Deadwood Firewise Program

Did you know that most homes destroyed in wildfires occur from the tiny windblown embers

known as fire brands? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fire brands

are defined as the airborne burning pieces of wood and/or vegetation that can be carried more

than a mile in the wind. When these embers fall to the ground or become lodged in combustible

materials, they can cause spot fires and ignite homes far in front of wildfires. Potential ignition

sites on a home include wood roof shingles, firewood piles beside the home and unkempt gutters,

roof valleys and underside of decks.

The NFPA website is one of several excellent online resources homeowners can learn

how to better prepare their properties for a wildfire. For more information, please

February 20: Preservation Thursday – In Line with Mighty Forces: Ida Crouch-Hazlett’s Black Hills Woman Suffrage Campaign – From April to August of 1898, Ida Crouch-Hazlett, a professional woman suffrage organizer with the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), toured the mining towns of the Black Hills. She traveled by herself through these communities, attempting to revive local suffrage organizations, develop leadership, and raise funds for the statewide campaign. Throughout her travels, she corresponded regularly with the leadership of the state Equal Suffrage Association, updating them on her successes and perceived failures. These letters not only document the ups and downs of life on the campaign trail, they also provide unique insight into the 1898 campaign, the struggles that existed between the state and national suffrage organizations, and the difficulties of campaigning in a rural state. The lecture will be presented by Black Hills State University Professor Kelly Kirk. Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center; 12:00 p.m.; admission by donation.

Deer Feeding Reminder

The City finds that the baiting of deer by placing unnatural food sources

upon any real property within the city for the purpose of attracting deer

to eat such unnatural food source has the effect of enticing deer from

their natural habitat into an unnatural urban environment, thereby

endangering the deer, resulting in an unnatural growth of the deer

population, resulting in an unnatural loss of the deer’s instinctive

avoidance of humans, resulting in reliance by deer upon such

unnatural food source, and also endangering persons and

domestic animals, and resulting in damage to property.

(Reference Deer Baiting Ordinance 6.12)
