affecting tourism
• There are 4 groups of people that affects tourism– Government–Media– International Oragnisation– Travel Writers
Government
• The government has the power to influence the number of tourist that can come to the country and the time the tourist can stay in the country
• The government also plans, funds and builds tourism-related facilities such as hotels and airports.
• The government also plays a crucial role to maintain the security of that country
Example
• The Singapore Tourism Board is a government agency responsible for promoting tourism in Singapore.
• The Singapore Tourism Board develop tourism as an industry which facilitates tourism-related business to invest in Singapore
• Tourism0related business includes people working in hotels, resorts, cruises, airlines etc.
• The Singapore Tourism Board also plans for the development of tourist attractions, such as the River Safari and the Integrated Resorts which expands the tourism industry
• Singapore Tourism Board also aims to make Singapore a tourist attraction in the region
Media
• The media are channels where news and information are communicated to the public, such as radio, newspaper, internet etc.
• The media often report the condition of a country. The report can affect the decision of the tourist to visit the country
• Positive reports can encourage tourist to visit that country; negative reports can discourage tourist to come to that country
• Due to positive media reports, tourism is becoming popular in Antarctica, Himalayas Mountains etc.
Example
• The media report ‘TripAdvisor voters say Italian beach is world best.’ had encouraged tourist to visit Italy because of its beach
• The media report ‘Norway shooting leaves 77 dead’ has discouraged tourist to visit Norway due to the shootings
International Oragnisations
• International organisations are groups of people from different country that work together for a common purpose
• Reports made by the international organisations about the conditions of the country can encourage or discourage tourist from visiting the country
Example
• World Health Organisation is an international organisation that report about the health advisories.
• From 2003 to 2013, World Health Organisation provided information about the situation of H5N1. The information had discouraged tourist from visiting the H5N1 infected countries
Travel Writers
• Travel writers are people who visits and write review about the places they visited
• Travel Writers may write on guidebooks, travelogues, magazines, internet etc.
• Travel writers may write about some information about the destination, such as the type of accommodation, transport, food etc. They may also write about the places recommended to visit
• The reviews written by Travel Writers can influence the readers to visit other places they originally don’t intend to go.
Example
• ‘Fiji Travel Guide’ is an article written by a travel writer, The article encouraged many tourist to visit Fiji
