1Urantia Association International Annual Report 2014 Who We Are
The Association was inaugurated in 1993 by Urantia Foundation, the publisher of The Urantia Book, to work in a complementary capacity for the fulfillment of its mission to introduce the Urantia Revelation to the world The Association became an independent, self-governing, not-for profit, membership service organization in 2005
We are comprised of a community of individuals who study The Urantia Book and are inspired by its revelatory teachings We encourage and foster cooperation with others in the work of the spiritual, social, and moral regeneration of this world
Urantia Association International is a worldwide organization of National and Local Associations currently spanning 23 countries The Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the National Associations form the Representative Council (RC) which is the governing body of our organization The International Service Board (ISB), consisting of members elected by the RC,
executes the projects approved by the RC
The Association provides interactive learning environments in which students of The Urantia Book may deepen and broaden their knowledge of The Urantia Book and find ways of sharing the teachings with their fellow men and women in their everyday lives This is achieved through activities such as the fostering of Urantia Book study groups, publications, social activities, and conferences We also endeavor to develop teachers and leaders for the dissemination of the book’s teachings
Who We Are
Urantia Association International (the Association) was established to foster the study of The Urantia Book and to disseminate its teachings
2 Urantia Association International Annual Report 2014 Our Mission
Purpose and GoalsOur purpose is “…to disseminate the teachings of The Urantia Book in order to promote, improve, and expand comprehension and appreciation among the peoples of the world of cosmology, of the relationship of the planet on which we live to the universe, of the genesis and destiny of man and his relation to God, and of the true teachings of Jesus.” [Urantia
Association International Charter Article 1 1]
Our goal is to offer support to Urantia Book students as they enhance their understanding of the teachings of The Urantia Book and encourage them to become actively engaged in the social and spiritual regeneration of this world These goals are achieved by providing and fostering interactive learning environments in which participants deepen and broaden their knowledge of The Urantia Book, increase their teaching and leadership skills, and enjoy fellowship with other Urantia Book students around the world
Fostering Study Groups
Individuals who seek a deeper understanding of the teachings of The Urantia Book often find it helpful to study with others The Association provides assistance in forming study groups and considers them the primary social environment for learning about the teachings and educating others
Study groups are completely autonomous; the Association exercises no authority over their activities We support study groups by providing them with study aids, educational services, and assistance and advice in forming, hosting and maintaining them We also maintain a database of readers and provide a reader referral service for those who wish to meet with others to study The Urantia Book
Developing Teachers and Leaders
Spiritually inspired teachers and leaders have changed the course of human progress and civilization The development of
leaders and teachers who are well versed in the teachings of The Urantia Book is a core focus of the Association
Good leaders are essential to the formation of stable and dynamic study groups as well as the formation and governance of National and Local Associations
Study groups have proven to be the best environment to develop teachers and leaders in a natural, evolutionary manner The Association does not presume to designate who is a leader or teacher
Conferences and Seminars
Conferences, seminars, symposiums and other educational meetings are organized by the Association Such events provide opportunities for Urantia Book students to meet and interact with one another By sponsoring gatherings, the Association promotes a deeper understanding of service, teamwork and personal commitment to the ideals of spiritual living
Our Mission
To foster study of The Urantia Book and to disseminate its teachings
3Urantia Association International Annual Report 2014 Our Mission
In addition to meetings and conferences organized by Local and National Associations, every three years the Association sponsors an international conference The venue for this event is alternated among countries that have a National Association so that members and Urantia Book students worldwide have an opportunity to attend and participate in the planning and hosting of an international gathering
Communications and Publications
Newsletters, periodicals, and interactive internet services are important tools for communication among the worldwide membership of the Association These assist in keeping our global community abreast of news and reader activities, as well as fostering educational and study purposes
The Journal is a quarterly publication of informative essays written by students of The Urantia Book, provided in multiple languages Tidings is a bi-monthly, multi-language newsletter designed to keep Urantia Book students and Association members informed of Urantia-related activities and events around the world
The Association website http://urantia-association org/ offers a wide range of news and information The entire text of The Urantia Book, with a powerful search engine, can be accessed from the website; a public discussion Forum is provided to discuss topics arising from their study of The Urantia Book
Reader Services
The Association provides a reader referral service to answer reader inquiries, foster study group development and foster local contact among readers We maintain a database of Urantia Book students who have asked to receive news and information regarding The Urantia Book, the Association and fellow Urantia Book students who desire to meet with others in their region
Study Aids and Resources
Many students of The Urantia Book produce study aids, derivative works and creative tools that help others understand the complexity of The Urantia Book Secondary works can be instrumental in assisting or inspiring others in their study and personal spiritual development; they are also useful as outreach tools for sharing the book’s teachings with the wider community The Association encourages and supports the development of Urantia-related study aids and offers assistance to fellow students of the Revelation in their production and distribution
Global Book Seeding Program
The Association’s Global Seeding Program assists National and Local Associations with the placement of The Urantia Book at relevant learning centers throughout the world which include: libraries, colleges, and universities; as well as schools of philosophy, religion, and science, and other centers of progressive thought
The Urantia Book was published in 1955 and is now available in
sixteen languages, with the goal of making it accessible in all the major languages of the world
Book Fairs & Expos
Book fairs and expos offer a proven and effective method for sharing The Urantia Book with the public They are well attended globally and can be easily organized and managed by a small group of Urantia Book students Book fairs offer unique opportunities for Local Association team-building while offering a means to share the teachings with the public
While Urantia Foundation maintains a professional presence in the commercial book trade, the Association book fair presentations are typically geared for the consumer or librarians In this way the general public can see and hear the name Urantia in a friendly and casual atmosphere, while discovering the book’s teachings and meeting with people who have been inspired by them
Prisoner Inquiry Response Team
The Prisoner Inquiry Response Team (PIRT) has been providing The Urantia Book to those who find themselves in the deepest, darkest of places, our nation’s prisons Since it was formed 10 years ago, over 3,000 letters from inmates have been processed and approximately 1600 Urantia Books have been sent to those requesting a book Our hope is that these revelatory teachings will work to transform these individuals and reap untold benefits once they have served their terms and are returned to civil society

