No adjustments may be made to the original component parts of the restraint system (belts, seats and theirmountings). For special applications (e.g. fitting child seats) contact your RENAULT Dealer.
Do not use devices which give any slack in the belts (e.g. clothes pegs, clips, etc.): a seat belt which is worn too looselyrisks causing injury in the event of an accident.
Never wear the shoulder strap under the arm or behind the back.
Never use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your lap with your seat beltaround them.
The belt should never be twisted.
Seat belts should be replaced after a serious accident. Likewise, replace your seat belts as soon as they show any signsof wear.
When refitting the rear seats, take care that the seat belts are correctly positioned so that they can be used correctly.
If necessary, readjust the position and tightness of the belt.
Make sure that the tongue is inserted into the appropriate buckle.

These are:buckle pretensioners,
lap strap pretensioners,
chest force limiters,
driver and passenger frontairbags.
These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.
Depending on the force of theimpact the system may activate:- seat belt locking,- the buckle pretensioner (which is
triggered to take up the seat beltplay),- the lap belt pretensioner to keep
the occupant in their seat, the lowvolume front airbag and the forcelimiters,
- the large volume front airbag.
PretensionersWith the ignition switched on, ifthere is a severe frontal impact anddepending on the force of theimpact, the system may engage:- piston 1 which immediately
retracts the seat belt,- piston 2 on the front seats.
The pretensioners hold the seat beltagainst the body, holding the
occupant more securely against theseat, thus increasing the seat belt'sefficiency.
After an accident, havethe entire restraintsystem checked
No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bereused on any other vehicle, even if identical.
To avoid premature triggering ofthe system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner and airbag
system.
Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.
When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensioner
and airbag gas generators.

Driver and passenger airbagsFitted to the driver and passengerside.
The presence of this equipment isindicated by the word Airbag onthe steering wheel and thedashboard (airbag zone A) and alabel on the lower part of thewindscreen or on the sun visor.
Each airbag system consists of:- an airbag and gas generator fitted
on the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger,
- an intelligent computer for bothsystems, which includes an
impact sensor and a monitorcontrolling the electrical triggersystem for the gas generator.
- A single warning light onthe instrument panel.
The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Therefore, when the airbag inflates,it will generate noise, heat and
smoke upon detonation, this doesnot mean that a fire is about to start. In a situation where an airbag isrequired, it will inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin.

OperationThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.
In a severe frontal impact, theairbags inflate rapidly, cushioningthe impact of the driver's head andchest against the steering wheel andthe front passenger's head againstthe dashboard. The airbags thendeflate immediately so that the
passengers are not in any wayhindered from leaving the vehicle.
Special feature of the frontairbagThe front airbag has two inflationvolumes and includes an internalventilation system to prevent burnswhich could be caused by escapinggases:- small volumeairbag, this is the
first stage of operation,- large volume airbag, the airbag
seams rip so that a larger volumeof gas is released into the bag (forthe most severe impacts).
Deployment of the airbag ismodified according to the severityof the impact and the position of thedriver's seat on its runners.
Operating faultsWarning light 1 lights up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds.
If it does not light up when theignition is switched on, or comes onwhen the engine is running, there isa fault in the system.
Consult your RENAULT Dealer as
soon as possible. Your protectionwill be reduced until this fault isrectified.

Warnings concerning the drivers airbagDo not modify the steering wheel or the cushion.
Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.
Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the steering wheel cushion. The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel from the RENAULT network).
When driving, do not sit too close to the steering wheel. Sit with your arms slightly bent (see information onAdjusting your driving position in Section 1). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly andbe fully effective.
Warnings concerning the passenger airbag
Do not attach or glue any objects (pins, badges, clock, telephone mounting, etc.) to the dashboard in the proximity of
the airbag housing.Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).
The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there is a risk that serious injuries may besustained. As a general rule, keep all parts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.
The passenger airbags should be reactivated as soon as the child seat is removed, to ensure the protection of the frontpassenger in the event of an impact.
A REAR-FACING CHILD/BABY SEAT MUST NOT BE FITTED TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNLESS THE
ADDITIONAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, I.E. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, ARE DEACTIVATED. (Refer to theinformation on Passenger Airbag Deactivation in Section 1).

risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.
The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. The airbags and seat belts are integral parts ofthe same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn, theoccupants of the vehicle are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minor
superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries arealways possible with airbags.
If the vehicle should overturn or in the event of a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are notalways triggered. These systems may, however, be triggered by shocks to the vehicle underbody, e.g. from pavements, potholes, stones, etc.
No operations or modifications whatsoeverare permitted on any part of the airbag system (electronic unit, wiring, etc.) (such work must be carried out by qualified Renault Network personnel).
To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may cause
injury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the airbag system.
As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.
When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.
When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

governing the use of restraints forchildren and babies.
In Europe children under 10 yearsof age(1) must be seated in anapproved safety device which issuitable for the weight and size of
the child. The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.
Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after January1992 offer a level of safety muchgreater than for restraints with typeapproval before that date.
It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.
Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval was
granted.Refer to the Child safety equipmentbooklet available from the RenaultNetwork to choose the seat suited toyour child and recommended foryour vehicle.
Remember that a collision at31 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling a distance of 10 metres.Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on a
fourth-floor balcony withoutrailings.
Under no circumstancesshould babies or children
be allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another
passenger in the vehicle.
If a frontal impact occurs at 30 mph(50 km/h) a child weighing 30 kgwill be transformed into a missileequivalent to one tonne: you willfind it impossible to hold the child, even if you yourself are wearing abelt.
It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your lap. Neveruse the belt for more than oneperson at the same time.
suitable for the installation of childseats.
To find the authorised seats andtypes of child seats that can beinstalled in each of the authorisedseats, refer to the table in the
following pages. Before installing a child seat in thefront seat (if installation ispermitted)If fitted to the passenger seat, carryout the following adjustments:- move the passenger seat as far
back as possible,- set the seatback to its fully upright
position,- raise the seat squab as far as
possible,- raise the headrest to its highest
setting,- move the seat belt height control
to the low position.
