Alfred Taubman Wing) (E-mail [email protected] for appointment) URBANISM IN FILM Overview This course uses narrative film as the basis for analyzing and visualizing cities and architecture. Each week, a film is screened from an international filmography that includes contemporary and historic works by directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, F.W. Murnau, Charles Dassin, Fritz Lang, Gillo Pontecorvo, Wim Wenders and Wayne Wang. Following their screenings, the films are discussed based on analytical exercises given at the start of class meetings. As references for midterm and final assignments, they are interpreted for use in the making of five-minute videos of students’ architectural, planning or urban design projects, or of buildings or cities that students select through discussion with the instructor. Course readings consist of film reviews and reference materials in the form of a digital course book.