President’s Report
“The progress angels labor incessantly to make things what they ought to be ” [Paper 114:6 6, page 1255 § 5]
At times we become so enthralled in the projects we have before us that we can forget to look back and appreciate the progress we have made If you are reviewing this Annual Report, then it’s likely you are already invested in the teachings of The Urantia Book and the fine programs being led by Urantia Association International To recount our projects and celebrate the progress made during the year would be akin to preaching to the choir, but sometimes I can’t help myself and it is the choir who will listen!
In 2014 we saw:
• 23 countries with active Urantia Associations
• 8 more countries with organized Urantia communities preparing to join our union
• An International Study Group Symposium
• 24 conferences across the globe
• More than 1000 copies of The Urantia Book distributed with Urantia Foundation to 10 countries which lacked
standard routes to purchase the book
• For the first time, copies of The Urantia Book were made available in commercial bookstores in Kiev, Ukraine, thanks to distribution agreements arranged by our National Association there
• Election of new International Service Board members spanning 4 continents, 7 countries and 7 languages
• The new Executive Administrator Margaret Slater Thompson, taking over from Rick Lyon Margaret is settling in very nicely and will be a great asset to the administration team Welcome Margaret
My personal highlight from the year was the weekend spent in the Netherlands welcoming the new Dutch National Association into our ranks As a community filled with veteran and new students, the Dutch Urantia Community has been active for decades and is now ready to help guide our Association in new and exciting directions
There are at least three types of unity in our Urantia community:
• Spiritual unity, which we share not just with other students of this revelation but with every God seeking person in the world;
• Social unity, which we achieve by gathering at conferences and study groups, learning how we each understand and incorporate these teachings into our lives;
• Organizational unity, agreeing to unite our principles and our efforts toward achieving a common goal As more and more Urantia groups join us in organizational unity, our reach and capabilities expand exponentially Each year we achieve more and more!
Urantia Association International is only as strong as our volunteer leaders, so let’s take a moment to remind ourselves that members of our association governing boards, the Representative Council, the International Service Board and Judicial Commission are all volunteers In 2014 Arnie
Chris Wood, President
Dear Friends,

