With the return of three conferencechampions in six events and an emergingdiving program, the Air Force men's swim-ming & diving team envisions a tremendous-ly successful 2006-07 season.

"We are a much stronger team than wewere a year ago," men's swimming headcoach Rob Clayton said. "Our diving squad ismuch improved. Coach Stan Curnow hasbrought in some excellent divers to comple-ment platform diving champion BradyLindberg."

Led by a veteran and talented seniorcast, the team goal of a conference title iswithin grasp. Seniors Chris Knaute and PaulParmenter are the team captains for 2006-07.

"Our team captains Chris Knaute andPaul Parmenter are both conference champi-ons and will continue to lead by example,"Clayton said.

Knaute is a seven time Mountain WestConference Champion, the 2005 MWCSwimmer of the year and a two-time honor-able mention All-American. "Since he'swalked into the program, we've had greatexpections of Chris and he's never disap-pointed," Clayton said. "Paul has developedinto the top 200 IMer in the Mountain WestConference.” Parmenter holds the schoolrecord in the 200 IM and is the defendingMWC 200 IM Champion.

Picked by the conference coaches in thepreseason poll to finish third, Clayton feelsoptimistic that the Falcons have a shot to winthe conference title.

"BYU and UNLV look like they are at thetop of the conference, but we feel we areright up there with them," Clayton said. "Ourteam goal, as always, is to win the MountainWest Conference. In order to meet that goal,we have to have everybody swim better thanthey've ever swam before."

With Knaute and Parmenter leading theway, the medley events look to be one of theFalcons’ top events. Fellow seniors NickBurton and Justin Lapin were also all-MWC

first team selections inboth the 200 and 400 IM.

"Along with Chrisand Paul, we have Nickand Justin. These fourare clearly the class of theMWC in the medleyevents," Claytonremarked. "We anticipatefreshman Alex Yee willstep in and make it to theIM finals come February."

Another teamstrength will be the dis-tance freestyle events.Knaute is the three-timedefending conferencechampion and school record holder in the1650 free. Knaute also holds the schoolrecords in the 200 and 500 free. FreshmanSean O'Keefe and sophomore Bryan Averyhave shown promise in the early season andwill be counted upon to score points inmeets.

"We should be very strong in the dis-tance free events with Knaute and freshmanSean O'Keefe. Bryan Avery is vastly improvedfrom a year ago and will have an outstand-ing season in the 200 and 500 freestyles,"Clayton said.

The Falcons are deep in the sprint-freestyle events as well. Seniors Ryan Mossand Nick Uzelac lead the charge with juniorT.J. Cowling and freshman Chris Morin pro-viding added depth as well.

Moss is tied for 10th all-time at theAcademy in the 50 free and Cowling ranks10th in the 100 free.

"Seniors Ryan Moss and Nick Uzelacshould lead our sprint groups,” Clayton said.“T.J. has been training very well and shouldhave a breakthrough season," Clayton said."Freshman Chris Morin should contributeimmediately."

In the breaststroke events, Clayton looksto senior Andrew Bergman and sophomoreJustin Day to carry the load. Bergman isamongst the top 10 all-time at the Academyin both breast events and Day ranks fifth all-time at the Academy in the 100 breast.Burton, who was a all-MWC selection in the200 breast will also contribute.

"Justin Day had a tremendous freshmanyear, culminating as a finalist in the 100breaststroke," Clayton said. "Between Justinand Andrew, and with Nick in the 200Breaststroke, we should be very strong in thebreast events."

Leading the way in the backstrokes willbe Lapin, Yee, junior Spencer Liedl and soph-omore Kai Yamashiro. Lapin ranks third atthe Academy in the 200 back and seventh inthe 100. Parmenter is seventh all-time in the100 back and Yamashiro is ninth all-time inthe 200 back.

"Justin will challenge for the MWC title in

the 200 back, and Kai looks like he's readyfor a great year after a standout freshmancampaign," Clayton said.

The butterfly events will be handled byParmenter, Burton and fellow senior MattSievers. Burton set the school record in the100 fly at the 2006 MWC championships andSievers is 6th all-time at the Academy in the200 fly and ninth in the 100 fly. PaulParmenter ranks fifth all-time in the 200 fly.

"Matt Sievers had a great year in bothbutterfly events as a junior and he should beright near the top of the MWC this year,”Clayton said. “Nick is at the top of the return-ing swimmers in the conference in the 100 fly.Paul will be one of the MWC favorites in the200 fly."

