SKILLS JOB LIFE Better March 2013 Monthly News Bulletin of DB Tech Society hey never dream about the career in BPO because hardly they have completed their schooling or college. And BPO industry is Tpredominately occupied by only 'English' speaking mass with completely modern in every aspect. When the DB Tech team entered the floor of Competent Synergies Pvt Ltd located in Chandigarh, most of the employees' faces were quite familiar to them; and everyone was waving their hands to greet them. Obviously they belong to the same geographical terrain 'Jammu & Kashmir' of India; and also they are alumni of same institution 'Don Bosco Tech Society', which brings a glimmer hope through the short term skill training program. Now everyone in the floor has a dream for excellent career growth in BPO sector and eagerness to provide the best backend services to some of the world's leading technology, communications and media brands. DB Tech in partnership with MoRD (Govt. of India) launched Himayat to address the needs and aspirations of the youngsters of J&K by proving a placement linked skill training program. Don Bosco Tech has acted as a helping hand for these youngsters, who completed the 3-month training in BPO domain from DB Tech centres located in Ladakh, Poonch, Bishnah, Trikuttanagar, Udhampur, Rajouri and Akhnoor. Now over 120 students are working at some top BPO companies in Chandigarh. Before they hit the floor to take live calls, these students are undergone a 21-day of orientation training program, which is facilitated by the employer to accustom them with real BPO facilities. And after successfully completing the training, these students are ready to take live calls. These students are getting remuneration within a range of Rs 5500 – Rs 6500 and other incentives. Mr. Gurpreet (HR Personnel, Competent Synergies) expresses at ease, “I am extremely contented with the quality manpower we get to receive from Don Bosco Tech. They are up-to-date with ever-changing market trends.” As an alma mater, DB Tech handholds them at the beginning stages of their career till they will have a liking towards the place as well as the job. During the handholding process, DB Tech assists them in every step by appointing a dedicated person to facilitate them in this transition period. “As a caretaker, I am quite familiar with Chandigarh, which really helps me to sort out many issues of these students from J&K. To get an accommodation for these youngsters is just an impossible because the house owners want a localite as a guarantor for them, which I am doing as a facilitator. I try my best to arrange one place for all the students coming from the same centre. So they can face any sort of difficulty and don't feel 'left alone',” says Mr Surinder Pal (Coordinator, Placement and Facilitation). Like this, DB Tech has tried to incorporate some new practices which in turn become a best practice for other organisations to follow. When three months were about to complete we were told about the placement in Chandigarh, I told my parent about this who completely refused to send me to Chandigarh being a girl. On meeting the trainer my parents agreed to send me and these days I am happily working in Chandigarh and enjoying my life to the fullest. Ravinder Kaur (Alumnus, DB Tech, Trikuttanagar) DB Tech has given me so much to count, I have learned a lot here. Besides skill training, the other traits being learned include being punctual, honest, confident due to which I am not only earning good money but also gaining better experience. It is DB Tech that has made it possible for intermediate student to work with graduates, I feel proud of myself. Randeep Singh (Alumnus, DB Tech, Trikuttanagar) When I was told about the placement in Chandigarh, my parents were not willing to send me. My trainers at DB Tech then called up a meeting inviting all the parents. At this meeting, the parents were ensured that their children are in safe hands and also given complete details of the organisation, where students are placed and also about their accommodation. Gagandeep Kaur (Alumnus, DB Tech, Trikuttanagar) I decided to join DB Tech, which offers domain specific skill training to the poor and marginalised youth like me. After getting trained by DB Tech in the BPO domain, I got an opportunity to work with a well known Call Centre 'Competent Synergies' in Chandigarh. Sonam Chuzin (Alumnus, DB Tech, Ladakh) I am not only earning money but also getting better knowledge. Along with the placement, DB Tech has also helped me getting much needed accommodation in Chandigarh. Things are going really smooth now; it seems that the life is going on the right track today. Mahmood Azam (Alumnus, DB Tech, Rajouri) A Big Dream and a flourishing career in BPO A Big Dream and a flourishing career in BPO A Ray of Hope: Reaching the Unreachable The entire team at Don Bosco Self Employment Research Institute (Mirpara) is successfully engaged in the daring project of teaching, training, empowering and rehabilitating the school dropouts with skills to be productive. The Institute offers several training programmes for poor youth in different income generating trades involving practical experience of equipment. The domains in which students are being trained have found real acceptance in the construction industries in India and also in abroad. At the end of the training programme, the trainees had to undertake a typical project work. This year the students of DB SERI undertook two projects; one is for constructing a building for a very poor family and other was the construction of the road in the vicinity of the Kolkata. 