And welcome, Antonio
Taking time to review our progress can be gratifying, but it is now time to get back to work We have much work to do in India, the Philippines, and the Middle East, as well as planning for our tri-annual International Conference in Quebec in July 2015 and three continental
conferences for 2016 Please, join us in our work and help us carry this revelation forward

• For the first time, copies of The Urantia Book were made available in commercial bookstores in Kiev, Ukraine thanks to distribution agreements arranged by our National Association there
• The Association’s website was revised and simplified to provide easier access to information and study aids, as well as to assist students of The Urantia Book locate other readers and study groups A team of volunteers has been trained to manage the site and upgrade content which has resulted in significant costs reductions

The FutureWe live in a time of increasing global communication and education The Urantia Book says:
“Each nation must know the feelings of all nations. Ignorance breeds suspicion, and suspicion is incompatible with the essential attitude of sympathy and love” [Paper 52 6 4; page 597 5]
We intend to bridge the gaps that separate students of The Urantia Book who are spread across the globe and divided by languages and oceans, but united in their search for truth We intend to take full advantage of modern technology to keep building these bridges in an effort to spread the Urantia revelation to all corners of the Earth Urantia Association International has come a long way since its inception and we still
2014 Accomplishments
Ten men are of little more value than one in lifting a great load unless they lift together—all at the same moment And such teamwork—social co-operation—is dependent on leadership ” [Paper 81:6 36, page 911 § 2]
7Urantia Association International Annual Report 2014 Accomplishments
have a long way to go Following are some of our immediate goals for next year and some long term goals over the next three to five years:
In 2015 we plan to:
• Start translating our website into Finnish, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian Translations into additional languages will follow as soon as volunteer translators can be found
• Produce webinars (web-based seminars) in Spanish and English
• Begin the creation of a series of short introductory videos aimed at reaching out to new readers and spiritual seekers
• Increase our presence on social media to reach the broader community
• Expand the reach of the Association with the proposed addition of new local associations, as well as converting the status of existing local associations in the Netherlands, Mexico, and Malawi to National Associations
• Encourage further in-depth study and socialization of the teachings of The Urantia Book by continuing to increase the number of conferences at the local, regional, national, continental and international levels
• Categorize and create a topical index for the hundreds of articles and study aids published in the Journal and Tidings newsletters over the past decades
• Create a dedicated Reader Services team to provide improved and effective support mechanisms for answering reader inquiries and ensuring that an efficient reader referral network operates at all times
• Increase the Association’s donor base with the addition of a “Sustaining Donors” program for those who pledge a gift of $30 or more per month
Beyond 2015
• Establish an exchange program that will enhance the ability of students and Association leaders who do not have the means to travel internationally to meet
with other students, leaders and teachers We know much depends on cultural cross-fertilization, building strong relationships and sharing of ideas and experiences A two-pronged approach is planned: one is to assist students (who meet the necessary criteria) to attend conferences, and the other is to make it possible for Association leaders to visit reader groups in their own and other countries
• Encourage a worldwide focus on conference themes that assist in preparing students to talk about the teachings of The Urantia Book without mentioning the book itself
• Develop Continental Communication volunteers to facilitate coordination between associations and to enhance cooperative projects, social interaction and cultural exchange
• Attract new “Sustaining Members” and other donor support to provide ample funding for all of our programs

