It’s great to see the daffodils and blossoms appearing, although it does make me wonder where the year has gone!

I felt both privileged and humbled to have attended the recent Community Awards. Supported by Wellington International Airport and the Wellington Community Trust. These annual awards celebrate and provide well deserved recognition for the amazing work our tireless volunteers and community do within Upper Hutt.

This year 38 nominations were received, with Titiro Whakamua Early Childhood Education Centre taking out the supreme

award. I have to admit to getting a tear in my eye as I listened to what this Centre means to the young mums and their babies who attend the Heretaunga College Teen Parent Unit – truly inspirational.

A huge congratulations to Titiro Whakamua and all of the nominees! To those of you who didn’t participate in this year’s awards – I look forward to seeing your nominations next time around in 2015!!

Spring already! Reflecting on the year gone by, there’s been a common theme in the breeze which we, as a city, continue to face head on.

RANGATAHI: our youth need our help, all of it. Amongst the ocean of bright sparks who thrive in school, extra-curricular activities and have good relationships with family and friends, there are still some who struggle to feel connected. We all know that feeling isolated from your whanau, school or peer groups can lead to truancy, alcohol and drug abuse and destructive behaviour that can have long lasting effects. Youth Development Upper Hutt (previously the Upper Hutt Youth Support Network) is working to tackle these hard issues. Want to jump on the bus and help? Subscribe to their e-newsletter by emailing [email protected]

Community Development are working hard not only to place our young people into employment through the Employment Development programme, but to ensure they

remain engaged in school right from the early years, through RAAYS. Our Council-led truancy service brings schools together to find non-attendance solutions alongside HVDHB, HV Police, CYF and seven of our amazingly proactive schools – Trentham, St Joseph’s, Mangaroa, Plateau, Oxford Crescent, Fergusson Intermediate and Heretaunga College. We commend them!! Want more info? Contact [email protected]

On a brighter note, September often brings out something special in people. A second wind or perhaps just a glow that they got through winter, funding rounds and AGMs! Whatever the reason for the spring in your step, make sure you take some time out to make others working in the community feel good.

One fantastic way to remove yourself from the grind is to acknowledge those around you that relentlessly strive for excellence in the corner of the world we live in. I am talking about the New Zealander of the Year Awards for 2015. I was humbled to receive a medal and

certificate of achievement at this year’s New Zealander of the Year awards ceremony and want to share this experience with you, to pass the opportunity forward. Although you never find out who nominates you, the surprise and acknowledgment knocks you off your feet and feeds the soul.

We have plenty of dedicated community-minded entrepreneurs who devote their personal time to serving the Upper Hutt community. These are the people that manage to help others every single day, to build a stronger community. We also have incredible organisations and community groups who are committed and passionate about creating a better NZ, a place for our children to thrive. Think about it.

Nominations are now open, for more information visit www.nzawards.org.nz or www.facebook.com/newzealanderoftheyear

As I sign out from Chatter and fall off the Council radar from 31 October to have baby #3, I want to thank you all for your hard work

and dedication to our city and our precious whanau that create the warmth and identity of Upper Hutt. Your work does not go unnoticed.

Don’t forget to utilise the skills and expertise of the Community Development team, they’re a passionate team of women who are marching to the beat of your drum too!

I’ll still be on the Board of Trustees at St Joseph’s Catholic and Fergusson Intermediate Schools and a super active Trustee/Communications Officer for the Trentham Community House, so if you want to get in contact regarding any of those three amazing community spaces, while I’m gone, please email me on [email protected]

Do you have a great idea for a community-led arts project that would tap into a broad, diverse or young audience?

The second round of the Creative Communities Funding Scheme is open for applications as of 1 September. The Creative Communities grants are funds that are administered through the Upper Hutt City Council on behalf of Creative New Zealand.

The fund aims to inspire communities to create great arts projects of all descriptions. It is available for any project that provides opportunities for local communities to engage with, and participate in, arts activities. It is about getting people involved in creating art at the ground level. Any kind of arts project is eligible to apply for funds, just as long as it comes under one of Creative New Zealand’s three main criteria of broad community involvement, diversity or young people.

Also, if you have a great idea but

have never applied for funding before then you are welcome to come along to our funding application workshop on Tuesday 9 September. It will run from 6-7pm at Trentham Community House located at 71 Merton Street.

