WANAKA

Local Police have been busy with further incidents of violence and road traffic incidents, yet the mood in town seems to be positive, probably due to the large amount of new snow on our ski fields.

Here is a summary of the incidents over this last week:

On 4th August a cellphone was stolen from the Lake Hawea Store; if taken by mistake please return it to its owner.

On 6th August, a motorist parked outside NZ Post in Ardmore Street, hit the accelerator instead of the brake and crashed into the frontage of the offices of Maxim Ltd.

Later that day a local teacher was unlucky enough to have a large tree fall across the road as he travelled towards Hawea, but was fortunate enough to avoid serious injury.

On 7th August Police attended an argument at a Matai Road address between flatmates over damage to two vehicles at the address, and this was quickly resolved.

Also on 7th August , a local woman turning into the vets in Anderson Road was rear-ended by a distracted following motorist, shunting her car into the adjacent car yard, damaging two other vehicles, as well as causing injury to the turning driver.

That same evening Police attended a serious assault at the Kebab Shop in Ardmore Street. A local male was attacked by two other males inside the shop and received serious facial injuries. Both males have been identified and will be charged in due course.

On the 8th, a male wanted on immigration matters was located in Wanaka and taken to Christchurch for deportation.

On 10th August Police attended a domestic incident in Aubrey Road where the mother was attacked by the daughter. It appears the behaviour of the daughter was totally unacceptable and she will be ‘mentored’ over the next few months.

Take care on the roads and have a safe week.

Council Snippets

Ardmore St improvementsThe next stage of improvements to the streetscape on Upper Ardmore St are underway and should be complete by late October. The work involves six build-outs that will make a safer environment for pedestrians as well as beautifying the area.

Winter Road ReportsQLDC provides an early morning road update seven days a week through the winter. You can get it by following @queenstownlakes on Twitter; “liking” Queenstown Lakes District Council on Facebook, or signing up for our emailed reports – go to our website www.qldc.govt.nz or email [email protected] and put “road report” in the subject line. While you’re at it, now is a good time

on. Keep an ice-scraper and torch in your glove box.

After-Hours Planning ServiceOur after-hours resource planning service is aimed at people who have trouble getting away from their day job to seek advice on new projects. A planner is on duty every Wednesday night from 5-9pm to discuss planning issues, including the resource consent requirements for new business ventures, building extensions and visitor accommodation rules. Phone 441 4099 or email [email protected] to make an appointment for a face to face meeting or a phone consultation.

Wanaka Community PoolPreparatory work is underway at the Wanaka pool so that the building can be strengthened and reopened. Engineers discovered last month that the building fell short of the minimum standards for earthquake safety. Until the strengthening is completed, Wanaka residents can swim at the Cromwell or Frankton pools at a cheaper rate than usual and their concession passes will also be accepted there. The pool is likely to be shut until the end of September.

Collecting Firewood on ReservesMaybe it’s our ingrained “DIY culture” but many people have been eying up

not! Occasionally if Council contractors have felled a tree they may leave wood in an accessible place like a carpark for people to help themselves. But that’s as far as it goes. Apart from being a safety risk, it’s an offence under the Reserves Act for members of the public to use chainsaws on public land. If you see anyone except a Council contractor using a chainsaw on a reserve, please phone 03 443 0024 straight away.

Dogs Being a Nuisance? – Tell QLDCThere are times when man’s best friend drives people barking mad. If you see wandering dogs, dog attacks or there are barking issues in your neighbourhood, please call the Council straight away. We provide a 24/7 reporting service on 443 0024 and if the problem involves a dog attack on people, stock or other dogs, we aim to respond straight away.

Burning Questions

Otago Rural Fire Authority. It’s a simple process but think ahead and apply for the permit before you plan to start burning. Phone 0800 673473 for more information. This applies to permits in rural areas – sorry, but backyard burning in town is a no-no everywhere.

QLDC Meeting in Wanaka this MonthThe Council will hold its monthly meeting in Wanaka on Thursday 28 August, starting at 1pm. Each Council meeting starts with a public forum, where people have the opportunity to speak about anything on the agenda, for up to three minutes each. The meeting will be in the Lake Wanaka Centre. The Council will be holding its October meeting in Luggate.

Poplar to be replacedOne of the Lombardy poplars on the lake front is to be removed, after a

Lombardy poplar will be planted in the same place in spring.

This is as much a tour as it is an affordable, convenient way to travel between Dunedin and Queenstown/ Wanaka without the responsibilities and costs of driving yourself. This bus route takes in such notables as…Lake Waihola… popular for water sports, the wetlands surrounding this shallow lake are home to many species of wading bird Lawrence… Otago’s first gold rush town that once had a population of 11,500. Today it’s a little over 500. Free wi-fi internet. Beaumont… depending on your direction of travel, your first or last bridge crossing over the mighty Clutha River/Mata-Au, New Zealand’s highest volume river. Ettrick… another gold rush town that these days is better known for apple packing sheds along the main street. Roxburgh… this once gold mining town continues to thrive as the service centre for New Zealand’s main apple growing region. Cherries and apricots are also deliciously important crops. Alexandra… this riverside town famous for its wonderful fruit-growing soils and climate is a favourite Central Otago holiday destination. Clyde… the highway gives a bird’s eye view of this quaint and historic township. Alongside the highway is the start/finish of the Otago Central Rail Trail. Clyde Dam… it took over a million cubic metres of concrete to construct this, New Zealand’s third largest dam. Cromwell… fast becoming the business centre of Central. Offers lots of activities including lake watersports, mountain bike riding, trails, etc.
