Spring/Summer 2012 Dear Friends, Each of the four Gospels provides some insight into the person of Jesus Christ. But it is Matthew’s gospel which predominately reflects Jesus as Teacher in the Sermon on the Mount, The Missioning Discourse and the Parables, to name a few examples. Following the Master Teacher, the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown as an apostolic religious institute in the Church continue to share in the mission and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ. The Ursulines first arrived in Youngstown in 1874 in response to the need for Catholic School teachers and administrators. Throughout the years, our mission in Jesus has remained constant, while the specific forms it takes have undergone adaptation to meet the needs of the times. Christian Formation at all stages of life is today the focus. It expresses itself in a variety of forms where teaching skills are adapted to each particular group served. In this edition of our newsletter, we will share some of the forms and places where Ursuline Sisters are teaching today. In keeping with the social teachings of the Church, each Sister brings a sense of justice and a special concern for the poor and disadvantaged to her ministry. The motto for the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown is: “To live for the glory of God alone.” SOLI DEO GLORIA, Sister Nancy Dawson, General Superior Following the Master Teacher On April 29, family and friends toured the new spaces. Many thanks to all who donated towards or worked to help create this project! To view video and photos, visit our website and Facebook page. In Gratitude On April 28 (at left), we gave thanks for and blessed Phase I of our Motherhouse Reconfiguration, which created 24 handicapped- accessible living spaces and bathrooms for our Sisters and updated the wing’s infrastructure.

Sister Norma, Director of Hispanic Outreach for Beatitude House, teaches adult women who’ve immigrated to the Mahoning Valley these important studies.

St. Angela Merici.

Several Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown are involved in higher education. Sister Patricia McNicholas, upper left, is not only Executive Director of Beatitude House, she also has served on the board of trustees for Eastern Gateway Community College in Youngstown since its founding. Several Beatitude House participants are furthering their education at the college. In addition to serving on the Sisters’ Leadership Team and as Finance Director, Sister Mary McCormick, upper left, is a Professor at St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Cleveland and teaches at Walsh University in North Canton. Sister Nancy Dawson, General Superior, is an adjunct instructor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University.

Join Our Labyrinth 'Journeys' The Ursuline Center is offering a new program of facilitator-guided walks called Labyrinth Journeys. Walks begin at 6:30 p.m. and are as follows.

Please join us in extending sincere gratitude to the Youngstown Foundation, which awarded our Apartments for Senior Citizens of Limited Income Project a grant of $20,000. Below is Jan Strasfeld, Executive Director of the Foundation, with Sister Nancy Dawson.
Area leaders told us of the need for safe, adequate, affordable housing for senior citizens of moderate incomes. As Ursulines, we are committed to responding together to meet the most critical needs of God’s people in the Mahoning Valley. So this month, we begin construction in consonance with Universal Design principles on 12 barrier-free apartments in the west wing of our Motherhouse.
Residents also will benefit from having access to the many programs offered at The Ursuline Center and Motherhouse.

Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown Women in Ministry Spring/Summer 2012 Newsletter
The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown are grateful for opportunities to collaborate with other vowed religious, such as the Antonine Sisters of North Jackson, pictured above with several Ursuline Sisters. We also recently hosted two Russian Orthodox nuns from Belarus, at right, who toured our diocese at the invitation of Bishop Murry.
