Every day, we hear news stories of people making a difference.

Back in our own club, the spirit of giving was no less, as 800 golfers teed off on 18 & 19 May at Changi and Kranji locations for charity. Unfortunately, no one managed to ace the Mercedes but I saw that all participants had an enjoyable outing!

The event raised $358,000 for six beneficiaries aiding elderly Singaporeans and disabled national servicemen through the delivery of quality services and schemes. Read about the live auction, as members and supporters really took charity giving to their hearts. The framed photograph donated by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence garnered a final bid topping $12,888! See pages 12-15.

At the recent 16th Annual Swimming Carnival, we saw our very own golden boys and girls make spectacular swims, bidding to be the next Jocelyn Yeo and Ang Peng Siong! Splash over to page 4.

In the third quarter of 2013, we have piled up lots of activities for you and your family. Those of you wanting to be a Pastry Chef can register for the

Assorted Chocolate Making Class or Cream Puff Baking Class.

Tennis fans, keep a lookout for our Singles and Doubles Tournaments, which happen to fall in the months of August and September coinciding with the US Open Championship.

For water sports enthusiasts, charter and experience powerboat or keelboat driving with your family and friends for a great day out at sea.

Have a good time and enjoy exploring both indoor and great outdoor activities lined up for you at the club.

Fellow golfers, did you know that you would be penalised for carrying more than a certain number of clubs in a round of golf? Find out the magical number in Golf 101 on page 17.

In the month of August, Singapore will celebrate its 48th Birthday; I wish all Singaporeans Happy National Day and Happy Holiday to all!

Till next issue, stay healthy, happy and watch out for cyclists.

Flea MarketO ver 100 bargain hunters and vendors thronged The Promenade

for NSRCC’s 2nd flea market on 2 June, Sunday.

Among the mix were collectibles, curios, recycled and vintage items occupying 10 tables during the one-day event.

It proved to be a family bonding time and a learning opportunity for the young entrepreneurs as both parents and children had a great time selling their wares in a relaxed setting.

“I like to bring my kids along to learn ways to attract customers to purchase, as such the sellers should quote reasonable and affordable prices,” shared vendor Judy New.

An addition to the market was the introduction of a “Giveaway Items Corner” that encourages people to contribute their recycled items. Goodie bags, ice cream and ice pops samples were among other giveaways. To all our visitors who dropped by our flea market, thank you for making it a success! We hope you had as much fun as we had fun hosting you!

O ver 800 golf enthusiasts and supporters teed-off on the greens on 18 & 19 May 2013 at SAFRA Resort and Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course, with much of the action centered

at Changi location. The Guest-of-Honour for the evening was MG Ng Chee Meng, Chief of Defence Force/ President of NSRCC.

The main highlight of the evening had to be the live auction which drew excitement and generous bids from the audience in the packed restaurant. Up for bids were a framed photograph featuring the dashing RSAF Black Knights flying over the Marina Bay area, donated by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence and a replica of a RSAF F-16C fighter aircraft quality resin made model in 1:72 scale, signed by MG Ng Chee Meng, Chief of Defence Force/ President of NSRCC.

Bidding started at $500 for the aircraft model and $1000 for the framed photograph. The auction got underway as soon as a number of hands were raised. Despite attracting bids from many big-hearted donors, both the aircraft model and framed photograph were eventually successfully bidded by Dennis Lim for $3,288 and $12,888, respectively.

Club President, MG Ng Chee Meng, presented tokens of appreciation to the major sponsors and a combined cheque to the six beneficiaries.

Support in Motion

T he game of golf is about ball control and controlling it is determined by the

conditions you create at the point of impact. The key to controlling impact is through the correct application of the fundamentals in the setup and swing and that is what this piece is about.

What you set is what you get!

The key movements in the golf swing can be broken down into three key elements or fundamental motions. Firstly, the hands and arms will swing the golf club, the shoulders will turn the torso and hips will follow. Finally your weight will shift or transfer to the right foot as a natural response to the arms swinging and the upper body turning. This simple process is evident in most effective golf swings of the past and present. Take one of these three elements away and the swing becomes complete disarray. Let’s think logically about what’s happening here and why are such moves important to strike the golf ball consistently. Imagine the following scene: Opening the door

Which part of your body moved to reach for the handle first? Your hand? Look closely, your arm? Think again, your shoulder? That’s right, the smaller muscles, the faster moving hands first respond to the task of opening the door. Next, the arm moves followed by the larger body parts. The bigger muscles move to support the hand and arm eventually giving the extra strength to open the door. In golfing terms, the smaller muscles of the hands and arms govern the swinging of the club and the bigger muscles of the shoulders and torso in support. Think back to the moment when you first set eyes on the door you wanted to open. What did you do before you reached for the handle to open it? You first positioned your feet to prepare to open the door. With the balanced position, you were able to turn the handle, pull the door and successfully open it without falling over or wasting any energy in the process.

Your hand and arm started the process (swing), your upper body moved to support (turn) and your feet supported any movement of weight (shift). Each of these simple elements combined in the correct order provides maximum potential for power, balance and consistency.

First, adopt and create the correct position then balance body angles and weight distribution in the address.

In successfully creating this vital sequence of motion, you have successfully set your body up to create maximum power and ultimate consistency in the down swing.

What you set in the address is what you potentially set at the top of the golf swing. When set up correctly, you will begin to experience a natural unwinding of the swing, turn and shift as the golf swing unfolds into and through the ball at impact.

The art of striking the golf ball towards a target is a graceful act of speed, supported in motion. Never lose sight of the hands and arms swinging the golf club as freely as possible as the body turns and the weight shifts to support. The hands and arms create speed while the body turns and the weight shifts to add power in support.

When you reach the top of your back swing and fail to complete your turn or the weight shifts towards the target, make an appointment with me or fellow PGA Professionals to discover what is lacking.

Don’t forget, what you set is what you get, and solving the swing starts by sorting the setup.

Enjoy the game.
