Crews continue to reassemble the twin tunnel boring machines, Elise and Soyeon, inthe North La Brea Yard to prepare them for their next task: boring tunnels west tothe Wilshire/Fairfax Station.
Fresh from their triumphant arrival at the Wilshire/Western Retrieval Shaft in Juneand then July—ahead of schedule—the machines were disassembled and lifted fromthe new tunnels and trucked back to their home, the future Wilshire/La BreaStation. Bringing tunnel boring machine piece to the surface from Wilshire/Western Retrieval Shaft for transporting toWilshire/La Brea Station.
Technicians must now attach and test the multiple systems that enable the tunnelboring machines to excavate and build tunnels:
Computer and sensorsSoil conveyorElectricalGroutingHydraulicSoil treatment
Soyeon and Elise are anticipated to relaunch in October 2019. They will beexcavating shorter tunnels this time because the distance between the Wilshire/LaBrea and Wilshire/Fairfax stations totals only .8 miles or 4,224 feet, less than halfthe length of the Wilshire/La Brea to Wilshire/Western tunnels.
Once Soyeon launches—she will be pushing off first this time—the machines willchurn underground at their same speed: approximately four inches per minute, farbelow Wilshire Bl under public right-of-way.

Finishing concrete floor inside Wilshire/Fairfax Station.
Meanwhile, station construction continues at Wilshire/Farifax with concrete pours.Excavation will be nearly completed at Wilshire/La Cienega this month, which willsignal the start of building the station below ground. In September, the contractorwill begin receiving material and concrete deliveries into the station box, some ofwhich will require lifting the deck panels along Wilshire Bl. Lane reductions onWilshire Bl between La Cienega Bl and San Vicente Bl will be required to accomplishthese deliveries.

Rendering of the N Cañon Closure.
Work on key construction milestones starts this month for the Wilshire/RodeoStation. Beginning September 2, a 4-way traffic signal will be installed at theintersection of Clifton Way and Crescent Dr to support the N Cañon Closure atWilshire Bl. Work for the N Cañon Closure is anticipated to start on September 9. NCañon Dr will be reconfigured into a cul-de-sac to maintain pedestrian safety duringconstruction.
Later during the month, stakeholders will see the start of pile installation on thenorth side of Wilshire Bl between Beverly Dr and Crescent Dr. The piles will supportthe perimeter of the Wilshire/Rodeo Station box. To support the work Wilshire Bl,will be reduced to two lanes in each direction on Wilshire Bl near the constructionarea. On September 10, the Project will go before the Beverly Hills City Councilmeeting and request a waiver of the Holiday Moratorium. If approved, currentconstruction activities will continue after the Thanksgiving Holiday through NewYear’s Eve. No work would occur on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eveand New Year’s Day.

Current excavation progress for the Tunnel Boring Machine Launch Box in Century City.
The construction of the new temporary bus layover in the median on Santa MonicaBlvd. between Avenue of the Stars and Century Park East is complete. Metro willbegin utilizing the bus layover this month. Metro bus lines 4, 704, 16, and 316 willresume with some route changes. For more information visitmetro.net/service/advisories.
To support the launch of the tunnel boring machines, the contractor is proposing toextend the current closure at Constellation Bl between Century Park East andAvenue of the Stars for an additional 7 months. If approved, the closure will be inplace 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through July 2020. Excavation within theclosure of the launch box is advancing and is approximately at 65 feet deep. Pre-Construction Activities Continue Purple Line Section 3 continues pre-construction activities with advanced utilityrelocation, subsurface investigations, and surveys. Metro contractors are preparingfor construction in the Caltrans yard and on U.S. Department of Veterans AffairsCampus. Click here to learn more about work, closures and detours this month.

Section 1 of the Purple Line ExtensionTransit Project will add three newstations and 3.92 miles of new subway toMetro’s Rail system. The three newstations will be located at Wilshire/LaBrea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/LaCienega. The project will extend thecurrent Purple Line from Koreatownthrough Miracle Mile and is expected tobegin operations in 2023.
Metro staff originally developed a set ofgeographically-based names for thesestations and are now seeking input onfinal names through September 2019.
