A Green Business Assessment

campaign has been initiated by the

Upper Township Business Associa-

tion (UTBA), in conjunction with the

Upper Township Green Team.

The campaign consists of a check-

list for business self-assessment of

internal “green” practices.

According to Nick Wieand, UTBA

President, a successful pilot pro-

gram was conducted earlier this

year as part of the Township of Up-

per’s application process for certifi-

cation in Sustainable Jersey. “We

were happy that our UTBA was able

to partner with the Green Team and

support the Township’s application,”

he said.

The Township filed for certification

in June 2014 and, after participating

in the review process, has been

Certified at the Bronze level with

Sustainable Jersey. Mayor Richard

Palumbo and the Upper Twp.

Green Team received the Town-

ship’s Certification plaque during a

Green Business Recognition Program in Upper Twp.

recognition luncheon Nov. 18th as part

of the League of Municipalities Con-

vention in Atlantic City.

According to Paul Dietrich, UT Engi-

neer and member of the Green Team,

this Green Business Assessment pro-

gram is modeled after a similar project

in nearby Galloway Twp., Atlantic

County.

The self-assessment checklist covers areas of recycling, waste-reduction, energy conservation, water conserva-tion, purchasing local and purchasing recycled. The checklist file will be linked on the UTBA website. The file is also available on the Upper Twp. Green Team site at > www.tinyurl.com/mluewkr In addition to providing recognition for

UTBA members that operate their busi-

nesses with “green” best practices,

Wieand also stressed that the program

will heighten awareness of the general

guidelines that lead to a more sustaina-

ble community.

The UTBA encourages members to complete the 75-item questionnaire and submit their self-assessment by Jan. 30, 2015. Completed assessments can be dropped off with the UTBA Secre-tary, Liz Fogio, at Foglio’s Flooring Center, 344 S. Shore Rd., Marmora or emailed via [email protected] The UTBA Sustainable Committee will

review the submitted checklists and

plans to announce recognition of the

eligible businesses in 2015.

A new “Shop Local “campaign has been initiated

by the Upper Township Business Association

(UTBA).

Full-color rack cards have been placed in over 50

businesses in Upper Township as well as the

Ocean View Information Center on the Garden

State Parkway.

According to Blanche Adams, chairperson of the

UTBA Marketing Committee, the Shop Local pro-

gram is the first of a series of activities by the

Business Association to gear up a marketing ef-

fort that will spotlight local businesses.

All of the UTBA marketing material will carry a

special QR Code graphic that can be scanned

with Smart Phones to access the Association’s

website and member directory.

Member businesses are now being featured in a

“Spotlight” section on the website.

The UTBA continues to participate in advertising

campaigns with the local weekly newspapers and

information slides are also featured on the Town-

ship’s Local Access TV channel 97.

Newly designed UTBA banner signs and other

promotional items were featured at the recent

Community Night.