Chief Financial Officer’s Annual Report 2014
“The progress angels labor incessantly to make things what they ought to be ” [Paper 114:6 6, page 1255 § 5]
Bradly Tharp, CFO
Greetings to all members and friends of Urantia Association International with this, my first annual report It is my pleasure to announce great progress in our financial standing and ability to meet mission goals and project needs and objectives My primary duty during this time of initiation and orientation was to maintain the achievements of my predecessors in building the organizational infrastructure which delivers operational capacity for the International Association’s dissemination mandate For the first time in its history, the Association entered the fiscal year (2014) with enough cash to meet the entire annual budget Fundraising in 2014 maintained and increased this cash balance, so that 2015 began with a surplus in the bank The new website faced major start-up expenses for its revision and relaunch in July 2014 creating a deficit of nearly $7,000 00 (USD) However, several major gifts were received specifically for these costs, which exceeded the actual expenses incurred The successful redesign of the website has reduced operational expenses for 2015 by nearly half The newly designed site is now fully operational, and volunteer committee members are working on new features and translating the content into multiple languages
Another cost cutting initiative begun in 2014 was the adaptation of our new website capabilities and MailChimp email database to deliver online versions of future issues of the Tidings and Journal newsletters, the Annual Report as well as various miscellaneous announcements, saving over $10,000 00 every year in paper, printing, and postage expenses The long running construction project for the central database also made great progress because of the resolutions and budgets passed in 2014 These provided for the purchase of software, a new computer, and dedicated staff-time to finalize this critical infrastructure need Two new databases are being created: the Master Database contains detailed member and supporter records; the Communications Database holds only names, email addresses, preferred language, and Local/National Association affiliation for general email contact Both databases are expected to hold over 5,000 records each by year end 2015 The Finance Committee (members: Bart Gibbons, former Association CFO and a CPA; Joel Wood, Assistant to the CFO and bookkeeper; Margaret Slater-Thompson, Association Executive Administrator; and me, Chair) are reorganizing our accounting, reporting, and banking
systems to enhance transparency, accountability, and future planning needs A brokerage account has been opened to hold restricted fund balances, surplus funds and to receive gifts in-kind from donors in the form of securities which can then be sold and converted to cash for budgeted needs For those unfamiliar with Board policy, I wish to make it clear that International Service Board, Representative Council, and our committee members are all volunteers who receive no salary or compensation of any form, and are required to pay all or most of their own expenses for their volunteer efforts This includes (with very few exceptions) travel to and from annual Board meetings and conferences The President’s travel to Europe, South America and within the US was paid for by the generosity of individuals and did not come from Association budgets or fund raising The Association has always been a diligent steward of all funds so generously donated to our service mission; it is a sacred obligation to those who support Urantia Association A new Volunteer Service Report form will be implemented in 2015 to measure the time and the out-of-pocket “value” received by the Association from our volunteers without whom the Association

would not be able to do its good work These hours and dollars are critical “donations” which reduce and offset both salaries and expenses that would otherwise be required I estimate the value will exceed $50,000 00 annually if those volunteer hours are given a measured worth of $15/hour This amount will not be reported on annual financial statements as “income” but will provide important data regarding money “saved” due to the efforts of our many volunteers Annual budgets are funded strictly
from general account balances and donations to the General Fund The Association also has several restricted funds to allow donors to specify what service projects they want their personal donation to support Monies received for any restricted fund are accounted for separately and used only for that mission or service project, and are not used if budgeted money is available For more information, please visit the Association website at: http://urantia-association org/general-restricted-giving/
The target ratio for well-run and financed nonprofits is 25% administrative/operational expense and 75% service project costs The Association can meet this important target ratio within the next few years through good planning and with the help of our generous supporters
Finally, I would advise members and donors that it is critical to the future of Urantia Association International and its mission that sufficient monies be budgeted

for adequate organizational and operational infrastructure to support growing dissemination efforts While our current administration and operations budgets remain a significant percentage of the total budget, they are stabilizing and being reduced due to technology enhancements The percentage of budget dedicated to and available for service projects is increasing significantly, as well as more volunteers pitching in to help
Currently, the Association employs a half-time Executive Administrator, a 40-hours per month Database Manager contract position, and two contract support positions of 10–20 hours per month
The Association is on solid financial ground at this time But money remains crucial to our ability to continue to grow those seeds already planted and sprouting around the world today This is an exciting time for all those who continue to work to disseminate
the Revelation I look forward with optimism and hope that our noble intentions and sincere efforts will find good soil and bring forth much good fruit in the decades, even centuries, to come
