The challenge of our work

Bridging the gap between cities, integrated planning and smart technologies and tools:

By assisting cities to transition from traditional, static, normative and inflexible planning to integrated planning: area-based, facilitating and innovating governance schemes, designing integrated solutions for urban and territorial development.

By developing the right tools, flagship projects and piloting actions for actual, real urban problems;

Through research and innovation in the field(s) of smart cities (SC) pertaining to urban development and societal innovation.

How can SC innovation actions witness real impact at local level?

How do we embed technology and articulate cities and providers

via innovative planning?

Some of our lessons learned

Technical innovation at European level

Advanced smart solutions for urban development, an answer to almost every (considered) need;

Controlled testing and subsequent barriers for market uptake and replication;

Developing cities as smart cities – in South East Europe

General lack of experience for opting strategically - „anything financeable goes”

Lack of integration and a governance framework

Local smart development strategies still generally non-existant (SEAP and SUMP just start gathering momentum)

Administrative optics still rigid: silo thinking, the biggest barrier for Smart Cities.

Page 20: URBSOFIA - Bridging Smart Cities and Integrated Planning

Some of our lessons learned

Bridging top-down with bottom up set a base for future coherent territorial development in cities and regions and the foundation for embedding Smart Cities tools and technologies.

There is a real need for smart local participatory planning tools, especially in South East Europe;

Good results require good expertise: local administrations need more direct support both during and after Urban Development projects. A great methodology is not sufficient.

EU Level: 330 million EUR earmarked for urban innovative actions for sustainable urban development in 2014-2020, and even more for Innovation Actions with direct impact in cities. Our strategies have so far played the role of integrators for these initiatives.

Page 21: URBSOFIA - Bridging Smart Cities and Integrated Planning

We are currently offering our services for:

EU proposal writing and project management

Town and regional strategic planning,

SEAP and SUMP development,

Smart city strategies,

Training and organization of study visits,

Dissemination and networking,

Social innovation and ESF projects.