The Falcons will be strong again in therelay events, headlined by the 800 freestylegroup. The Falcons have set school recordsin the 800 free the last two years and shouldchallenge the school record for a third con-secutive season.

"Our 800 free relay should be right at thetop of the conference," Clayton remarked."We should be strong in all our relays."

The diving team is the deepest and mosttalented group that diving coach StanCurnow has had in his tenure at theAcademy. Led by senior Brady Lindberg, theFalcons have six divers that will compete toearn points for the team.

Lindberg is the defending MWC platformdiving champion and the Falcons' top pointscorer in both the one-meter and three-meterdives. Sophomore Randy Rogers had a solidfreshman campain and showed steadyimprovement in the offseason. Junior NathanGlandon joins the team after being an NCAAqualifier for the men's gymnastics team hisfirst two years at the Academy. DavidArlington, Kyle Van Valkenburg and BrianWilhite comprise the freshmen diving classand come to the Academy with strong cre-dentials.

"Our diving team is as solid as we'vehad here," Clayton said. "They will be com-petitive in every meet and should score a lotof points at the MWC Championships."

The Falcon swimming program hadits beginnings in 1955 with the first Air ForceAcademy class. The Academy in ColoradoSprings was not yet built and the cadetsattended school in Denver at Lowry AFB. Dr.M.M. MacKenzie was the first head coach andcompiled a 15-11 record during the first fouryears. The Cadet Natatorium was completedin 1959 and the Falcons hosted their first homemeet that fall.

The 1960s were an exciting decadefor the Falcons as Air Force swimmers quali-fied for the NCAA Championships eight out of10 years. Capt. Paul Cleland was head coachfor three years, achieving a 25-10 record.Capt. Bob Nugent took over in 1963 and went23-19 in a three-year stint. Backstroker BarryBeilinski became the swimming program'sfirst All-American in 1963.

In 1966, the NCAA brought theDivision I championships to the Academy.Swimming World Magazine complimentedthe meet organization.

"The Academy, nestled in an 18,000acre site at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, matched its architectural grandeur with out-standing organizational efficiency to make thechampionships one of the greatest ever held."

Nugent and Colonel E.A. Rafalko, theFalcons' athletic director and meet director, were commended for their contributions, especially for securing electronic timing. Later, this proved that the equipment should bemandatory for all important meets. The "7,000plus feet above sea level" conditions createdcomment and controversy as coaches predict-ed and evaluated their swimmers' perform-ance at the high altitude.

That year, breaststroker Steven

Seigler was the swimming team's second All-American. He repeated in 1967, the year Maj.Paul Arata began his tenure as head coach. The final year of the 1960s was one of thehighlight years of the decade as the Falconswere 19-0 in dual meets. One of the mostexciting dual meets came against ColoradoState. The meet came down to the last relay. Ifthe Falcons won, they would win the meet bya point. The packed stands cheered BobNieman, Warren Flaherty, D.K. Martin andBryan Rye to a victory and an NCAA qualifyingtime (fastest in the country up to that point) of3:12.02, four seconds ahead of the Rams. TheAir Force team took nine to the NCAAs thatyear and the same relay team placed 10th,good for All-American status.

Rye, a transfer from Colorado State, would go down in Falcon history after thatyear. In the meet versus the Rams, he won the50 and 100 free and anchored the 400 freerelay team with a 45.6 split, one of the fastestsplits in the country. Rye also beat CSU's All-American sprinter, Dennis O'Connor, threetimes that day. After graduation, Rye flew heli-copters and served in Vietnam where he wasawarded the Meritorious Service Medal for asuccessful rescue mission. Rye was killed inaction in 1975 and posthumously promoted tothe rank of Captain. The Most ValuableSwimmer Award is named in his honor andgiven each year at the Annual IndividualAwards Banquet.

In 1970, Nieman was an All-American in two events as he won the conso-lation heat in both the 100 and 200 freestyle atthe NCAAs. A few years later, Nieman wouldbecome the Academy's first Olympian as hecompeted in the 1976 Games in modern pen-

tathlon. He would qualify for the team again in1980.

The men entered the WesternAthletic Conference (WAC) in 1981 and a periodof adjustment followed. The men had thedepth to win dual meets as they were 4-0 inWAC contests that first year but had a toughtime at the WAC Championships. In 1982, JohnSayre was the program's first WAC champion(400 IM) as he also qualified for the NCAAs.Mike Brown qualified for the Olympic trials inthe 200 meter butterfly, after placing ninth(2:03.71) at the NCAAs in 1984.

