfect for surfing by sunset. After work at my volunteer project, I’d grab my board and head for the water. My evenings were filled with crashing waves, cracking jokes with my Costa Rican friends and watching the stars come out – those are the things that I’ll never forget.
