Update on the 2014 TNRM Conference Though it only lasts for a couple of days, the TNRM Annual Conference is an event that represents months of planning and organisation by TNRM staff. August has been a hive of activity at the Darwin office as we are starting to put together the finer details for our Conference and Awards.
Don't forget, we are still calling on groups and individuals involved in NRM to submit abstracts for presentations and posters to feature at the Conference and we're also seeking nominations for our NRM Awards.
If you check out our website, you'll see an entire page has now been built around this event. This will be our one stop information-hub for everything Conference and Awards related; from information about travel assistance, to booking your spot at workshops. Check back regularly for updates as we'll be adding information over the coming weeks.

A special thanks to our conference partnersWithout the generous support of our partners, we would not be able to offer an open, free event of this calibre. We receive both direct funding and in-kind support from a range of Territory enterprises and TNRM would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge their participation in helping to create this event. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Ros Consoli, Events Partnership Officer, on 8942 8308 or by email

Vanderlin Island sits at the easternmost extremity of the Yanyuwa Indigenous Protected Area. The island’s east coast faces towards the open sea and due to prevailing currents is subject to the rapid accumulation of marine debris, particularly abandoned fishing nets – known as ghost nets. Geographical distance and difficulties with access have meant that coastal management activities on the island are limited. In 2014, TNRM funded a marine debris project concentrating on the southeast portion of the island (where most of the debris accumulates). Senior Traditional owners, rangers and li-Anthawirriyarra li-Jawina (junior) rangers have all been involved in hands on clean-up activities over the last few months, with 3 Bardi Bardi (older women) 4 junior and 6 senior rangers undertaking marine debris monitoring and management work on the eastern side of Vanderlin Island. Base camp was set up at Yukuyi [Clarkson’s Point] providing a perfect setting for an operational base and the cross-generational sharing of knowledge. Rangers and Traditional Owners conducted surveys from this base over 3 days with some nets also being disposed of where possible.

These and other surveys provide an important reference point for future management planning, and give an insight into priority areas for debris accumulation and the subsequent adaptation of appropriate disposal techniques. As this site is on the seaward side of the island and land access is difficult, Rangers opted to use a helicopter to survey the more northern points of the east coast of Vanderlin Island. This gave Traditional Owners a rare chance to leave the mainland get a bird’s eye view of the country below. Partnerships were developed with agencies such as DAFF, TNRM and WOC, which is a vital part of ensuring the continuity of these types of projects. Overall, this ‘on country’ work played a small but important role in promoting dialogue between generations of Yanyuwa people, improving our knowledge of high priority areas and developing the means for managing those threats. The work carried out on this project will help to ensure that the health of land, sea and habitat is maintained and the aspirations of the Yanyuwa families in terms of looking after country as outlined in Barni-Wardimantha Awara (the Yanyuwa Sea Country Plan) are fulfilled.

How many feral pigs do you think might be in the Finniss catchment? This was the question that the Finniss Reynolds Catchment Group project was looking to answer earlier this year when they undertook an aerial pig survey. The survey aimed to calculate the feral pig distribution and density in preparation for an aerial cull. The highest densities of pigs were recorded on the open floodplain areas, where densities varied between
0.4 pigs/km2 and 25.6 pigs/km2 depending on which floodplain was being studied. Across the Finniss and
Reynolds river catchment area as a whole (5500 km2) the estimated pig density is about 2.63 pigs/km2, which means that there are between 10,000 and 15,000 pigs out there!
The next step in the feral pig management part of the project is to perform aerial culling in priority areas identified by the survey, bringing populations down by at least 70%. Because pig populations increase rapidly, big reductions are needed all in one go in order to see a difference in pig density, and ongoing pig management is needed in order to maintain densities at low levels.

TNRM market stalls at Batchelor
If you are passing through Batchelor on a market stall day (the second Sundays of each month during the Dry Season), stop by the oval between 8am and 1pm to visit the TNRM market stall. This is a good spot to collect weed management resources such as the Weed ID deck and Weed Management Handbook (free, thanks to the DLRM Weed Management Branch), to ask a resource management question or get familiar with some common weeds in the area, and to learn what is happening in the Finniss Reynolds Catchment Group project. If you have Mimosa pigra that needs managing in the Finniss or Reynolds river catchments, you can collect free herbicide for on-ground treatment.
The next markets are September 14th and October 12th. For inquiries about the Finniss Reynolds
Catchment Group Project, contact the Project Officer Susanne Casanova on 8999 4140 or 0438765979.

and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) headed out to Brunette Downs station in the heart of the Barkly Tablelands. Here, they met with several members of Corella Creek community to begin a drought refuge survey of the region. Despite the Barkly lakes being ephemeral, various aquatic species continue to thrive and very little is known of their habits. The survey highlighted five semi-permanent waterholes across three pastoral properties within which were found six species of fish. A seventh may yet be confirmed as we await DNA results from the museum which will determine whether the two catfish species are in fact three. Interestingly, all surveyed waterholes have anecdotal evidence of them running dry which leaves us with a mystery as to where the fish survive during prolonged droughts. The below picture shows from left to right, Michael Hammer (MANGT), Angus Duguid (DLRM), Dawson Dodd, Patrick Cutter (both Corella Creek) and Michelle Rodrigo (DLRM) at the first site on Brunette Creek, just to the west of the homestead, processing one of the first netted hauls.

Wrap-up from the Kidman Springs Field DayDaniel Chapman, our regional coordinator for the Gulf Savanna, went along to this year's biennial Kidman Springs Field Day to have a chat with the local pastoral and NRM community and to check out some of the latest innovation and information being shared. Held on August 13, this year's field day was a great success, with 73 people attending. A range of stakeholders were present on the day, and a variety of information was available, such as increasing profitability and analysing problems within your beef business through the latest breeding research.
From an NRM standpoint there was a presentation on different burning regimes and how they affected woody thickening. This long-term study (the Shruburn Trial) has been carried out over 21 years on two trial sites at Kidman Springs and results from this research has helped draw together a number of findings and recommendations for pastoralists. The day concluded with a station tour to one of the

The event was very well organised and run, with each of the presenters having a large amount of background knowledge and experience in their given topics. If this year’s event is anything to go by, the 2016 Kidman Spring Field Day will certainly be an event to mark on the calendar!