Arata, after 16 years at the helm, retired after the 1983 season. His 16 years isthe longest tenure of any Air Force Academyswimming coach. His record was 188-10 forthe men and 113-5-1 for the women, a com-bined total of 301-15-1, an unreal winning per-centage of 95 percent. The men also had anundefeated home victory streak of 108, cover-ing 16 years beginning in 1967. During Arata'sreign, there were six All-Americans in eightevents and one national champion on themen's team. On the women's side there weresix national champions in 12 events with 27different women achieving All-American hon-ors in 112 different events.

Maj. Kelly Kemp was the next headcoach and remained in that position until1987.

Maj. Jim Hogue took over in 1988,while Lt. Col. Mikki King returned to coach thediving team. The next few years were divingdominant, as Hogue was Division II coach ofthe year in both 1987 and 1988. In the fall of1988, Keith "Casey" Converse began his firstyear as head coach.

In 1990, the Falcons beat WAC rivalsBYU and Utah in home dual meets. Thatsame year, Drew Whitting became the team'ssecond WAC champion by winning the 500and 1,650 free and qualifying for the NCAAs.The 1991 WAC Championships saw theFalcons ascend to a second-place finishbehind Utah, their highest WAC finish ever. The team garnered four WAC champions,Whitting again in the 500 and 1,650 free,Bucky MacLaughlin in the 50 free and TonyBamsey in the 100 breaststroke. The team alsowon its first-ever relay championship (200 freerelay comprised of Bamsey, MacLaughlin,Sheesley and Squires). For this remarkable fin-ish, Converse was named WAC coach of theyear. Whitting also became the first All-American (HM) on the men's team since 1975as he placed 13th in both the 500 and the1,650 free at the NCAA Division IChampionships.

The men continued to fare well, going 7-2 in dual meets in 1992 with Bamseywinning another WAC title (50 free). Joininghim in the winner's circle was Sam Chestnut(1,650 free) as the Falcons placed fifth at theWAC Championships. The following yearbrought an end to one great swimmer'scareer but the beginning of another's.Whitting won his third WAC title by winning a

title in the 500 meter free. His time of 4:20.09is still the WAC record. Freshman Matt Davisalso won a WAC championship in the 400 IMas the men went 6-3 in dual meets.

Davis continued his excellence, asthe Falcons' only WAC champion in 1994,repeating in the 400 IM. Jon Kalberer (dis-tance freestyle) joined Davis on the All-WACteam. Davis would win three more WACchampionships during his career (400 IM in1993 and 1994 and 200 fly in 1995).

The 1998-99 season saw RobClayton take over as head coach. He replacedConverse, who moved over to coach thewomen's program full-time. The team contin-ued to climb up the ranks in the conferencestandings. After finishing 11-2 in dual meets, the team improved to a fifth-place finish at theWAC Championships. With 11 dual wins, AirForce reached the double figure mark in victo-ries for the second consecutive year and onlythe second time since 1986. The effort at theWAC Championships was one of the best everfor the Falcons, with seven records beingestablished, three of them in individual eventsand four in relay events.

In the fall of 1999, the Academyjoined the Mountain West Conference as afounding institution. Charlie Toth became theAcademy's first MWC champion in any sportwhen he won the 100 freestyle at the 2000

MWC Championships. The team moved upagain in the conference standings to finishthird.

The highlight of the 2001 MWCChampionships was the team's victory in the200 medley relay. Paul Brehm, John Dayton,Nate Amidon and Toth brought home the titlein record-setting time to claim the Academy'sfirst relay championship in 10 years. MattIhlenfeld swept the breaststroke events, establishing new MWC records of 54.70 and1:58.67. The Falcons also sent two swimmersto the NCAA Championships (Toth andIhlenfeld) for the first time since 1995.

At the 2002 MWC Championships, the Falcons won the 400 medley relay (Brehm,Dayton, Eric Pounds, Amidon) and Brehm wonthe 100 and 200 backstrokes. For the thirdconsecutive year, the Air Force Academy fin-ished third.

After a 12-2 season (3-1 in MWC) in2002-03, the Falcons finished as conferencerunners-up at 2003 MWC Championships. This was only the second time in Academy his-tory that the program had finished this high.Paul Brehm again led the effort, as he suc-cessfully defended his championship in the200 backstroke.

At the 2004 Championships, theFalcons repeated as runners-up. This cameon the heels of finishing the regular season

with an 8-4 record in dual meets. FreshmanChris Knaute capped off a stellar rookie cam-paign by winning the 1650 free with a time of15:28.21, an MWC record and the second-fastest mark in school history.

