Upper School Curriculum newsletter . This term in Year 4 we have enjoyed our topic of ‘Land, Sea and Sky’ which involved a fun visit to Whipsnade Zoo as the entry point. This topic covered habitats, adaptation, photosynthesis, life processes, classification, food chains and food webs. In Literacy we have used our IPC topic as a stimulus and have been investigating different ways of beginning a story, descriptive writing, reports, diary entries, continuing stories and creating glossaries. In our Grammar lessons we have been studying direct and indirect speech, apostrophes, prepositions, adverbial clauses, pronouns as well as re-enforcing accurate use of capital letters and full stops. In Numeracy we have been learning about data handling, negative numbers, roman numerals, fractions and decimals, angles and time. Year 3… Year 4… Year 4… French This term in IPC we started with ‘Gateways to the World’ where we looked at how airports worked and the places you can travel to from there. We looked at different destinations you could travel to and compared them to more holiday venues in Great Britain. We researched and produced presentations using PowerPoint. Our next IPC topic was ‘Digital Gamers’. We researched different video games and using ‘Scratch’ created some of our own, looking at coding and how debug. In Literacy this term we have journeyed through middle earth with ‘The Hobbit’. We have looked at descriptions and the language used. We have used drama techniques to explore the feelings of characters. In Numeracy we have reviewed the work covered throughout the year including data handling, fractions, inverse applications, word problems and money. In Year 3 we have been learning how to use a variety of verbs of movement as we tell the story of Les Quatres Amis and their quest to reach la belle pomme rouge (the beautiful red apple). Happily cooperation wins the day! In Year 4 activity and direction was our theme as we prepared for Kingswood. We played a variety of games to help us, from a version of Jacques a dit (Simon Says) to Pelmanism against the clock. In Years 5 and 6 have been putting to good use their understanding of numbers gained last term in order to tell the time. They have used time phrases for times on the hour, half past the hour and a quarter past and a quarter to the hour in the context of their school timetable. What a year the children have had, and this term has been no exception! We have had Sports Day, French Day, Kingswood and end of term trips to name just a few! The staff have also had a visit from Mr Ali to talk about our Prevent duty and requirements. All our policies have now been updated and imbedded in our curriculum going forward especially in SMSC .

This term in IPC we started with ‘Gateways to the World’ where we looked at how airports worked and the places you can travel to from there.

Year 5…

Year 6…

P.E…

Year 6 have really got into their IPC topic ‘Being Human’. A few children have had the ‘claim to fame’ of lying on the floor and being drawn around by a classmate. We have also had fun (including the teachers) trying to place vital organs on the cut out – pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey style. In Literacy we have been totally gripped by our class novel, ‘Wolf Brother’ by Michelle Paver and can’t wait for each instalment. We have enjoyed engaging with the text through drama and annotated illustrations. Furthermore, we have written our own play script for one of the earlier scenes. We had a well-deserved giggle writing our rom coms for French Day! In Numeracy we have been very practical learning how to use a pair of compasses; transform shapes using translation, reflection and rotation plus the odd game of ‘battleships’ to revise coordinates in the four quadrants

Year 5 have been enjoying our IPC topic of ‘Making New Materials.’ We have been learning all about about the chemistry of cooking and what happens when we dissolve or melt things through our topic. We then looked into how to separate mixtures by sieving, filtering and evaporating. This term we enjoyed a science workshop given by the ‘Science Boffins’. The session was very interactive and really brought some important science principles to life for the children. In Literacy we have been reading ‘The Iron man’ we really enjoyed reading this novel and have participated in many activities, which then prepared us for writing ‘Hogarth’s Biography.’ In Numeracy we have been learning to use sorting diagrams thinking about probability, written methods for calculations and developing our ability to solve word problems.

The focus for PE this term has been Rounders, Cricket and Athletics. Children in Years 3 and 4 have been working really hard to practice their batting, bowling, throwing and catching skills.  They have quickly picked up all the basic rules and concepts of Rounders and Cricket and some strong striking and fielding skills have been displayed. Years 5 and 6 have progressed well , learning a few slightly more intricate rules. All children have really risen to the heats for Sports Days. Some brilliant competitive attitudes have been shown, along with a great sense of comradery. Sports Days went very well and the children were amazing.  Well done to all of them for putting in 100%.

Music…

Drama…

Dance…

Year 3 have begun looking at lines of Shakespearian dialogue in performance this half term. We have been looking at the Tempest, A Midsummers Nights Dream and Macbeth; understanding the words and then performing to our peers. Year 4 and 5 are busily rehearsing for The Lion King; they have been creating characters, staging scenes and using scripts in performance. The children are very excited to be a part of what is set to be a brilliant production.  As well as this those children who are a part of our backstage team have had lighting and sound workshops and started learning about stage make-up. Year 6 have devised, written scripts and created their own play to raise money for Sebastian's Action Trust (a charity that helps seriously ill children and their families). The children have worked really hard to create one last performance.

Year 3 have been enjoying 'My grandfather's clock' and 'The British Grenadiers' for Open Day, when they also played LHPA all-time favourite 'Chicken song' on recorder and sang it in both French and English. Following demonstrations a number of Year 3s have passed assessments for cornet and cello in Year 4. Year 3 have started rehearsing two cat songs to perform in the Windsor Festival. Year 4 performed 'Kookaburra' and 'One bottle of pop' in addition to 'All things bright and beautiful' on Open Day. Many Year 4s are in the Lion King choir, and several early performances this term have helped consolidate the songs. Approximately 50% of the year-group have been preparing to take part with the Year 5s & 6s in a big end-of-year concert at the School Hall, Eton. Years 5 & 6 have had Music Workshops, assemblies, Lion King Choir, LHPA strings, Flute Concert and our very own band!

Year 3 have focused on the importance of warming up and have played around with rhythm and beats and created movements to fit to a nursery rhyme to help with their musicality within dance. Year 4 & 5 have been working towards their next school production of The Lion King. They have started to learn choreography, songs, acting scenes, designing make up templates and learning how to use the lighting and sound systems. Year 6 have been working on their own production to raise money and awareness for the charity, Sebastian’s Action Trust. They have worked as a company, having their own area of responsibility to help create a performance. The dancers have researched music to tie in with the script, as well as creating and staging their choreography ready for the performance.
