EMV security measures. Card skimmers are small electronic devices used to record information in an otherwise legitimate transaction. The skimming device is placed over the swiping mechanism of an ATM and often looks like it is part of the ter-minal. Card not present fraud, such as seen with skimmed cards, is expected to account for $6 billion of the $9 billion dol-lars in total card fraud losses in the U.S. projected for 2018.

ATM Jackpotting

The Ploutus malware first seen in Mexico five years ago, entered the U.S. in 2018 with a wave of coordinated attacks on older ATM models. Jackpotting attacks often takes place in plain sight and can relieve an ATM owner of as much as $200,000 within a few minutes. Phony technicians, for example, can access ATM terminals as if they are performing a routine service, and attach a USB device loaded with malware to the mainboard or download the malicious software directly to the hard drive of the ATM. Later, another member of the group approaches the ATM, trig-gers the malware and calmly collects all the cash within the ATM as it is dispensed. Employees on-site where the ATM is located are often none the wiser to the scheme.

Smash & Grab Attacks

The more traditional form of ATM theft known as smash-and-grab attacks are common in the U.S. Glass store fronts are particularly susceptible to thieves who use trucks and SUVs to smash into retail locations and restaurants, and physically remove the entire terminal. Larger ATMs, such as island kiosks are vulnerable as well as some criminals have been reported to use heavy construction equipment to tear the terminal from its moorings and carry it away.

Explosive Attacks

More common in Europe, Africa and other parts of the world, the U.S. is beginning to see more ATM explosive attacks. In this type of attack criminals place an explosive attack to break open the ATM and remove the money located inside. These attacks

cause a tremendous amount of damage to the ATM and the building the terminal is located in, and in some cases can mean injury or even death to the criminal.

Combating ATM Threats

According to a new whitepaper, Improving ATM Security, famil-iarity with your ATM terminals is one of the best ways to secure cash and sensitive information as knowledgeable technicians have a better chance of spotting tampering. Card skimmers pos-ing as bezels, rouge USB drives and other suspicious equipment are easy to spot for trained technicians who are familiar with certain terminal models and locations.

Placement of ATM terminals can also have an impact on secu-rity. Soliciting a criminal activity report from local law enforce-ment prior to placing ATMs in the field can make terminals safer for potential customers according to ATM Safety and Security Tips published by the LAPD. Locations that are safer for custom-ers are also more secure for the ATM owners. The criminal activ-ity report can also help determine what type of security would best suit each location.

As threats to ATMs evolve so too do security measures. To keep your ATM terminals secure, explore the following security op-tions:

• Physical Barriers. Installing concrete pylons or bollards create a physical barricade around the ATM. Designed to sustain high levels of impact and prevent damage to store fronts and free-standing ATMs, these security measures help prevent smash-and-grab attacks. Bollards can help prevent smash and grab attacks

Other physical deterrents include ATM body armor that sur-rounds the terminal in steel plating and anchor kits. Armor may deter criminals trying to grab the ATM or from setting an explosive device to the terminal. Bolting the ATM to the ground provides an extra layer of security as most anchor kits are de-signed to withstand high impacts.

Keeping ATM Security Threats in Check (Continued from Page 4)

• Physical Security. Many attacks happen where the ATM is most vulnerable, the top cabinet. Upgrading locks and managing key access is a sound method of preventing unauthorized entry to the terminal, where the main board and dispenser connec-tions are housed. For high-risk locations, one-time code locks can be used to ensure only valid technicians are accessing the cabinet. The installation of alarms at ATM access points will no-tify site staff that the terminal has been breached, adding another layer of security.

Investing in security management software with remote diagno-sis or other monitoring solutions allows ATM owners and opera-tors to manage and monitor terminals in real time. Most security software contains features that scan for unusual transaction and/or service activity at each ATM and send alerts when suspicious activity is recorded. Anti-skimming and anti-shimming solu-tions are also available for high-risk locations.

• Update Software. The slow migration to EMV has left some ATMs in the U.S. susceptible to a variety of cyber-attacks. Install-ing software updates and security patches in a timely man-ner is vital to protecting the terminal’s operating system from unauthorized downloads of malware and skimming software. Regularly updating passwords and monitoring employees and technicians who have access to the ATM adds another layer of security.

• Video Cameras. Installing surveillance cameras acts as crime deterrent and helps protect both the ATM deployer and custom-ers. Video cameras can be installed at the site to monitor the ATM and surrounding area or on the terminal itself. Even when thieves wear hats, sunglasses, etc. those items can still act as identifiers for local law enforcement.

The proper combination of prevention strategy and technol-ogy can greatly reduce the risk to ATM terminals.