The workshop is designed to provide you with practical tools to create a winning application. Whether you’re a first time applicant or want to brush up on your submission skills, this will be an insightful and educational hour! So come along with your creative project idea and an application form and we can help you with the rest.

Application forms can be found on the

Upper Hutt City Council website www.

upperhuttcity.com/funding-assistance

along with more information from

Creative New Zealand.

Learn how you can unleash the power of technology in your organisationDavid from the TechSoup New Zealand team will conduct a lunchtime workshop from 12.30 to 1.30pm on Wednesday 8 October at Upper Hutt City Library to show you how. Save the date!

Safety Week is coming up in October, so it is a good opportunity to stop and think about any potential situations that could put you or your family at risk. A few simple changes to your home or lifestyle can dramatically reduce your chance of injury.

The three most common areas where injury will occur are sport and recreation, alcohol and steps and stairs. Here are some helpful hints you may like to consider:

• Sport and Recreation – staying active is important but remember to warm up and cool down; treat injuries early and ensure you participate in a variety of activities.

• Alcohol – the more you drink the more likely you are to hurt yourself; pace yourself with non-alcoholic drinks and make

sure you have something to eat; always have a sober driver and look after yourself and your mates.

• Steps and Stairs – most of these injuries happen at home. So, make sure your stairs are free from clutter; take your time, especially if the steps are wet or slippery and ensure your steps are well lit.

Stay warm and safe, and don’t forget you can collect your free windscreen ice scrapers from reception at the Upper Hutt City Council.

Transact shake hands with Trentham Community HouseTrentham Community House has appointed their first Community Development Worker, as a result of private sponsorship by energy sector business Transact.

Over the last year, the community house has been operating purely on the hard work and dedication of volunteers in the community. Residents in the Trentham area, passionate about keeping their community house open to support local whanau, walked side by side with the charitable trust board of trustees whilst the search for funding was underway for a paid Community Development Worker.

We are pleased to announce that Transact Management Limited, a firm that provides commercial, regulatory and operational services in the energy sector, has committed to funding a Community Development Worker until March 2015, at which time funding will be reviewed. Transact’s Managing Director, David Bott, visited Trentham Community House and identified the importance of the community house immediately. Mr Bott made the

following observation: “Trentham Community House provides a sanctuary for those in the Trentham community seeking support to deal with poor health, financial hardship, educational underachievement, social isolation, violence and crime. Transact is honoured to be associated with an endeavour like this, that is very much needed, and is being carried out in a spirit of kindness and generosity”.

The Trentham Community House Charitable Trust has successfully appointed Mrs Maureen Fox as the Community Development Worker. Maureen, an Upper Hutt resident, has an in-depth background in community work and working with both agencies and community.

The Trust’s Treasurer and Secretary, Mr Chris Carson, acknowledges the hard work of volunteers and the fresh opportunity this appointment brings to the community.

Mr Carson says “the appointment of the Community Development Worker is a major step forward for the Trentham Community House.

The position is the linchpin between the volunteers and the Trentham community and will provide the much needed direction for the activities and programmes of the Trentham Community House, while reaching into the community and working alongside the Trentham

residents and not for profit and government agencies.”

TOP TimberleaTOP Timberlea is about to embark on a critical element of a project which relies heavily on strong community partnership. The main goal of this initiative is to decrease crime in an effort to create safer, healthier dynamics in the neighbourhood. We’ll be looking at how we can work closer with residents to prevent violence, alcohol, drug abuse and vandalism.

An exciting opportunity is coming up as we bring Jude Simpson into the picture. Some of you may have heard of Jude, a family violence prevention advocate who has done some amazing work alongside NZ Police and the It’s not OK! campaign. She’ll be sharing some of her successful

projects working with gangs across the country. As a collaborative group and community that are hungry for positive change and guidance, together we’ll overcome some large barriers and bring out the strengths in people.

Want to promote your upcoming programme or service to the Timberlea community? We produce a monthly community newsletter that is delivered to every household. This is a great way to improve knowledge of and engagement with your service! Just email your contribution to [email protected] by the 20th of the month.

Thank you very much to the 139 community groups who have answered the 2014 Community Services Survey. We really appreciate the time you took to fill out the survey, as you’ve provided valuable information that will inform our work.

It was really interesting to see the great digital shift coming through, with more and more community groups preferring to access information online and communicate via email. 83% of respondents said they would like access the Community Directory via a searchable website, whereas only 17% still prefer to receive a printed version. So the majority of you might be interested to know that Community Services are currently investigating the option of a searchable online directory, but we will also provide a printed version of the 2014-2015 Directory this year.