As a sophomore, Knaute dominatedthe 2005 MWC Championships, winning the500, 1650, and 400 IM. His accomplishmentsled to his being named MWC Swimmer of theYear. He became the first in the history of theprogram to receive Conference Swimmer ofthe Year Honors. Joining him on the all-MWCteam were sophomore Justin Lapin and seniorEvan Parr.

In 2006, the Falcons took third placeat the MWC Championships setting fourschool records in the process. Knaute defend-ed his titles in the 500, 1650 and 400 IM whilePaul Parmenter won the 200 IM and BradyLindberg won the platform diving. StanCurnow was named co-diving coach of theyear. Knaute also participated in the NCAA’searning honorable mention All-America hon-ors in the 400 IM and 500 Free.

As with the Falcons’ swimming program, theAir Force diving team has also enjoyed enormoussuccess over the last 31 years.

Air Force has had a total of 16 first-team All-Americans and three national champions (Division Iand Division II) in just three decades of competition.

The first great diver in Academy history wasDon McLean. A 1966 graduate, McLean was an All-American in 1965 and placed ninth in the nation onone-meter and 12th on three-meter. He was the firstFalcon diver to qualify for the NCAAs and earn All-American status.

In the 1970s, the diving coach position wasfilled by Olympic diving coach Dick Smith, whobegan laying a solid foundation that would benefitfuture Air Force divers. He was replaced in 1973 byCapt. Micki King, a springboard diving gold medal-ist in the 1972 Olympic Games. Included in this era isRick McAlister, one of the best athletes to everattend the Academy. Coached by both Smith andKing, McAlister is the most successful diver inAcademy history. In 1974, he was the three-meterNCAA national champion and placed fourth onone-meter, single-handedly scoring 27 points as theFalcons placed 13th in the nation. A four-time All-American, he won five national independent titlesand took three second-place finishes on the one-meter board at the National AAU’s.

In 1976, Chuck Kennedy replaced King as thecoach and a new era began as women entered theAcademy. Janet Peterson, class of 1981, was theAcademy’s first female All-American in diving. Shewon the award eight times, twice each year on bothboards, at the AIAW Division II NationalChampionships. Shawn Whitson, an ‘82 graduateand another outstanding diver, was a seven-timeAll-American. In 1982 Linda Telkamp became thefirst female diver to claim a national title, winning thethree-meter competition. Telkamp was also an

eight-time All-American as the 1980s produced sev-eral diving legends including Nancy Burdick (‘83), afive-time All-American. In 1983, Micki King returnedto coach four more All-Americans. They were TinaLandschultz (five times), Dana Strong (three times),Pam Klein (one time) and Mary Rainaldi (one time).

In 1990, King was replaced by Capt. BrianShimel and both had a hand in coaching thestrongest duo of woman divers in the history of theAcademy, Kim Dornburg and Dawn Dishner.Dornburg, a six-time All-American, was nationalchampion on one-meter and three-meter in 1988and again won the one-meter title in 1991. Dishner,a seven-time All-American, was the three-meternational champion in 1989. Dornburg won the MostValuable Swimmer/Diver award three times, whileDishner won it twice. Only one other swimmer ordiver (Patty Martinez) has ever won the award morethan twice. In addition to the success of the womendivers, the men also fielded strong competitors. JeffFaley qualified for the NCAAs in 1987 on bothboards.

In 1991, another great Academy diver, BoBloomer, became Air Force’s first WAC championdiver by winning the three-meter competition.

In 1992, Stan Curnow took over the divingreins. Thus far he has produced several female All-Americans. In his first year, Sarah Saxer, class of1993, earned All-American honors on both boardswhile Rebecca Currie was an All-American in thethree-meter. The two repeated as All-Americans in1993. With Saxer gone, Casey Cornish earned hon-orable mention on both boards in 1994 while Curriefinished out her career with her first top-eight finishin one-meter. In 1995, three women earned honor-able mention All-American honors and helped theFalcons to the Division II national championship. They were Lauren Eckert, Cornish and DawnMcCown. Cornish, finishing out a brilliant career,

was the only Falcon to score on both boards at the1996 NCAAs, a year that brought another nationalchampionship to Air Force.

Sophomore Elly Bunzendahl became the pro-gram’s first first-team All-American since Currie in1993 when she earned the honor by placing sev-enth in the three-meter.

As the Academy ‘s diving program forges aheadin the new millenium, a commitment to improve onboth the men’s and women’s side has been evident. Intheir final season competing in the WAC, the diverscontributed to Air Force's fifth-place finish.

