Our JourneyDalekoArts is aProud member ofThe Network ofEnsemble Theaters, a nationalcoalition of ensemble theatrecompanies and artists.
Our Mission
DalekoArts (pronounced DELL-uh-koh) works with professional artiststo create ensemble-based liveperformances centered in and
around New Prague, Minnesota. Weare committed to being a positive force for high-quality theatricalperformance and arts education. We train and work under a great andspirited legacy; the rich artisticheritage of the Midwest.
Our VisionDalekoArts will be a knowndestination for qualityperforming arts and education inNew Prague and the surroundingsouthern metropolitancommunities.
Our Story
DalekoArts was founded in 2012 by theatre artists Ben Thietje andAmanda White as a way to help decentralize professional theatre inMinnesota. New Prague was chosen as the company’s home due to thecommunity’s extraordinary interest in theatre, the regional growth anddevelopment it has experience in the last decade, its relative proximity to
the Twin Cities, and its close ties to the founders. “Daleko” – a Czechword meaning “far away” – reflects New Prague’s strong bohemian roots, its spatial relationship to the cultural hub that is the Twin Cities, and theensemble’s desire to step back and examine the world from a new pointof view.

Director’s Note
This show is silly, and fun, andweird--and I love it. It is a satire
on corporate greed and socialidealism, and it also parodies alot of musicals. I chose to setthis show in California 15 years
from now; California alreadyhas a drought, so I wasn't
thinking too outside of the box. This future is ridiculous andcould never happen….but is itway off, or are there somesimilarities? Anyway, have fun.If you want to think about all
the heavy stuff, you can, or youcan just sit back and enjoy theshow! Thank you to Ben andAmanda for allowing me to bea part of this!
-Josh
“In a Gotham-like city,
a terrible water
shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has
led to a government-
enforced ban on
private toilets. The
citizens must use publicamenities, regulated
by a single malevolent
company that profits
by charging admission
for one of humanity's
most basic needs. Amidthe people, a hero
decides he's had
enough, and plans a
revolution to lead
them all to freedom!”

A NOTE: HAIL, MALTHUS!
At the end of the show, you’ll hear Officer Lockstock shout, "Hail, Malthus!" If youaren't familiar with the reference, here's something for your use at cocktailparties: Thomas Robert Malthus was an English scholar and cleric who lived in
the mid 1700-1800s. He believed that humankind was hurtling toward dangerousoverpopulation, and that overcrowding would keep us from utopian society. Heasserted that disease, famine and elemental catastrophe was the natural orderand would enforce population control. Malthus might have been an earlierproponent of "Going Green"; he also believed that maintaining a simple lifestyleand limiting one's wastefulness was part of being a virtuous human. This show’swriters appear to be most interested in humor, but you can hear Malthusiansentiment throughout Urinetown. Listen for this moment:
Little Sally: “I don’t think too many people are going to come see this musical,Officer Lockstock.”
Lockstock: “Why do you say that, Little Sally? Don’t you think people want to betold that their way of life is unsustainable?”
Little Sally: “That, and the title’s awful.”
… Hail Malthus! – Amanda and Ben