Two-thirds of the respondents have asked to receive regular email updates from Community Development and over half of the community groups would like to access information through a website, with many wishing to receive an alert when anything new is added. This is something that we are

also investigating.

As mentioned in the last Chatter, we are in the process of updating our Community Directory. Unfortunately the development of an online option has meant the planning of the update has taken a bit longer than anticipated, but we are ready to collect the information now. So if you would like your organisation to be listed, please complete the form online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/uhdirectory. You can also fill out a hardcopy form, which you can pick up from the Library if you haven’t received one via post. Please ensure the form is completed by 19 September to be certain your organisation will be listed in the Directory.

You will be able to meet me and representatives of Council’s Community Development and Community Engagement teams at the monthly Community Network Meetings on the third Wednesday of each month in the Central Library’s Rotary Lounge.

Communications boost for community organisationsThe Community Comms Collective is a group of experienced communications practitioners looking to give back to the community using their professional skills. The collective aims to provide a communications boost to community organisations in the greater Wellington region to help their efforts go further.

It does this by matching community organisations with one of its network of experienced communications professionals, depending on what communications help is needed. The collective also runs regular communications workshops with

the support of Volunteer Wellington and provides useful resources for not-for-profits on its website www.communitycomms.org.nz.

If you are a community group in need of some communications expertise, you can get in touch through the website or by emailing [email protected]. Likewise, if you are a communications professional keen to volunteer or gain more communications experience in new areas, then get in touch. Any time you can give will make a difference.

As part of Council’s Positive Ageing Week, Upper Hutt City Library is hosting an exciting line-up of events including two interactive well-being workshops by Umbrella Health that look at daily habits and skills to help us feel good and cope well, even when things are hard. I attended a similar session provided by the same company and found their practical sessions very helpful in managing stress and coping with the demands of life. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone. There is a morning workshop on Tuesday 23 September (10am - 12pm) and an evening workshop on Wednesday 24 September starting at 6.45pm to cater for those who work.

Spaces are limited so ensure you register for one of these free workshops.

On Thursday 25 September, Lancinne from Disability Information Equipment Centre will be at our Central Library from 10am - 3pm with various products and equipment that can assist you. This is an opportunity to discuss your needs so you can enjoy a greater sense of well-being and independence. More information on Positive Aging Week will be available from the Library late August.

My name is Wendy and I am the Neighbour Support Co-ordinator for Upper Hutt. I started in this role in March and have developed a real passion for this community.

I think that we can learn a lot from what the Cantabrians are currently going and have been though, and I believe that having a close knit community makes everybody stronger and more able to handle what is thrown at them.

I would like to see the way Neighbourhood Support is portrayed in the community change – from an image of watching your neighbour to the idea of supporting your neighbour. This can only be done if we can trust each other and work together.

I currently have 77 groups in Upper Hutt, and since starting I have assisted in setting up seven new ones. There are a few holes throughout Upper Hutt where we could do with some more groups, namely Totara Park and Riverstone Terraces, so if you are in those areas give me a call or come in and see me. I’m based in the Upper Hutt Police Station.

Neighbourhood Support would like to see more of a presence in Upper Hutt and we have a few neat ideas to be rolled out in the next few months including setting up a display in the Upper Hutt Mall and establishing Junior Neighbourhood Support in some of our local Primary Schools!

We are also working closely with WREMO to make sure that we are all prepared in the event of a major emergency.

So watch this space!

Accessibility and ElectionsAll New Zealanders have the right to have their voices heard, and the Electoral Commission has worked closely with the disability sector over the past few years to make it easier for people with disabilities to enrol and vote in general elections. The Access 2020 disability strategy aims to identify and reduce barriers that disabled people may encounter when enrolling and voting at elections. Changes to support the Access 2020 strategy include:

• Information in accessible formats including Braille, large-print, audio format and screenreader files

• Information and consultation opportunities in New Zealand Sign Language

• DVD resource kits and facilitation guides for voters with an intellectual disability

• Plain English resources including posters, booklets and DVDs

The Commission has also consulted on a proposal to extend telephone dictation voting services to voters who are blind or visually impaired or have another disability that means they are unable to vote independently and in secret.

www.elections.org.nzFor more information on the Commission’s resources for people with disabilities you can

go to www.elections.org.nz or give them a call on 0800 36 76 56.
