Jill and Darren Take on the NY Tri!

New York, NY July 14th, 2013

Competing in a triathlon is an incredible

challenge in itself, and competing in

a triathlon with footdrop is a whole

different ballgame, but competing in a

    triathlon with footdrop in 88 (31 C)

weather at 93% humidity is something

very few would even consider! However, despite their physical challenges and

    the uncomfortable Manhattan heat,

both TeamUP members, Jill Walsh and

Darren Smith pulled out all of the stops

    to complete the Accenture Challenged

    Athletes National Championship

Triathlon in New York City on Sunday

    July 14th.

    The course consisted of a 1500mswim, a 40K bike, and a 10K run.

The first time the Allard USA team officially met Jill Walsh was when she came from Syrato tell the inspiring story of completing her first Ironman race after being diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis. She managed this feat in under 17 hours thanks to determination, tir

support from her friends and family, and of course, her ToeOFF. On July 24th, she honored for her motivating efforts with the Reede Hawk Excellence in SportsmanBelieve to Achieve award. Hosted by the Syracuse Sports Corporation, the Believ

Achieve awards were created to recognize meritorious contribution to the central NYork Sports Community.

n November 2011, four days after running the New York City Marathon, Jamie Button was cutting down a tree limbn his yard when he dropped the chainsaw, severing his peroneal nerve below the knee and resulting in the inability to

ft his foot. Approximately 6 hours after the accident, a plastic surgeon attempted to reconnect the fascicles (nerveluster, which, according to studies, has a 30% chance of recovery), but movement was still impaired After spending 3weeks in a full leg cast, Jamie finally began walking with the ToeOFF. He slowly regained his running capacity with the

help of the Ypsilon ankle foot orthosis (AFO)and within a year he regained enough strength

to conquer his goal of finishing the PhiladelphiaMarathon. In his words As I crossed thefinish line at the base of the art museum steps(made famous by the 1976 movie, Rocky), theoverhead clock showed 3:11:53, a time 3minutes faster than my pre-injury time in New

York a year ago. At a pace of 7:19 per mile, finished in 7th place out of the 272 men in myage group. Jamie no longer requires the aide

of an AFO as 2 1/2 years after his accident, hisperroneal nerve has finally regenerated.