75% of the expense for these buildings was sponsored by HELGO, an Germany based NGO. The remaining was contributed by the beneficiary with free labour by the trainees. The project was monitored by Br. Mathew, Br. Roy and Mr. Trivuban Tiwari (GRS Trainer), who constantly supported the entire team to accomplish the project. Don Bosco Veedu skill training centre inaugurated Don Bosco Veedu Skill Training Centre was inaugurated by Shri V. S. Shivakumar (Health and Family Welfare Minister, Kerala) in Thiruvananthapuram on February 22, 2013. This skill training centre is an institute that offers free employment training in Hospitality Management and Marketing with assured placement assistance to the unemployed youth. This training is provided in collaboration with Accenture, one of leading global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing companies in the world. The Centre at Manacaud offers 3-month fulltime courses keeping 30 students in each batch. The students have offered placement in Taj Group of Hotels. These courses are for those students who have passed SSLC from the economically backward sections. “DB Tech has trained and placed over 40,000 employed youth within a short span of two years,” pronounced Fr. Thomas P.D. (Director). The new centre at Manacaud is an extension of Don Bosco Nivas, at Thampanoor where the children on the street are rehabilitated with CHILDLINE and Missing Child programmes in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department. Two Day Refresher Training Programme at DB Tech (Dimapur) The DB Tech team of Dimapur province conducted a two-day refresher programme which was held on February 19-20, 2013. The programme objective was to get recharged, energized and to refuel after working hard for training and placement to achieve the set target. Chittilappilly Varghese (Administrator cum Lecturer, Bosco College of Teacher Education, Dimapur) and Pulimoottil Alex (Miao, Arunachal Pradesh) were the two key resource persons at the programme. The programme was attended by 18 trainers from Nagaland and Assam and 3 state team members. Adult teaching, class room management, vision sharing, documentation-and I and my organization were some of the topics being discussed on the first day. The second day talked about Don Bosco, its values, Don Bosco’s system of education and counseling and guidance. Chittilappilly Varghese alleged, “Great educators are those who learn from others. Every educator is a leader.” Sharing his vision, Bro. Sunny Joseph shared, “The trainers are putting in great share in bridging the gap in rewriting India’s skill mapping. They need to become professional and focused to be more effective.” The participants even discussed the difficulties they face while training the youth and how do they tackle such issues. Some of the issues that can be highlighted include alcoholism, no response in the class and mobile mania. The trainees undertaking BOSCH-NSDC-DB Tech skill development pilot program at DB Tech (Ashalaya) visited the automobile production unit of BOSCH as a part of their exposure visit on March 6, 2013. Sr. Roshni (Center-In charge), Fr. Jeeson (Regional Coordinator), Mr. Vincent and Mr. Bhaskar (Trainer) also accompanied the trainees. Mr. Hanumanthappa guided the student through the history of BOSCH. The trainees were made aware of the different spare parts that are manufactured by BOSCH. Besides, the students were also taken to the production unit where spare parts are actually manufactured and packed. They were shown the real scenario of the automobile industry. Not just that, the group of students even interacted with the department senior managers and learned the real value of hard work to grow in life. Exposure Visit to automobile production unit of BOSCH Coordinators' Meet for Centre Standardization On 16 February 2013, the PRT of Kolkata called up a Technical School coordinators meeting with an objective to standardize and upgrade the training programme in all aspects for all the centres. The meeting started with Fr. Remesh (Executive Director, DBDOC) delivering the opening speech. The major topic of discussion at the session were roles and responsibilities of the coordinators, maintaining proper timeline and guideline, maintaining database, records, activities, maintaining online database i.e. DBDMS, e- portal, updating soft-board, maintaining corporate database, placement database, implementing better strategy to standardize the programme and etc. Fr. Tomy (Technical Head, INC Province) also shared some of his ideas and interacted with the coordinators and PRT team. Being interactive the coordinators shared their experiences and challenges without any restraint and also put forward their views and the challenges they face while working. Concluding the meeting, the coordinators expressed their gratitude towards Mr. Subhechha Ghosh and Ms. Henrietta D'Rozario and stated that such meetings must be organized every quarter since they are really effective. The first day of my internship gave me a proud feeling that I am part of Don Bosco Tech Society. As I observed, the work atmosphere is quite friendly along with the fact the staff is dedicated and competent enough to handle their respective roles and responsibilities. The learning I am receiving here has a great worth, I am pleased to get such an encouraging platform. I really wish to be a part of DB Tech in future. Jerian Kcherian, an intern from Don Bosco Art & Science College (Angadikkava, Kerala) talks about his experience in DB Tech: An Intern Testimony Standing on my own feet today, I am able to support my mother and look after my family. Havingwell Lamare Umeit (Ri-Bhoi Meghalaya) 21 years old Mr Havingwell Lamare is the eighth child from Mr. Klarsing Kharmawphlang and Mrs. Mebon Lamare Along with seven brothers and five sisters, he born and brought up in Umeit, Umroi, Ri – Bhoi District Meghalaya. The parents had to work really hard to look after the big family. At the age of four, Havingwell Lamare was admitted in King of Kings Secondary School (Mawphyrdeb). His parents were proud to have him because this bright and intelligent chap is being praised by everyone particularly his school teachers related to his study, behaviour and attitude. When he was in Class VII, unfortunately his father left the family. Thus, the mother was left helpless to look after her 13 children. Havingwell somehow reached class IX; now he was mature enough to understand the miserable condition of her mother. Thus, he decided to quit education and started working to get daily wages to support the complete family. One day, he came across an advertisement being made by the RRTC, Umran in Mawphor Newspaper. This advertisement was regarding 3-month vocational training programme being launched by DB Tech in partnership with MoRD. The advertisement came as turning point in Havingwell's Life. He didn't allow the chance to be missed, He immediately enrolled himself in the fifth batch of BASE programme at Rural Resource and Training Centre (Umran) in the Security Guard domain. At the training, he stood out to be a sincere, obedient, hardworking and disciplined student. His positive personality was appreciated by everyone including trainers and trainees. As expected, after three months, Umran completed his course quite successfully securing Grade 'A'. He attended the interview being conducted by Colonel Shishupal Security Agency, Shillong. After getting selected at the same, he is today posted as a security guard in Neighreim Hospital and getting remuneration Rs. 5000/- every month along with other allowances.
