Three floors of birds, eggs, wagons, rocks, fossils, bears and buffalo wait for you at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. The museum, founded in 1952 and now the largest in inland Southern California, offers exhibits and programs giving you a whole new way to look at the past—and the future—of inland southern California and our southwest.

How did Native Americans live in our mountains, valleys, and deserts? Baskets, pottery, tools, and clothing make these lifestyles come alive. Ever think it would be exciting to have been a pioneer crossing the prairie in a covered wagon? Take a look at the museum’s Conestoga and you might change your mind. How about that bright yellow bird you saw in your backyard yesterday? Cruise the museum’s top floor and you’ll find hundreds of birds to compare it to. You may use borax in your washing machine—now see what it looks like when it’s still a rock!

Explore outside the museum, too. Discover our citrus heritage. See a Southern Pacific steam locomotive and a Santa Fe caboose. Mining equipment from the Mojave Desert, lumber wagons from the San Bernardino Mountains, a water wheel that generated the first electricity in Redlands, and more big surprises are displayed on the museum grounds. Don’t miss the native plant, ethnobotany, and cactus gardens.

The Museum Store features merchandise relating to museum collections and exhibits, including outstanding selections of books, learning toys, teacher resources, and gifts.