The United States Air Force Academy offers afour-year program of instruction and experi-ence designed to provide cadets the knowl-edge and character essential for leadership, and the motivation to serve as Air Forcecareer officers. Each cadet graduates with abachelor of science degree and a commis-sion as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

CCOOUURRSSEE OOFF SSTTUUDDYYCadets are exposed to a balanced curriculumthat provides a general and professionalfoundation essential to a career Air Force offi-cer. Special needs of future Air Force officersare met by professionally oriented courses, including human physiology, computer sci-ence, economics, military history, astronau-tics, law and political science.

The core curriculum includes courses in sci-ence, engineering, social sciences andhumanities. Cadets take additional electivecourses to complete requirements for one of25 major areas of study. About 60 percent ofthe cadets complete majors in science andengineering; the other 40 percent graduate inthe social sciences and humanities. Some ofthe most popular majors include manage-ment, astronautical engineering, internationalaffairs and political science, history, behav-ioral science, civil engineering, aeronauticalengineering, electrical engineering and engi-neering mechanics.

FFAACCUULLTTYY CCOOMMPPOOSSIITTIIOONNThe majority of the Academy's nearly 600 fac-ulty members are Air Force officers. They areselected primarily from career-officer volun-teers who have established outstandingrecords of performance and dedication. Eachhas at least a master's degree and morethan 35 percent have doctorates.

In addition to imparting knowledge, each fac-ulty member must assist with the develop-ment of character and qualities of leadershipessential to future Air Force career officersand the motivation of service to country. To

provide greater contributions by a diversefaculty, the Academy has several distin-guished civilian professors and associateprofessors who serve one or more years.Officers from other services are members ofthe faculty as well, and a small number ofofficers from allied countries teach in the for-eign language, history and political sciencedepartments. Distinguished civilian and mili-tary lecturers also share their expertise withthe cadets during the academic year.

AATTHHLLEETTIICC PPRROOGGRRAAMMThe Academy's athletic program is designedto improve physical fitness, teach athleticskills and develop leadership qualities. Toachieve its goals, the Academy offers someof the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athleticprograms in the nation. Cadets take at leastthree different physical education courseseach year.

MMIILLIITTAARRYY EEDDUUCCAATTIIOONN AANNDD TTRRAAIINNIINNGGAn aerospace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins withbasic cadet training and continues through-out the four years. Seniors are responsible forthe leadership of the cadet wing, while jun-iors and sophomores perform lower-levelleadership and instructional tasks. Cadets areprojected into as many active leadershiproles as possible to prepare them to be effec-tive Air Force officers.

Fundamental concepts of military organiza-tion -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritageand physical training -- are emphasized thefirst summer during basic cadet training.Freshmen then study the military role in U.S.society as well as the mission and organiza-tion of the Air Force. Sophomores receiveinstruction in communicative skills, and jun-iors study the combat and operationalaspects of the Air Force. Military studies forthe senior class focus on military thought.

The Academy offers courses in flying, naviga-tion, soaring and parachuting, building frombasic skills to instructor duties. Cadets may flylight aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Those not qualified for flight training mustenroll in a basic aviation course. Astronomyand advanced navigation courses also areavailable. Students bound for pilot trainingenroll in the flight screening program at theAcademy and fly the DA-20 Katana aircraft.

Summer training for cadets is divided intothree, three-week training periods. There area variety of programs available, and eachcadet is required to complete two trainingperiods each summer with leave during theother period. All new cadets take six weeks ofbasic cadet training in their first summer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets' second sum-mer. For other second-summer training peri-ods, cadets have options such as workingwith young airmen in an operational unit atan Air Force installation, airborne parachutetraining, soaring or basic free-fall parachutetraining.

During their last two summers, all cadets areoffered leadership training as supervisors orinstructors in summer programs, such asbasic cadet training, survival training, freefallparachuting and soaring.

Extracurricular activities also are an integralpart of the education program. The cadet skiclub, drum and bugle corps, cadet choraleand forensics are a few of the programsavailable.

NNOOMMIINNAATTIIOONNSSNominations to the Academy may beobtained through a congressional sponsor orby meeting eligibility criteria in other cate-gories of competition established by law. HHIISSTTOORRYY ---- In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators wasappointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet theneeds of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that AirForce requirements could not be met by expanding the other service acad-emies and recommended an Air Force academy be established withoutdelay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed acommission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air ForceAcademy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission nar-rowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of theAir Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo.Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry AirForce Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completedfor occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction costwas $142 million.

Women entered the academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the classof 1980.
